College Notebook: November 21

UCF Knights

2025 Highlights: When Rich Wallace took over the program in 2024 and his club bullied its way to an at-large NCAA bid, expectations and energy surrounding the program returned to the glory days of the early 2000’s. However, the void created by the class that fell short during the turnover, his club struggled to a (29-26) record last year, finished 13th overall in the Big 12 and fell short of the conference tournament. The offense was one of the nation’s best hitting .319 as a team, scoring over 7-runs per game and they were a solid defensive squad. The issue came with the inconsistency on the mound, the inability to figure out a rotation and struggled to secure the backend of games. The staff feels strongly that they addressed their issues from a recruiting standpoint and are optimistic heading into the new year.

Impact Returners:

· Junior Andrew Williamson (.352/.662/.448, 19 doubles, 13 HR, 53 RBI, 13 SB) is one of the top bats in the Big 12 and has a chance to be a Day 1 draft in July

· Senior DeAmez Ross (.359/.466/.429, 15 doubles, 35 RBI, 14 SB) is one of the best table-setters in the nation, primed for another big year

· Braden Calise (.301/.33/.406, 6 doubles, 29 RBI) is a red-shirt senior and a team captain who is an elite glove fielding over .980 for his career

· Red-shirt senior Kris Sosnowski (5.22, 3-4, 15 app, 29.1 IP, 24:8 K:BB) RHP workhorse out of the pen with mid-90s heat, can give them length and start in a pinch

· Junior Camden Wicker (4.59, 0-2, 12 app, 7 starts, 33.1 IP, 31:13 K:BB) power arm with a fastball that will reach 96 mph and a full repertoire to go with it

· Junior Matt Sauser (4.58, 3-2, 9 starts, 37.1 IP, 31:12 K:BB) midweek starter that earned his way into weekend rotation, could be the cornerstone of the staff

· Grant Siegel (3.88, 5-2, 12 starts, 53.1 IP, 44:22 K:BB) senior RHP with a wealth experience that should be a vital piece in the rotation

Intriguing Newcomers:

· Stetson transfer Landon Moran (.268/.395/.398, 9 doubles, 5 HR, 41 RBI, 9 SB) rangy infielder with a sweet lefthanded stroke

· Javier Crespo (.340/.476/.454, 6 doubles, 4 HR, 35 RBI) is an FIU transfer who is a pure hitter with the ability to defend most anywhere on the clay

· Clemson Austin Jacobs didn’t see time on the field for the Tigers last season but is as steady as they come with the glove and the bat, knows how to win games

· Caden Gaskin (.276/.414/.382) saw limited time at South Carolina last year but is a tremendous athlete with incredible upside

· Freshman Jordan Lodise has the complete skillset for a middle infielder and could push his way into the starting lineup

· Sebastian Hurtado is a freshman catcher who is a legit defender and projectable stick that will be a middle of the order presence long-term

· Zach Malvasio is a physical corner outfielder with huge offensive upside, 6-2/215 with tremendous projection for a freshman

· Freshman Steven Chuka has put together an impressive fall and will force his way into the lineup at some point with his left-handed power

· Maryville transfer Braden Smith is an elite RHP with a fastball in the 92-95 range and will make a push to be in the rotation

· Sacred Heart transfer Joey Trombley is an imposing 6-6/240 with a mid-90s heater and will play a major role on the bump with his strong right-arm

· Chandler Dorsey transferred in from LSU and brings his athletic 6-4/235 frame and electric fastball that will reach 97 mph

2026 Outlook: The Knights will need some big contributions on the offensive side from newcomers to duplicate the production of last year, but the talent is there to generate runs in a variety of ways. Head coach Rich Wallace is master at building a lineup and plays a high-pressure version of offense that stresses opponents. The season really hinges on pitching coach, Drew Thomas, molding the staff into a cohesive unit with consistency in the rotation and the ability to secure the last third of the game.

