Coastal Champ. Scout Notes: Day 4

Coastal Championships Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

On a hot, humid day in North Carolina, the first round of the 16U playoffs began late this morning. The Rockies 16U Grassley took on the Stars Baseball 16U Blue. In a thrilling, back and forth contest, the Stars Baseball 16U Blue came out on top in tenth inning.

Lucas Glover (High Point, NC 2022) is a lanky, long armed 6-5 righthanded pitcher playing for the Rockies 16U Grassley. This uncommitted young man has a fastball that misses barrels, which induces lot of broken bats and weak hits. There was late cut on the fastball that topped 86 mph and sat in the low 80's. Mixing in some sliders and curveballs, the hitters never got their timing down on him. He only gave up three weak hits in his six innings of work.

In the semifinals game between the Stars Baseball 16U Blue versus the 5 Star Carolina 16U National team, it was close early on, but the 5 Stars pulled away at the end for 7-2 win.

Michael Posse (Pittsboro, NC 2022) is a 6-1 righthanded pitcher with good arm action and an over the top arm slot that has good carry on the ball. The uncommitted young man has a fastball with good life on it, topping 87 mph today. He mixed in the breaking ball and kept the hitters off balance. Posse worked quickly, going right after the hitters all game long. With a few tweaks, Posse will make large jumps over the next year. He finished his day going four innings with four strikeouts for the 5 Star Carolina 16U National team.

The NCBA Golden Spikes always bring a roster with highly talented athletes and today was no different. Four players really stood out today. Win Scott started on the mound and Paddy McGonigal picked up where he left off. James Newsome and Zack McRae led the offense.

Win Scott (Jamestown, NC 2021) is a 6-2 lefthanded pitcher with a very quick arm, a high three-quarters arm slot, and great extension. The uncommitted young man has very smooth and easy mechanics with a great explosion at the end, which gives the fastball late life. Scott was in command of this game from pitch one going four innings with eight strikeouts, topping 88 mph. He hid the ball well, which made it very difficult for the hitters to pick up. Breakout season in the making!

Paddy McGonigal (Greensboro, NC 2021) came in for relief and didn’t miss a beat! He attacked the hitters from the get-go and blew his fastball right by them. The uncommitted righthanded pitcher was spot on today, moving his fastball in and out on the corners and elevating when necessary. McGonigal was unhittable with a fastball that topped 88 mph and sat in the mid 80's. He went three innings with five strikeouts. There is a lot to like about his swing and miss fastball as well as his tight, sharp slider with straight downward action.

James Newsome (Greensboro, NC 2021) is a 6-6 big, strong physical first baseman who is a presence at the plate and on the field. The very twitchy and athletic VMI commit has a great eye at the plate and is very patient as he only swings at balls that he can drive and drive he did. Newsome smoked a ball to the left center wall for a stand up double. He is very comfortable at the plate with a nice, loose swing. He loads his backside well and generate lots of power. A double-digit homerun season is not out of the question for this young man!

Zack McRae (Greensboro, NC 2021) barrels, barrels, and barrels! All he did today was absolutely crush the baseball. The uncommitted infielder had quite a game today, getting a hit at every one of his plate appearances. McRae capped off his day with a triple to the right center gap, scoring one run and showing off his speed around the bases. He has a good trigger and hitting tools with good barrel control. He finished his day going three for three with a double, triple, and two RBI.

The 5-foot-10, 225-pound two-way player ran the fastball up to 95 mph and it comes out of the hand easy. He pairs that with a nasty curveball at 80-81 (2800+ RPM) and mixes in a firm changeup to left-handed hitters....

I mean, these tournaments are so short, eight games in four days, they're tired, but they just kept competing and finding a way to get runs across and make plays when they needed to. In the first inning, Cannon Mayes got the starting nod for eXposure and held ATL Lightning to a scoreless frame with a tailor-made 6-4-3 double play ball to send it to the home half of the opening...

VSA, Swamp Crowned Co-Champs After Nine-Inning Battle After three and a half hours under the hot Florida sun, VSA Sluggers 18 and Swamp Baseball’s City of Palms Championship battle ended in fitting fashion, with both teams sharing the title. The two teams remained tied 9-9 through nine innings before lightning in the area brought the championship matchup to a halt Monday afternoon. The two local programs have built a competitive rivalry, with several close matchups stemming from their proximity and familiarity with each other. Their history was evident throughout Monday’s matchup as emotions ran high, resulting in several heated exchanges and the eventual ejection of Swamp head coach Brian Porvaznik. Just three weeks earlier, the two teams met in the championship game of the BCS Qualifier, where VSA earned a 6-4 victory. Swamp entered Monday’s matchup looking to flip...
