PG All-Americans: Where are they now?

PG All-Americans - Where are they now?

Every year, Perfect Game hosts its All-American Classic, one of the most prestigious honors for high school players across the country. It’s a storied event with 23 years of rich history — between the countless big leaguers who have gone on to produce incredible big-league careers, to future World Series champions, and players from more recent years who still have a whole road ahead of themselves.

This week, our PG Draft Team has decided to take a look back at the history of this event over the years. Our scouts on the draft team went through and selected a PG All-American Classic from the past to discuss across three different eras.

Over its 23-year history, we have divided it into three eras: the 2000s, the 2010s, and the 2020s. Our Scouts take a look at some of the noteworthy performers from the years they chose, and give a little “where are they now?” update for some of these players who have gone on to shine in the big leagues, and those from more recent years who are still paving their way with big-time performances in the minor leagues, as they continue their journey through the game.

2000s Era
For this era, we look at a PG All-American Classic from 2003-2009, with each of our scouts selecting a year to look at the players from that year and where they are now.

2004 Aflac All-American Classic
Just a few years after its inception, Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md., hosted the 2004 Aflac All-American Classic. Team West took home a 4-2 victory over Team East. There was some history from this game as well, with some names that will stand out to any baseball fan. Andrew McCutchen, a 17-year MLB veteran & former MVP, had 4 hits for Team East, setting a PG All-American Classic record. Ike Davis, who appeared in the big leagues for over seven seasons, took home the MVP Honors from the event. Justin Upton, a 4-time MLB All-Star, took home the Jackie Robinson Award in 2004, as well. From this event alone, 15 All-Americans went on to become big leaguers. This includes some household names, like Buster Posey, Austin Jackson, Cameron Maybin, and Jeremy Hellickson.  - Tyler Kotila

2006 Aflac All-American Classic
For the first time in the history of the game, it was played out west at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego. The great fans of San Diego got to witness two star-studded rosters filled with future big leaguers. One of the more notable names is probably left-hander Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner threw in 15 big league seasons and became a postseason legend for his World Series runs with the Giants. The easy squad also featured future Cy Young winner Rick Porcello and MLB All-Star Matt Harvey. The lineup was loaded with future big league starters, led by 16-year MLB vet Jason Hayward. He was joined by DJ LeMahieu, Yasmani Grandal and Derek Dietrich, making for a potent lineup. On the west side, the roster featured multiple future World Series champions. Freddie Freeman was the most noteworthy name, going on to win an NL MVP, become a 9-time All-Star, and win three championships. 2015 World Series champion infielder Christian Colon took home MVP honors for his two-hit performance. The roster also featured right-hander Robert Stock, infielder Josh Vitters, and catcher Cameron Rupp, who also took home the Home Run Derby title that year. While the west squad did not have as many future household big league names, it did manage to take home a 9-8 victory. -Tyler Henninger

2009 Aflac All-American Classic
The ‘09 Aflac All-American Classic is noted for its star-studded group at the top, and it’s hard to beat. The West roster featured two league MVPs in Bryce Harper and Kris Bryant. Harper is still recognized as one of the best draft prospects to ever come out, eventually being selected No. 1 overall by the Washington Nationals in the 2010 Amateur Draft. Bryant followed a few years later after his time at the University of San Diego, earning a second overall selection by the Chicago Cubs in the 2012 Amateur Draft. This matchup also featured Tony Wolters, Jameson Taillon and Kevin Gausman who have each more than earned their time in the big leagues. The Classic returned to San Diego and it ended in its first ever tie. Taillon was the nation’s top prospect at the time and recorded four punchies, with Wolters earning MVP honors. DeAndre Smelter helped lead the East on the bump as the nation’s 14th-ranked prospect at the time, earning a 14th round selection by the Minnesota Twins in 2010. This Classic brought unforgettable moments and players with not one, but two MVPs and three combined between the two of them. -Isaiah Burrows

2010s Era
For this era, we look at a PG All-American Classic from 2010-2019, with each of our scouts selecting a year to look at the players from that year and where they are now.

2011 Perfect Game All-American Classic
2011 was the ninth annual All-American Classic and has to be considered amongst the most talented. The east squad’s infield was littered with future MLB All-Star appearances, as it featured Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, and Addison Russell. The outfield crop had a couple future prominent big leaguers in Jesse Winker, David Dahl, Albert Almora, and future NFL No. 1 overall pick in Jameis Winston. On the mound, right-hander Lance McCullers started the game. The staff also featured Carson Fullmer, and Lucas Sims. On the flipside, the west squad was just as star-studded. Lucas Giolito touched 97 mph. He was joined on the staff by high school teammate Max Fried and future big leaguer Ryan Burr. The arms held the talented east squad to just one hit.  Alex Bregman was the most prominent name in the west lineup. The future No. 2 overall pick was joined by Nick Williams and Joey Gallo. Gallo took home the MVP award after showing his mammoth power on a tower 442-foot home run. In the end, the West won 6-2, pulling the all-time series record to 4-4-1. -TH

