PG Year in Review: Events

Photo: PG All-American Classic
Year In Review: PG Events

ATLANTA, Ga. – Another year goes by of epic Perfect Game events. Thousands of prospects put their talents on display, and it was nothing short of exciting to watch. From Memorial Day through Jupiter, we had a full slate of the best amateur baseball on the face of this planet. It would take far too long to go into detail on every event, which we wish we could rehash the memories, but instead we will highlight just a few key moments from the 2022 season.

Memorial Day Classic Kicks Off Season with Play All-Across the Country

Memorial Day is the official start of summer baseball and the turn out proved just that. In six events, we saw 735 teams across the nation take the diamond.

The Memorial Day Classic in Puerto Rico saw just shy of 50 teams and was a competitive environment, to say the least. In the 16u division, ESCA Baseball Gold went an undefeated 5-and-0 while Eliezer Vazquez Cruz took home the MVP and deservedly so with a .500 average and 5 RBI to his name.

Things heated up in the desert with West Memorial Day Classic. PFA Matadors 2024 rolled through 16u division. Dominant performance by Alexander Umland on the mound in the championship game. The Oregon commit went 4 innings tossed in the championship game striking out two and not giving up a hit while alsoworking into the 90s with his heater.

The Southeast Memorial Day Classic, hosted at East Cobb Complex, boasted 11 different age groups with almost 400 teams. The East Cobb Astros picked up the hardware in the 15u division, starting the season off with a statement. Nolan Bernard was the MV-Pitcher. In 8 innings combined, he struck out 10 while giving up just two hits. The Astro’s went on to go 35-4 over the course of the summer.

Junior National Impresses Yet Again

Junior National is arguably one of the most “who is the next guy” events of the year. The underclassmen get to take main stage as they face off against the top talent around the country. Electric performances and dreams are realized at this event.

At the time, the uncommitted Drew Bellis dominated opposing hitters and quickly gained attention from those in attendance. He later went on to commit to Vanderbilt.

The pitchers weren’t the only ones shining, Elijah Clayton impressed offensively. Took a real solid round of BP, losing a few over the fence. He also flashed elite athleticism with a 6.56 second sixty. Easy range up the middle and possesses the tools to be a high-end defender as well.

Landon Beaver also had a stellar weekend. Found a barrel with every cut and did it with confidence. Smooth left-handed cut as he doubled in games. Quickly committed to in-state UAB after his performance.

The list could go on and on about success stories from Junior National. The event continues to hold the highest standard of any underclass showcase in the country. Dreams of playing college baseball becoming a reality while competing against the top prospects from around the country.

Perfect Game All-American Game Headlines on National Television

The Dick’s Sporting Goods All-American Game must watch TV for any of those with an interest in professional baseball, with these rosters littered full of big leaguers to-be. Last year the game took a turn for something we never really thought would happen, a no-hitter by the East squad’s rotation. After what went down last year, the West had revenge on the mind.

In what was a thrilling game that went into extra innings, the West ended up victorious after some clutch hitting by Ryder Helfrick and Cooper Pratt during extra innings. We also saw triple digits on the mound from Texas native, Travis Sykora, and it was only the second time triple digits have been recorded in the All-American Game.

The East came out with some fire offensively as Vanderbilt commit, Braden Holcomb singled to the right side off Sykora.

Garrett Baumann had a clean frame with his outing going 1-2-3 with mid-90s heat with heavy sink to it. With his size, a nightmare for opposing hitters. The UCF commit was solid on the biggest of stages this year and his high ranking reflects just that.

For those who do not know, the All-American Game is more than just a baseball game. Every year, the participants raise money that goes toward charities such as Make-A-Wish. These fine young men prove that with a common goal, we can all work together toward a greater good to help those in need.

A few mentionable fundraisers:

Gabe Gaeckle – $10,507
Gavin Grahovac - $8,367
Blake Mitchell - $6,053
Walker Jenkins - $5,117
George Lombard - $4,767

These All-American’s raised over $110,203 that will be directly donated to those in need. A massive thank you to all who participated. Everyone involved had a smile from ear-to-ear all weekend and that is truly what this event is all about.

