13u Select Festival Preview

13u Select Festival Roster Breakdown

With the 2024 13u Perfect Game Select Festival just on the horizon, 38 of the most talented 13u eligible players from across the country will descend upon the University of Virginia as they were chosen as the host sight for the 6th iteration of the event. It proved to be another long, arduous summer with lots of travel coast-to-coast between some of the marquee youth events in the country, whether the Beast of the East in Panama City, Florida, the PGI in Chesterfield, Missouri, the 13u WWBA in West Palm Beach, Florida or the quite literally the biggest of them all, the Houston Super NIT in Houston, Texas (just to name a few) with all roads eventually leading to the 13u National Showcase back in West Palm Beach where all of the 38 rostered players were in attendance.

Started three years after the inaugural 14u Festival back in 2016, the alum of the 13u game have already begun making their marks on the pro ranks of baseball as 8 players (Raffaele Velazquez, Slade Caldwell, Konnor Griffin, Cam Caminiti, Theo Gillen, Chase Mobley, Ty Southisene and Erik Parker) have already heard their names called in the MLB Draft, the first 5 of whom went in the first round. And if you include international signings like top prospect Ethan Salas, Jose Perdomo and Luis Ayden Almeyda amongst others, the collective signing bonus is north of $35,000,000. And while the number of draftees is currently at 8, you can expect that to climb into the double digits following the 2025 MLB Draft and there’s no doubt this year’s crop will eventually add to the tally come 2028 and 2029.

This year’s roster is composed of players from both the 2028 and 2029 graduating classes and truly span from coast-to-coast as 15 different states are represented with your traditional hot beds leading the way in California and Florida (6 players apiece) while both Arizona and Texas rostered 4 players. A deeper dive into the rosters show 21 of the players have experience in at least one Select Festival as a pair return after appearing in the 11u game back in 2022, 13 made the trip to East Cobb last summer for the 12u Select Festival and 6 are returning for their third trip in as many years and look to join an exclusive group in making a clean 4-year sweep next year.

Quick math shows 17 players will be making their Festival debut this upcoming weekend in Charlottesville and they come in all forms of talent, from power arms to impact bats, threats on the bases and some of the highest-end athleticism that’ll be on the field this weekend. And while the class of 2029 rankings haven’t yet been released, it’s safe to say some of the first timers have made an indelible impression and will fight their way to the top come release day.

There will be plenty of players to watch closely as the East possesses some of the bigger arms in the game with the likes of Greyson Bell, Alex Bello, Knox Myers and Trent O'Malley while the West will be able to punch right back with Russell Nelson, Adam Kramer and Noah Vrzal amongst others as all the aforementioned arms have already worked into at least the mid-80s.

Are you looking for juice? Jason Marll Jr, Jaden Freeze, Peyton Lopez, Colton Windham, Macgraw Vanwormer and Dylan Mercado all have double digit home runs this spring/summer and it’s Mercado who’s also leading the way in terms of total hits as he collected 95 on the year; he’s one of 8 players to rack up at least 60 knocks this season. Speed? Vanwormer (55) and Charlie Blalock (40) lead the rosters in bags and you can all but guarantee they’ll be on the move come Sunday should they reach base. Amongst all the offensive video game numbers, we can’t overlook Marll’s .636 average nor Easton O'Quinn’s .581 mark, which he put together amongst a slew of appearances at all the major circuit events.

As a whole, these 38 players have come together to help raise funds for the children at UVA Health and as of this writing are nearly at their $40,000 goal, collecting just north of $38,000, all of which goes to the hospital and the families of the patients within.

If you'd like to help and donate to the cause, you can do so here: https://getinvolved.uvahealth.org/team/595631

Check in day for the players is Thursday, August 22nd and you can experience the ins and outs of the Festival thanks to the social media presence on site who’ll take you behind the scenes throughout the weekend from the room reveals to inside the practices, home run derby, and of course, the game. Be sure to check it out Sunday, August 25th at 11 am EST as it’ll be broadcasted live on PerfectGame.TV as well as on the @PerfectGameUSA handles on both Instagram and X.

