Cape Cod Notebook No. 1

Photo: Rowan Kelly (Miranda Flores/UCSB Athletics)
Cape Cod League Scouting Notebook

Maverick Rizy | Ole Miss | RHP | Brewster Whitecaps

The towering 6-foot-9, 250-pound right-hander continues to stand out with one of the more unique looks on the Cape, pairing a massive frame with a low three-quarter slot that creates difficult angles for hitters. While his fastball velocity was down from its typical mid-90s range during this look, working mostly 90-92 mph, it still generated plenty of swing-and-miss. He paired the heater with an 81-83 mph gyro slider featuring tight bullet-spin action and mixed in an 85-mph changeup with quality separation. Rizy battled his command early in the outing I saw, before settling in to strike out five over three innings, showing the ability to adjust as the game progressed. Through 12.2 Cape League innings, he has recorded 18 strikeouts, and his combination of size, deception, and projectability continues to make him a high follow.

Rowan Kelly | UC Santa Barbara | OF | Orleans Firebirds

Kelly has emerged as one of the more polished offensive performers on the Cape this summer, combining elite bat-to-ball skills with advanced strike-zone discipline and consistent quality of contact. Following a standout sophomore campaign at UC Santa Barbara in which he slashed .342/.440/.487 with 78 hits, 15 doubles, and nearly as many walks (30) as strikeouts (33), Kelly has seamlessly carried that approach into Orleans, hitting .308/.471/.410 through his first 11 games. Despite a line-drive approach, he has flashed impressive top-end exit velocities that hint at additional power to come, while his elite contact ability, disciplined swing decisions, and offensive consistency continue to make him one of the Cape League's more intriguing bats.

Tyler Smolinski | Kansas State | INF | Harwich Mariners

Smolinski has emerged as one of the Cape League's hottest hitters this summer, pairing an efficient barrel path with a smooth left-handed swing that consistently produces loud, pull-side contact and extra-base damage. After a breakout sophomore season at Kansas State, where he slashed .339/.440/.619 with 18 doubles and 45 RBI, he's carried that production into the Cape Cod League, hitting .309/.427/.574 through his first 19 games with Harwich. His 11 extra-base hits, including four home runs, are a testament to how well his power has translated to wood bats, making him one of the Cape's most dangerous offensive performers this summer.

Payton Manca | Florida State | LHP | Brewster Whitecaps

The 6-foot-6, 256-pound left-hander features a big, durable frame and an easy, repeatable operation that allows him to consistently attack the strike zone. In the start I saw, Manca tossed five scoreless innings, striking out five. His fastball sat 90-93 mph and accounted for 87% of his pitches (60 of 69), yet it continued to generate plenty of swing-and-miss and put-away ability thanks to its life through the zone and his ability to locate it to all four quadrants of the strike zone. He complemented the heater with a low-80s slider, a mid-to-upper-70s curveball, and a low-80s changeup that has flashed quality swing-and-miss. Manca's combination of size, strike-throwing ability, and confidence in his fastball has helped establish him as one of the Cape League's most effective starters this summer.

Bino Watters | LSU | OF/1B | Chatham Anglers

Watters has carried the momentum from two highly productive seasons at Notre Dame into the Cape Cod League before transferring to LSU. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound left-handed hitter features a smooth, controlled swing with an advanced approach, consistently finding the barrel while showing plenty of juice to all fields. Across two seasons at Notre Dame, he slashed .343/.442/.584 with 131 hits, 27 doubles, 19 home runs, and 90 RBI, establishing himself as one of the ACC's most productive bats. He's continued that offensive success with the Chatham Anglers this summer, hitting .300/.405/.400 through his first 17 games while drawing 11 walks. Watters polished offensive approach, consistent barrel control, and all-fields power give him one of the more complete offensive profiles on the Cape this summer.

Coppy's Corner: July 21 Summer Edition

John Coppolella
Article Image
The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. And, who knows, maybe somewhere out there Jessica Biel is reading it.    Player of the Week: Coen Niclai – Wareham Gatemen  The Internet tells me that 12 MLB players have come from Alaska, 10 of whom were from Anchorage, and the best of which is Curt Schilling. Niclai, who is also...

