Georgia HS Dream Team & Top Tools

The senior class in Georgia has the state’s normal combination of high-level talent and depth of talent, as the state produced six 2023 Perfect Game All-Americans, led by dynamic SS Bryce Clavon, and currently has 20 players ranked in the top 150 in the PG national class rankings.  The class especially stands out for its overall speed, as there may be as many 6.4 and below runners in Georgia alone as there is in the rest of the country.

Surprisingly, the 2025 class may be the worst in memory for the state unless things change dramatically over the next 5-6 months.  Georgia doesn’t have a player ranked in the top 50 in the current PG 2025 class rankings and only 10 players in the Top 150.  The imbalance of talent seems especially prevalent on the mound, where the state doesn’t have a pitcher ranked in the top 80 nationally in either the 2024 or 2025 classes, although things appear to return to “normal” with the 2026 class.

Six teams from Georgia are featured in the Top 50 of the Perfect Game pre-season team rankings, including Lowndes High School at 16th nationally and Parkview High School at 18th.  Houston County, which finished 2023 as the top ranked team in Georgia at sixth overall, checks in next at 25th overall.

C – Levi Clark (Sr., Walton HS, Ga.)

Clark dominated the 2023 summer/fall travel circuit with his bat, hitting .441-6-33/1.429 OPS in 30 games and earning a spot in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.  He’s the fifth ranked catcher nationally in the PG class rankings and the 47th overall player.

1B – Chase Fralick (Sr., McIntosh HS, Ga.)

Fralick has always a primary catcher but it’s become very obvious that he’s an offense first player with a potentially high-level bat.  The 6-foot-3, 210-pound left-handed hitter was a PG 2023 first team All-Tournament selection after hitting .440-7-36/1.313 OPS in 48 games, numbers that virtually matched his 2023 spring production at McIntosh High School (.475-8-56/1.452)

MIF – Bryce Clavon (Sr., Kell HS, Ga.)

Clavon’s dynamic athletic ability makes him the top ranked Georgia prospect in the PG 2024 class rankings at 19th nationally.  He has the base high level physical tools with 6.41 speed and an easy 90+ mph arm but the right-handed hitter also rakes, having hit .406 in high school last year and .427-2-20 with 17 steals in 33 PG tournament games in 2023.

MIF – Arnold Abernathy (Sr., North Cobb HS, Ga.)

Abernathy is an extremely quick-twitch athlete with 6.38 speed in the sixty and huge range at shortstop on defense.  He has a very accurate left-handed bat and profiles as a top of the order hitter at the next level.  Abernathy is currently ranked 74th in the Perfect Game class rankings and is signed with Tennessee.  His tool package is very similar to 2018 PG All-American and 2019 second round pick Nasim Nunez, another Georgia product.

3B –  Conrad Cason (Sr., Greater Atlanta Christian School)

As befits one of the youngest top prospects in the 2024 class, Cason was one of the most improved players throughout the summer and fall circuit, eventually landing at 36th overall in the PG rankings and earning a spot in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.  A 6.47 runner in the sixty, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Mississippi State commit hit .352-4-16 in 23 PG tournament games last year.  He’s also been up 94 mph off the mound.

OF – Ty Peeples (Jr., Franklin County HS, Ga.)

Peeples was one of the fastest rising prospects in the 2025 class throughout the summer, as the 6-foot-2, 175-pound left-handed hitter stood out with his bat and physical projectability at tournaments all summer.  He hit .354-5-30 with 30 walks in 34 games in PG events during the summer and is primed for a big 2024 as he continues to get stronger.

OF – Bo Walker (Sr., Starrs Mill HS, Ga.)

Walker has always been known as a high-level athlete, with his 6.37 speed being his carrying tool both on the baseball field and the football field, but his prospect stock exploded at the 2023 WWBA World Championships.  The 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitter showed out with .450-2-8 numbers for the Home Plate Chili Dogs and really impressed with his power/speed combination.  Walker is poised for a big 2024 spring.

OF – Michael Mullinax (Sr., North Cobb Christian HS, Ga.)