Texas Longhorns

2025 Highlights:
The Longhorns experienced one of the most successful seasons in program history in ’25 as they won the SEC regular season championship and spent much of the season atop the polls as the No. 1 team in the nation. Jim Scholssnagle, in his first year in Austin, led his club to 44 wins and won their first seven SEC series on their way to 22 conference wins. Pitching coach, Max Weiner, once again molded their staff into one of the best in the nation anchored by a lockdown bullpen. However, timing is everything and they would finish the season going (5-5) while failing to advance past the Regional they hosted in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Impact Returners:

· Junior Ethan Mendoza (.333/.476/.437, 9 doubles, 5 HR, 35 RBI, 15 SB) led the club in hitting last season and is a lock down defender at any spot on the infield

· Sophomore Adrian Rodriguez (.313/.516/.410, 14 doubles, 7 HR, 23 RBI, 15 SB) coming off a Freshman All-American campaign, has added noticeable physicality

· Casey Borba (.278/.574/.410, 10 doubles, 12 HR, 47 RBI) enters his junior year as one of the biggest power threats for his club

· Graduate student Luke Harrison (3.06, 5-1, 15 starts, 70.2 IP, 72:24 K:BB) is one of the nation’s most reliable lefthanded starters, brings a wealth of experience back

· Senior Ruger Riojas (5.61, 9-3, 18 app, 10 starts, 69.0 IP, 62:21 K:BB) filled a variety of roles and returns his mid-90s heater with refined off-speed offerings

· Sophomore Dylan Volantis (1.94, 4-1, 23 app, 12 saves, 51.0 IP, 74:12 K:BB) was Nation Freshman of the Year and may make the jump into the rotation

· Jason Flores (2.78, 4-2, 14 app, 32.1 IP, 27:10 K:BB) coming off stellar freshman campaign as vital piece out of the bullpen

· Senior Max Grubbs (2.84, 6-2, 22 app, 5 saves, 57.0 IP, 61:14 K:BB) was a cornerstone to the bullpen that locked down the end of games, resilient arm primed for huge year

Intriguing Newcomers:

· Junior Carson Tinney (.348/.753/.498, 13 doubles, 17 HR, 53 RBI) one of the top transfers in the nation and possibly the first catcher off the board in July

· Aiden Robbins (.422/.652/.537, 19 doubles, 5 triples, 6 HR, 38 RBI, 20 SB) junior outfielder who is one of the top offensive players in the portal

· Junior Haiden Leffew (4.46, 4-1, 27 app, 4 saves, 34.1 IP, 59:19 K:BB) elite LHP who is one of the top transfer arms and has a chance to be an early draft this July

· Freshman LHP Jack McKernan has filled out his frame and will feature a fastball that reaches 95 mph to go with a hard slider and quality changeup

· Sam Cozart is a freshman RHP 6-6/260 with advanced strike throwing ability to go with a mid-90s fastball, cutter, curve and splitter mix

· Freshman Brett Crossland is a strong 6-5/250 RHP who will reach the upper-90s and has added several quality off-speed pitches to compliment his curve

· Brody Walls is a super-athletic freshman RHP with a mid-90s heater and wideout slider and emerging alternate off-speed pitches

· With centerfield speed and instincts, freshman Anthony Pack Jr. will be an impact on both sides with his lefthanded power swing and barrel accuracy

· Junior Ashton Larson (.256/.487/.423, 3 doubles, 2 HR, 12 RBI) has added significant physicality and look primed to duplicate his All-American numbers from 2024

2026 Outlook: The Longhorns had their challenges with depth on the mound last year and have addressed that concern in a profound way. With returning veterans that filled roles as starters and relievers there is serious length to this year’s staff and the stock of strong-armed freshman should keep them in most every game. Offensively, there is speed at the top and bottom of the lineup and if the transfers provide the juice they have shown in the past to the middle of the lineup, this club should score runs in bunches. Jim Schlossnagle has created an expectation of winning national championships in his short time in Austin and this club has all the elements on paper to be a contender. It feels like anything short of a trip to Omaha would be a disappointment for the Longhorns in 2026.

They dip into Mississippi to land one of the premier arms and one that’s stood out on the circuit for quite some time. It’s a fast arm and the athleticism certainly shines working down the slope. The velocity has continued to tick up over the last calendar year and reached into the low-90s towards the end of the summer. He’s confident in his changeup and the breaking ball is...

Player of the Year: Asher Williams It was an incredible year for Williams that was rewarded with a trip to the 14U Select Fest, before some more impressive play in the fall. He came to the plate almost 250 times in PG tournaments throughout 2025 and reached base in well over half of them, hitting to a .500 AVG while slugging a 14U circuit best 12 bombs and driving in 113 runs. The numbers on the surface are ridiculous, but when you look at the high-level events he put them up in, it makes it even more impressive. Pitcher of the Year: Tristan Blalock Blalock earns this honor after a dominant 2025 where he struck out 85 batters in just 48.2 innings of work with a minuscule 1.58 ERA. This included several strong performances at many national level tournaments and showcases where he was able to bully some of the best hitters in the country. It’s hard not to fall in love with...