15u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 Noah Rumley (‘29 NC) has been up to 90 so far in this start w/ 8 Ks in 4 innings of work. Really jumps out of the hand at foot strike w/ some ride to it; has also mixed in a SL w/ horizontal action. #WWBA @PG_Coastal pic.twitter.com/OcU57a3Syl — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 21, 2026 Noah Rumley (2029, Summerfield, N.C.) got the ball for GBC Lopez 2029 15u in their final game of pool play and dominated, going up against a tough lineup in the East Cobb Astros. The 6-foot-2 left-handed pitcher ended up going five innings, allowing only one hit and one run, while striking out nine. It’s premium stuff at the 15u level as he worked easily in the upper-80s, topping at 90 mph in the first. The breaking ball showed two-plane shape in the upper-70s as well. There’s a ton of things to like already and even...

Ranked fifth nationally entering the tournament, Florida Burn 2027 Scout left no doubt who the best team was at the 17U BCS National Championship. Burn finished a perfect 9-0 tournament, earning an 11-1 semifinal victory before defeating No. 86-ranked Original Florida Pokers 2027 National, 9-1, Tuesday afternoon at JetBlue Park. Burn seized control early and never looked back in a game that ended after the fifth inning per Perfect Game’s mercy rule. Burn carried its explosive offense into the championship game as Braedon Mackay launched a two-run home run in the first inning, giving his team an early 2-0 lead. Mackay’s home run sparked a five-run opening inning, setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon. The Florida commit later earned tournament MVP honors after helping lead Burn to an unbeaten championship run. “I was just trying to get something started,”...

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
17u BCS Scout Notes: Day 1 Kenniel Nieves Medero (2027 SS, PR)  Nieves Medero put together another quality offensive showing, continuing the consistent production he displayed throughout the tournament. The 8.5 PG grade shortstop features quick hands and does an excellent job creating separation with strong hip rotation, allowing him to generate easy bat speed through the zone. The swing remains balanced and efficient with present feel for the barrel. A polished offensive profile with tools that continue to translate in game action.  Oscar Cambero (2027 3B, FL)  Cambero turned in an impressive offensive performance, smoking a triple into the gap while showcasing both speed and gap-to-gap power. The right-handed hitter generates quality bat speed and consistently impacts the baseball with authority. Plays with a high motor on both sides of the ball and competes with energy...

Texas Region Scout Notes

Geoff Billock
Article Image
Jack Soete (2028, Houston, Texas) had a big weekend for HP 2028 Woods. Went 4-9 at the plate with two doubles and a home run. Strong approach at the top of the order as well, drawing five walks. Closed stance with an athletic, projectable frame. Gains ground on the stride and stays on plane with his swing. Bat-to-ball ability is present and power should continue to develop. Lot to like from the athletic, left-handed bat. Kai Anderson (2028, Missouri City, Texas) was an absolute force for 2028 South Texas Sliders 16U Pierce. Went 4-8 with two doubles, six runs batted in, and a no-doubt walk-off home run in the semifinal. Some physicality in the frame. Leverages the upper half decently as he shows some ability to elevate with more than enough juice. Some pretty serious flashes as a middle of the order bat at the next level. Valentin Ceballos (2028, New Braunfels, Texas) was extremely loud...

UBC Midwest X Atlantic Notes: Part 1

Blaine Peterson
Article Image
Jack Postma (2028, Barrington, IL) made an impression in Chicago this week. A 6-foot-5 right hander with a starter pitch mix. Topped out at 93 in his outing at UBC Midwest and pitched at 88-93 for 2 innings on the mound. Slider showed late horizontal bite at its best when finished out front. Change up is a usable third pitch with fading action and ability to miss bats. Clean overall operation in the delivery. Upside with added stability in the arm action. Chance to be one of the top prospects in Illinois and potentially the country with necessary adjustments moving forward.  Connor Basinski (2028, Columbia, IL) an athletic player with 2-way potential. Physicality stands out for a player in the 2028 class. Swung the bat impressively well in Chicago. Hits from a wide stance and stays balanced using strength and leverage to drive the baseball to all fields. Launched a long pull side...

15u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 4

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
15u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 Mason Conner (2029, Palestine, Texas) was a force in the middle-of-the-order for Gold Culture. The right-handed hitter starts from a medium stance with in-line feet and a low handset with a low back elbow, utilizes a negative leg lift stride. Strides through and uncoils the lower half well and creates separation in the back shoulder. Solid hand speed with a flat bat plane and feel to leverage and lift. Impacts the ball well with feel to impact and drive. The shortstop showed the power upside belting a two-run homer over the fence in left field and added a two-RBI knock later in the game. Medium 6-foot, 175-pound frame that was consistently on the barrel and showed a good approach at the plate working two walks. Lennon Dunn (2029, Mansfield, Texas) competed and showed the upside on the mound for Stix 2029 Scout. The right-handed pitcher...