Mullinax has long been considered one of the most tooled-up players in the 2024 class and the PG All-American posted some impressive numbers at the 2023 PG National Showcase, including a 6.31 sixty and a 98 mph outfield throw.  Mullinax is a switch-hitter at the plate with lots of raw power from both sides.

RHP Nate Taylor (Sr., Buford HS, Ga.)

A 2023 Perfect Game All-American, Taylor has a firm enough fastball that tops out at 94-95 mph to go with a big sweeping slider and solid change up but it’s more his command that stands out than his raw stuff.  He threw almost 70% strikes in his 26 PG innings in 2023 and consistently works ahead in counts while mixing his pitches.  Taylor is signed with Georgia and is ranked 82nd in the PG class rankings and is the number one ranked right-handed pitcher in Georgia.

RHP Tate Strickland (Sr., Harrison HS, Ga.)

Strickland is a very high ceiling arm who topped out at 97 mph at three different PG events in 2023 and regularly pitches in the 93-95 range to go with a mid-80’s sharp and late slider.  He’s also a very good natural athlete with 6.6 speed and a very projectable 6-foot-3, 185-pound build.  The next step for Strickland, as it is with many hard throwing young arms, is more and better strikes, as he posted a 54% strike ratio in PG events in 2023.

LHP R.J. Cope (So., Georgia Premier Academy, Ga.)

Cope and fellow sophomore southpaw Connor Langdon (Perry HS, Ga.) stand out as the future of Georgia pitching, which is surprisingly thin in the senior and junior classes.  Cope is an outstanding athlete who is already 6-foot-8, 230-pounds and still growing.  He has a four-pitch mix he throws for strikes, including an 88-91 mph fastball that is just going to keep adding velocity as he gets more physically mature.

RHP Cole Royer (Sr., Pierce County HS, Ga.)

Royer stands out with his long 6-foot-6, 195-pound build and for his power stuff and high ceiling on the mound.  He throws from a cross body delivery with an extended ¾’s arm slot that is very tough on right-handed hitters and has topped out at 95 mph with a big sweeping slider that has posted 3,000 rpm spin rates.  Royer is signed with Georgia Tech.

RHP Jackson Barberi (Sr., Brookwood HS, Ga.)

Barberi is one of the youngest and most projectable pitchers in the 2024 class and is a potential late riser for the 2024 draft, when he’ll still be 17 years old.  The 6-foot-4, 185-pound right-hander works up to 94 mph with his fastball to go with a low 80’s slider and change up.  He’s also a high-level athlete with 6.8 speed and was named both All-Tournament (Pitcher) and All-Tournament (Hitter) at multiple PG events in 2023.

UT –  Connor Shouse (Sr., Pickens County HS, Ga.)

Conventional scout wisdom has always had Shouse as a future pitcher, one that already comes armed with a 93-95 mph fastball and a swing and miss slider and plenty of physical projection remaining.  But the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Shouse continues to improve as a hitter and shortstop and opened eyes in 2023 by hitting .427-7-54/1.260 OPS in 43 PG tournament games, showing power that he’d never shown before.  He’s very similar to fellow Georgia native Dylan Cease at the same age.

Georgia Region Top Tools

Best Hitter for Average: Chase Fralick (Sr., McIntosh HS, Ga.)

The way that Fralick squares up everything, combined with his patience at the plate (31 walks versus 13 strikeouts in 48 PG games in 2023) makes one wonder if the left-handed hitter might end up being a dominant college hitter at Auburn and a potential very high 2024 draft.

Best Hitter for Power: Alex Hernandez (Sr., Forsyth Central HS, Ga.)

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitting Hernandez has big bat speed and has posted 100+ mph exit velocities.  He hit .419-6-36/1.329 OPS in 37 PG tournament games in 2023, homering at six different PG tournaments and being named All-Tournament at all eight tournaments he played at.  Hernandez could be a two-way prospect at Georgia Tech, as he’s also 90-93 mph off the mound and went 7-1, 1.38 with 77 strikeouts in 54 innings for Forsyth Central HS last spring.

Best Runner: Terrence Kiel II (Sr., Pace Academy, Ga.)