Champions Crowned at WWBA

Hundreds of teams made the trek to Atlanta this Summer as we crowned National Champions from each high school age level. Some would argue that this is one of the hardest events in the country to win. You must have timely hitting and have a deep pitching staff you can trust to even have a chance at chasing down the hardware. Winning this event solidifies you as the true Champion of the summer.

National Champions – 18u: 643 DP Cougars Pagan; 17u: Ostingers Baseball Academy 2023; 16u: 5 Star National Black; 15u: Canes National 14u: Wow Factor National

As most know, Jupiter is the ultimate goal at the end of the fall for those entering their final year or two of prep baseball. When you hear the word Jupiter in the baseball world, you immediately think of mid-90s fastballs, home runs, & scouts on golf carts covering almost the entirety of Roger Dean. “Jupiter” once again lived up to the hype as we crowned another champion this fall.

World Champions – Top Tier 5 Star Roos Mafia

Final Team Rankings Announced

18u: Canes National/New York Mets Scout Team

Dozens of D1 bound prospects littered the Canes lineup this year. Took home the trophy at UBC and made solid playoff runs in the biggest events of the year. Came just shy of winning Jupiter as well. Massive years from Trent Caraway & PJ Morlando offensively. They also had a fully loaded pitching rotation. All-American Cal Randall & Oregon State commit Zach Swanson headlining the stellar staff.

17u: 5 Star National 17u Black

Possibly the best 5 Star squad we have ever seen. Cruised to a WWBA National Championship in Atlanta while also making deep runs in multiple other events. Jacob Kendall led the team with an average over .400 and 15 doubles to his name on the year. Florida State commit Hunter Carns is also starting to separate himself from the rest of the class. Solid defender behind the dish who can hit, boasting a .339 average with 59 hits on the year. Talent everywhere with 13+ D1 commits already on the roster.

16u: Artillery Baseball 2025 Scout

Very impressive year with an early win at MLK Championship. Went on to win National Elite Championship while also making it to the finals of WWBA National Championship. Really cemented the top spot in the rankings when the won the WWBA Sophomore World Championship this fall. Pair of Tennessee commits in Ty Thompson & Taylor Tracey dominated every event on the circuit this summer. Really strong bunch that plays with a chip on their shoulder.

15u: Wow Factor National 15u

Took home the WWBA National Championship while also being a favorite in multiple other events. Runner up in the Freshman World Championship. Also in the mix during the World Series and National Elite. Eight players ranked inside the top 100 Nationally. Keon Johnson hit .384 with 23 extra base knocks, two of those home runs. Elite type athlete who was a big reason Wow Factor National found success. Bryan Ravalo another multi tool guys ranked inside the top ten. All-Tournament Team honors at Freshman World Championship hitting over .400. Potential to defend top ranked spot next year as well.

Main Event Relocates to Orlando Due to Hurricane Ian

Nearly 1,000 prospects will make their way down to Orlando, Florida here in just a few days for the biggest showcase of the year. Many look toward this event as a proving point in the middle of winter and we have seen some heroic type displays over the years.

This year we would like to send our thoughts and prayers to those who were affected by Hurricane Ian earlier this year. The normal Fort Myers location had to be changed to Orlando due to circumstances of uncertainty. Many of the fields we use were directly impacted by Ian.

We want the people of Southwest Florida to know that we stand with them and are looking forward returning to Fort Myers as it hosts some of our biggest, most competitive events of the year. With that being said, let’s bring on the final event of the year and then turn over a new leaf into 2023!