‘27 LHP Max Phillips (@TrinityHSBBall) settled in after a busy 1st frame. FB lived 87-89/90 & flashed 91 (3x) during his 4 innings. Sweeper @ 76-79 ~2400 rpm was a constant & flipped for Ks. It’s easy to see why as he has arguably the highest ceiling in the class, both on the mound and as a bat. In my look, a few backs, Phillips got the start on the mound during his team’s last regular season game. The Wake Forest commit in four innings, saw his FB up to 91 a handful of times, while living 87-89 for the majority. The changeup sat in the low 80s while he...

East Memorial Day Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Trigg Listerman (28, Tampa, FL) had a great showing on the mound Sunday, throwing 4 inning while allowing only 2 hits and no earned runs. Listerman is a quick, athletic righty arm with a fastball that ran up to 90 with some run to it and a sharp breaking ball with sharp, late break to it. Kept hitters guessing at the plate all game and struck out 7 batters. Brody Root (28, Saint James City, FL) had a good start on the mound in the first round of the playoffs, throwing 5 innings allowing only 3 runs and sitting 6 batters down on strikes. pounded the zone with the fastball that ran up to 86 and complimented it nicely with a late breaking slider with tight spin to it. ‘27 SS Malachi Butler doesn’t miss a stitch of this one, hitting it out to the PS for a 2-run HR. Profile littered with tools & performs at an elite level. @GTBaseball commit. #SEMemorialDay https://t.co/WOCXkOZmiL pic.twitter.com/lSHadfcfKZ — Perfect Game Georgia (@PG_Georgia) May 22, 2026 Georgia Tech commit Malachi Butler (2027, Powder Springs, Ga.) hasn’t missed a beat since the summer began, putting up gaudy numbers through the first two tournaments. A week ago, he hit .500 while taking home MVP honors, well he almost replicated those numbers over the weekend, hitting .412 across six games with three doubles and a homer. He showed elite strike zone awareness throughout, finishing with six walks to zero strikeouts and the impact has ticked up in a big way. Butler recently took over the top spot in the state and it’s easy to see why. He checks a ton...

USA Prime Claims 17U Title in Thriller

Alyssa Golden
Article Image
USA Prime Tampa Scout 2027 edged VSA Scout 17U 4-3 Monday afternoon, using strong defense and a walk-off RBI from Bryce Flemming to secure the title. A light breeze helped cool down an otherwise warm afternoon at JetBlue Park during the championship game. USA Prime jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning to apply early pressure on VSA. VSA responded behind relief pitcher Finlee Crowder, who settled the game down after entering in the second inning and helped keep his team within reach as the game turned into a back-and-forth battle. VSA eventually battled back to tie the game at 3-3, but several momentum-shifting defensive plays from USA Prime catcher Marcello Fraccola helped preserve the tie throughout the middle innings. “I feel like a huge motivator on the team,” Fraccola said. “The catcher is a big position on the field. You have to make...

Field of 64 Projections

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
The 2026 season was one of the most exciting and unpredictable editions of college baseball in recent memory, and as quickly as it flew by, we are ready to start the “Road to Omaha”.  After hours of deliberation, we are ready to release our projected region field and “Field of 64” as we see it.  The UCLA Bruins (51-6) start us off as the anticipated No. 1 National Seed as they put the finishing touches on a historic season, including a 27-game win streak, a Big 10 Regular Season title and Big 10 Tournament championship.  The Big 10 looks like they will have (4) teams in the field, with (3) host sights, representing the West Coast well.  The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (48-9) should secure the No. 2 Nation Seed and lead the charge for (8) teams from the ACC in the field with (3) of them securing host opportunities.  Meanwhile, the Georgia...

‘27 IF Braylon Sheffield (FL) with an absolute 🚀 here, launching high off the RCF wall for a 3B. Sheffield, ranked 121 and committed to Virginia, is a super polished left-handed hitter with left side of the infield projection long term. The swing is tension-free with loose wrists and he generates easy bat speed with already present power to the pull side. This blast came inches away from being a home run and hitting a ball that far at Terry Park stadium is a significant shot. Sheffield also tripled in his second game of the weekend at...