As usual, Georgia is full of sub-6.5 runners and could easily claim honors as “The fastest state in the country.” Kiel is a 6.31 runner and that speed is the kind that plays up on the outfield and on the bases.  Not surprisingly, Kiel is also a premium three-star football talent and is the son of the late Terrence Kiel, who played in the NFL for four seasons.

Best Defensive Catcher: Cayden Sheffield (Sr., North Paulding HS, Ga.)

Paulding combines nice size (6-foot-2, 195-pounds), plenty of lower half athleticism (6.80 runner) and big raw arm strength (84 mph in catching drills at the 2023 PG National Showcase).  He has as much game experience as any catcher in the country as the long-time receiver for the East Cobb Astros.

Best Defensive Infielder: Keon Johnson (So., First Presbyterian Day HS, Ga.)

This would have been Rustan Rigdon (Sr., Metter HS, Ga.) but the Vanderbilt signee had TJ surgery in the fall and won’t be able to throw this spring.  Johnson is the third ranked overall prospect in the 2026 class and a dynamic athlete who stands out in all aspects of the game, especially on defense.

Best Defensive Outfielder: Michael Mullinax (Sr., North Cobb Christian HS, Ga.)

Mullinax has all the physical tools to be an elite upper-level defensive outfielder.  His natural comparison is to former PG All-American and current Kansas City Royals outfield Drew Waters.

Best Defensive Arm: Connor Shouse (Sr., Pickens County HS, Ga.)

Shouse has lots of athleticism in his profile, highlighted by his versatility on the field and big arm at whatever position he plays, throwing 99 mph from the outfield, 97 from the infield and 95 off of the bump.

Best Fastball: RHP Cole Royer (Sr., Pierce County HS, Ga.)

Royer’s combination of 6-foot-6 frame and extended cross body release on his fastball make the pitch play up in velocity and effectiveness.  And he probably isn’t finished adding velocity.

Best Off-Speed Stuff:  Thorpe Musci (Sr., Parkview HS, Ga.)

Musci is a 6-foot, 190-pound right-hander who works in the 91-93 mph range and will top out higher with his fastball but it is his upper 70’s slider that generates many of his swing and misses.  Musci struck out 99 hitters in 69 innings as a junior while going 10-1, 2.23 for Parkview High School.  His change up is a solid pitch that he will be able to use more at Georgia Tech.

Best Pitchability:  RHP Nate Taylor (Sr., Buford HS, Ga.)

Any premium power arm who can throw near 70% strikes at this level, with a four-pitch arsenal to choose from, will rank high in pitchability.  It’s a great indicator for predicting future success as well.

Best Multi-Sport Athlete: Bryce Clavon (Sr., Kell HS, Ga.)

Clavon is considered a three-star quarterback recruit in football and has passed for 4,276 yards and 43 touchdowns in 19 games the past two seasons in addition to rushing for 1,162 yards and 19 more touchdowns.  Warm up time before PG All-American Classic workouts and the game seemed to consist of far more of Clavon throwing routes to his baseball teammates than actual baseball warm ups.  Interestingly, All-Georgia Region first baseman Chase Fralick is a high-level tennis player with a big youth tennis resume.

Cape Cod Notebook No. 1

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Cape Cod League Scouting Notebook  Maverick Rizy | Ole Miss | RHP | Brewster Whitecaps  The towering 6-foot-9, 250-pound right-hander continues to stand out with one of the more unique looks on the Cape, pairing a massive frame with a low three-quarter slot that creates difficult angles for hitters. While his fastball velocity was down from its typical mid-90s range during this look, working mostly 90-92 mph, it still generated plenty of swing-and-miss. He paired the heater with an 81-83 mph gyro slider featuring tight bullet-spin action and mixed in an 85-mph changeup with quality separation. Rizy battled his command early in the outing I saw, before settling in to strike out five over three innings, showing the ability to adjust as the game progressed. Through 12.2 Cape League innings, he has recorded 18 strikeouts, and his combination of size, deception, and projectability...

Merren fits the mold as a true power hitting corner guy but can play all over on the dirt. He finished the week going 9-15 that included two doubles, a triple, and two homers.
