California Prospect Batting Practice Highlights

11/3/2018

Donovan Ratfield (2020 C, Sparks, NV) took reps from both sides of the plate and the lean 6-foot catcher showed skills both right and lefthanded. Lefthanded, Ratfield stayed direct to the ball with looseness to his linear stroke while he was able to drive the ball better from the right side with more leverage and lift to his path.

Before jumping on the mound where the uncommitted lefthander topped out at 89 mph, Tyler Montoya (2019 LHP, North Las Vegas, NV) handled the barrel as well, showing two-way potential. There’s lot of quickness to his hands as he whips the barrel through the zone, staying linear through the zone with solid line drive contact off the barrel.

Christian Davis (2019 OF, Ontario, CA) is listed at 6-foot, 196-pounds and he does a nice job of incorporating that strength into his righthanded swing. With a long and loose swing, Davis creates separation out front and is able to impact the baseball to his pull side gap with backspin coming off.

Bryant Gadison (2020 OF, West Covina, CA) took one of the more impressive rounds of the day as the long and projectable 6-foot-2, 155-pound uncommitted outfielder showed a nice handle for the barrel throughout. He did an excellent job of repeating his swing mechanics while creating extension out front showing looseness to his hands with extension out front.

Peyton Schulze (2021 3B, Poway, CA) is strongly built with broad shoulders and he knows how to incorporate that strength into his swing. Utilizing a leg lift trigger for timing, Schulze shows nice offensive  tools to projectable upon moving forward with hard jump off the barrel to the opposite field gap with nice strength in his hands.

Kainoa Williams (2021 SS, San Diego, CA) is one of the younger players in this portion of the showcase as a sophomore but he put his tools on display on both sides of the ball. A righthanded bat, Williams does a nice job of staying short to the ball with separation out front, showing carry off the barrel with a contact oriented approach.

Troy Holland (2020 1B, Rancho Cucamonga, CA) stands out in the lefthanded box at 6-foot-3, 250-pounds and showed some of the  best raw power on the day. He stays short and direct with his swing and was able to drive the ball hard to his pull side, something he’ll continue to unlock more of with a shorten shift through his lower half.

Julius (Jay) Harris (2020 SS, San Diego, CA) has a loose and projectable 5-foot-10, 160-pound build and while he has room to grow, Harris stays loose and linear through the zone. The ball jumped off his barrel back up the middle, and while he can get mistimed moving into contact, there are offensive tools to follow moving forward.

Fred Ramos (2021 MIF, Hayward, CA) employs a pull side approach in the lefthanded batter’s box, utilizes a high leg lift trigger for timing at the plate. He stays short and quick to the ball with his hands and creates some whip with the barrel, showing lift to his path with strength to project upon.

A primary first baseman, Tyler Simmons (2020 1B, Hemet, CA) does a nice job of staying short and direct to the ball and shows plenty of strength off the barrel when squared. He did a nice job of turning on the baseball and showed nice carry to his pull with a short finish through the ball.

Daniel Lee (2020 LHP, Mission Viejo, CA) may be listed as a primary pitcher but he did a nice job of swinging it from the left side as well, showing two-way potential. His mechanics are simple in the box and he shows strength off the barrel, creating carry to his pull side while repeating his swing.

Jonathan Winn (2019 3B, Fresno, CA), an uncommitted third baseman listed at 6-foot, 175-pounds, who showed tools in the box to follow moving forward. With a full path through the zone, Winn shows strength to his hands and looks to create lift at the point of contact nice jump coming off the barrel.

Anthony Ortiz (2020 SS, Montebello, CA) has a long and projectable 6-foot-3, 185-pound frame and while the junior is listed as uncommitted, he shows nice tools on both sides of the ball. He shows looseness to his hands and incorporates his physical strength well, showing jump off the barrel to all parts of the field.

Samuel Bones (2019 RHP, Stockton, CA) is another primary pitcher who showed well during his round of batting practice. Staying short to the ball while keeping his hands inside during his swing, Bones was able to create a good sound off the barrel with hard contact to his pull side while generating extension out front.

Brandon West (2019 OF, Diamond Bar, CA) is strongly built at 6-foot-3, 215-pounds and there’s plenty of strength to tap into in his lefthanded swing moving forward. Staying short to the ball with his stroke, West shows quickness through the zone and was able to impact the baseball when squared up and on time.