‘28 OF Jakob Groeschel (OH) continues to impress with the bat on the circuit, picked up 2 2Bs in the first game today. Really athletic, went 4.4 on turn; easy to dream on all the traits. #MLKEast @PG_OhioValley pic.twitter.com/wOIwnGKnkg — Perfect Game Florida (@Florida_PG) January 17, 2026 2028 OF Jakob Groeschel (Springfield, Ohio) broke out at this event last year hitting a casual .909, and although he didn’t turn in quite the same performance, he hit a strong .462 with 4 extra-base hits, 5 walks, 5 bags and only struck out once. He’s a pretty dynamic athlete who can do a lot of things well, but the bat is the calling card as he just lives on the barrel and has no problem handling all kinds of pitching. It’s a simple swing, but he’s got fast hands and he can really impact the ball without being overly physical yet.  2030 RHP Michael Vazquez...

California All Region & Top Tools

The 2026 class is one of the best in recent memory for the state of California, with 18 players ranking among the top 100 in the Perfect Game national rankings.  Three PG All-Americans, IF Trey Ebel, OF Isaiah Hearn and RHP Logan Georges were all edged out of places on the California All-Region Team as a result.  And although the 2027 class doesn’t look as deep, it does feature three Top Six players in SS Dylan Seward, LHP Jared Grindlinger and SS Carter Hadnot. Not surprisingly, California high schools are very well represented in the Perfect Game Pre-Season Top 50 rankings, particularly with 2025 Trinity League champion St. John Bosco beginning the season as the top ranked team in the country.  A very deep Orange Lutheran squad holds down the third spot in the rankings, with 12th ranked De La Salle being the top team from Northern California.  Corona (17th),...

PG Draft: Mid-Major Picks to Click

Tyler Henninger

While Power 4 prospects tend to soak up the bulk of the industry buzz, there’s plenty of legitimate talent lurking at the mid-major level. These are competitive programs that are loaded with players who have real tools, physicality, and performance track records that translate beyond their conference. Below are nine mid-major prospects we expect evaluators to be in early and often on this spring. Ethan Norby, LHP, East Carolina (Rank: 155) Norby is an undersized left-hander, but has produced strong numbers over two years at ECU. The left-hander has produced a 3.80 ERA with 182 strikeouts over 149 1/3 innings. While the velocity does not stand out, Norby can still miss bats with the heater. It works in the low-90’s and creeps towards 95 mph at times. Quality extension for his size and high spin allow that offering to get on hitters, resulting in weak contact as well as whiffs....

Georgia HS All Region & Top Tools

Georgia has its usual depth of high-level athletes and Perfect Game All-Americans, although three 2027 players did make the All-Region team.  There are an unusual number of two-way prospects among the All-Region players, a testament to the big arms that the state has right now. Two Georgia high schools are ranked in the top 10 of the PG Pre-Season High School Top 50 rankings and the Georgia high school ranks are annually among the most competitive in the country.  Etowah is the highest ranked team at 5th overall, while Blessed Trinity Catholic checks in at 8th.  Parkview is the only other Georgia team in the top 50, holding down the 34th spot.   OF-RHP Dexter McCleon Jr will be fixture on the Georgia All-Region team for the next two years but the top ranked prospect in the 2028 class will have to take a back seat to his elders this year.  McCleon’s absurd...

Baseball Meets Hollywood For Great Cause

BASEBALL MEETS HOLLYWOOD FOR A GREAT CAUSE    There’s no crying in baseball, but there is laughing, and there was lots and lots of it -- for a great cause -- last Saturday night in Hollywood, California. Perfect Game and its Believe in Baseball Foundation assembled a star-studded cast of comics and guests for the inaugural “In the Spirit of the Game” dinner and auction. The event was held at the iconic Laugh Factory, a historic venue that, in baseball terms, would be equivalent to Dodger Stadium or Wrigley Field. Late-night superstar Jay Leno took a turn on stage. So did comedic aces Tiffany Haddish, Nikki Glaser, Dustin Ybarra and Gary Cannon. “It was 4 ½ hours of straight laughter,” said PG commissioner Dennis Gilbert, still beaming a couple of days later. “It was a really nice success.” No one kept score at the event, but...