2014 Perfect Game All-American Classic
The 2014 PGAAC is renowned for its depth across the board, particularly on the bump with its good mix of Day 1 selections and future big leaguers. Jonathan India, Ryan Mountcastle, Austin Riley, No. 1 ranked player in the country Brendan Rodgers and Kyle Tucker highlighted a formidable East squad. It also featured Slade Cecconi and No. 2 player in the country Daz Cameron. Kolby Allard and Beau Burrows featured a dynamic punch on the bump for the West squad. Trent Grisham and Ke’Bryan Hayes were big time prep talents that are still making names for themselves in the MLB, with Grisham coming off a career year with the Yankees. Josh Naylor clubbed his way to an All-American spot and hasn’t stopped hitting since his MLB debut. Overall, the West took the win in this matchup and all 18 pitchers in the game topped out at 90 mph or better. The depth of the ‘14 Classic shouldn’t be forgotten with a slew of first-rounders on both sides. -IB

2018 Perfect Game All-American Classic
In 2018, the West Team took home its third straight victory over Team East, winning the 2018 Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif. Noteworthy performances came from Corbin Carroll, who went on to win the MLB Rookie of the Year award in 2022 and is a 2-time All-Star over his first four seasons in the big leagues. Bobby Witt Jr. took home the Jackie Robinson Award honors and has become one of the premier talents in the big leagues through his first four seasons with the Kansas City Royals. There are a lot of big-time names across this crop of talent, including other household names like CJ Abrams, Riley Greene, Gunnar Henderson, Jack Leiter, and Anthony Volpe, to name a few. 13 players went on to be selected in the MLB Draft and are carving out careers at the next level. - TK

2020s Era
For this era, we look at a PG All-American Classic from 2020-2025, with each of our scouts selecting a year to look at the players from that year and where they are now.

2021 Perfect Game All-American Classic

It still needs time to develop, but the 2021 PG All-Americans was really special at the time. It featured four of the Top-5 picks of the 2022 Amateur Draft in Jackson Holliday, Andruw Jones, Termarr Johnson and No. 1 player in the country Elijah Green. This Classic was full of Day 1 selections. Roman Anthony was the top-ranked prospect in the game and has the makings of a star with the Red Soxx, and Sal Stewart has the chance to be an impact piece with the Reds and both represented Team East. Cam Collier is also making noise in the Reds’ system and was a PG All-American, as well. Mikey Romero, Ike Irish, Malcom Moore and Justin Crawford were just some of the eventual first rounders that represented Team West. It was even better on the bump with the likes of Dylan Lesko, Nolan Schultz and Brandon Barriera, all three were first-round picks as preps in 2022. Robby Snelling and Juragngelo Cinjete also toed the bump with Ian Ritchie Jr. and Jackson Ferris following. Overall, this was a loaded prep group with bundles of Day 1 talents. Team East no-hit Team West and won 9-1 with Luke Heyman earning MVP honors. -IB

2022 Perfect Game All-American Classic

The 2022 game was an all-timer with the West taking home a 5-2 victory in extra innings. The rosters were loaded with talent that has taken over college baseball and the minor league ranks since they played in the PGAAC. Of the players that have already been drafted, Max Clark and Walker Jenkins have skyrocketed into Top-10 prospects in all of baseball. Kevin McGonigle is quite possibly the best prospect in the sport. Bryce Eldridge has become the premier power hitting prospect in the sport and made his big league debut earlier this year. Noble Meyer and Thomas White were both selected by the Marlins and have become the prominent arms in their system. Blake Mitchell is one of the best catching prospects in all of minor league baseball and Cooper Pratt, George Lomard, and Aiden Miller are each quickly escalating up their respective systems. That’s just the players that went to pro ball out of high school. Of the current guys still in college, Roch Cholowsky is in line to become the first overall pick this July. Drew Burress has been on a tear for two years at Georgia Tech and should be a Top-5 pick. Liam Peterson has a chance to be the first arm off the board. Ryder Helfrick (who took home MVP honors), Gavin Grahovac, and Gave Gaeckle are all players that have had success in college and will draw considerable interest come draft time. There is still time to see how this class plays out, but the success they have already had has been remarkable. -TH

2023 Perfect Game All-American Classic

In 2023, Team West was able to squeak by with a 4-3 win over Team East at Chase Field in Phoenix, Ariz., with plenty of talent from top to bottom. Ty Southisene took home MVP honors with his performance. Derek Curiel was the Jackie Robinson Award winner. Southisene was drafted by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 2024 MLB Draft, and Curiel is patrolling the outfield for LSU and is in position to be a top-half first-rounder in the 2026 MLB Draft. But that’s not all, there’s some other high-level talent across this roster. This includes nine first-rounders in Konnor Griffin (9th overall- Pirates), Bryce Rainer (11th overall- Tigers), PJ Morlando (16th overall - Marlins), Braylon Payne (17th overall- Brewers), Theo Gillen (18th overall - Rays), Cam Caminiti (24th overall - Braves), Dante Nori (27th overall - Phillies), Slade Caldwell (29th overall - Diamondbacks), Levi Sterling (37th overall - Pirates). While a lot of these guys are still working their way through the minors, there’s a lot of talent in this group and a lot of stories still being written. - TK

Top 100 Collegiate Freshmen

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
As we creep toward opening day here in a month or so, the draft team has put together the Top 100 freshmen on campus this spring.  Three high-end arms lead the way, starting with Jack Bauer. The Mississippi State left-hander reached triple digits as a prep and is sure to make an immediate impact this spring. UCLA right-hander Angel Cervantes was selected in the 2nd round of last year’s draft but held firm on his commitment and should be an impact arm for the Bruins. Following the arms, a collection of bats rounds out the Top 10. There is loads of upside to the group with the potential and they should draw considerable playing time as freshman.  As the list gets deeper, there are plenty of players that should pop up and make significant contributions both this year and years down the line. The class has both depth and talent, making for a very intriguing group of...