Hitter of the Year: Landon Bonner The 2028 class saw many players from across the country take the next step in their development as they entered the High School ranks. There were huge performances from highly ranked players on the PG circuit as well as some under-the-radar guys who burst onto the scene. Landon Bonner came into Sophomore National as a Top 500 ranked player and after an impressive showing, left with all eyes on him as a rankings riser in the class. The left-handed hitting shortstop from The Colony, Texas, had a summer to remember with All-Tournament Team selections in three of his next four events culminating with a historic performance at the 2025 PG 15U WWBA National Championship. The Hebron High School prep went 20-for-24 in nine games for 5 Star Mafia 15U Black with four homeruns and 12 runs batted in. He also scored 17 runs and finished with a mind-boggling 2.500...

Hitter of the Year: Koa Romero is the Hitter of the Year for the 16u group, as he would come to every premier event of the summer and earn All-Tournament honors (Beast of the East, 16/17u WWBA, Jupiter) in every single one. Over 82 plate appearances, Romero would pump ten homeruns with forty two RBI and sixteen walks, good for a .378 average and 1.339 OPS. The performance on volume at the best events of the year pushed Romero over the edge here, as he’d hit a pair of homeruns in Jupiter (one of them at 112 EV) as an underclassmen and collect double digit hits in BOTH WWBA events with a combined six jacks over the two tournaments. It was a summer that combined performance and winning on the biggest stages for Romero. It’s a quiet left-handed swing that packs a punch. He would reap the benefits of his performances, earning a commitment to LSU and jumping to the #74 prospect in...

There’s a lot of talent throughout this 2026 class, filled with the big-name stars, to talent that spreads across the nation. It’s been a lot of fun seeing these prospects grow and develop over the years, from the days of watching some of these guys at the 13/14u days at events on the circuit, to now where they are all graduating seniors in 2026. There’s been new faces who have popped along the way over the years, even in 2026, where some players who were relatively undiscovered, have come out and made a name for themselves with a statement performance. Between the familiar and the new, there’s a lot of names on this list that are going to be quite regularly talked about on the circuit, and for good reason.  Whether it’s PG All-Americans or not, there’s a lot of names with superstar potential at the next level. We’ve got 14 PG All-Americans...

Finest in the Field: Class of 2026 | Class of 2027 | Class of 2028 These guys might just be entering high school, but they've certainly already made a name for themselves on the national circuit, especially with their abilities on the defensive side of things.  C: Xavier Rodriguez (Logansville, GA) Rodriguez is a polished defender with real arm strength behind the dish, while showcasing the ability to impact the baseball with authority to all fields evident by thirty of his sixty-five hits going for extra-bases including seven bombs. He handles high-level pitching extremely well, commands his staff and his offensive prowess makes him a true two-way asset. 1B: Cooper Knight (Buda, TX) Knight is a smooth operator at first base with plenty of range, fluidity and agility in his footwork around the bag. Best Game I Saw: The Dream NTL 18U vs. MBA Scout Team Murphy Jupiter always brings out the best, and we got fireworks from the jump. Turner Marshall gave The Dream an outstanding 4+ innings of work on the mound, holding a lethal MBA team at bay with Chance Dixon, Derrick Carter, and Ellis Appling providing an offensive spark out of the gate for the Georgia based boys. However, it was only a matter of time before the talent on the other side got going, as MBA erased a 3-run deficit in the 5th to take a 4-3 lead led by a Parker Loew HR. The Dream then took command again in the Top of the 6th, before MBA punched right back with a huge 5-run inning in the bottom half capped off by a clutch RBI single from Matthew Kerrigan, ending a wild sequence with tons of notable performances from two very competitive rosters. Best Tournament Performance I Saw: Surely someone has already brought this...

Nebraska Cornhuskers 2025 Highlights: The Cornhuskers were a difficult team to figure in ’25 as they finished with 33 wins, played just .500 (15-15) in the Big Ten but had some big wins at various times during the season and got hot at the right time. They knocked off then #16 Vanderbilt in the second game of the year, beat #5 Oregon State 2-out-of-3 at home in late March and then got hot at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha to win the Big Ten Tournament. They beat Michigan State in a 10-inning thriller before taking care of #4 Oregon, knocking off Penn State and then shutout #13 UCLA to punch their ticket to the Chapel Hill Regional. Head coach Will Bolt has now led his alma mater to three conference titles and three NCAA Regional appearances during his six years in Lincoln. No different than when he was a player, Bolt’s teams play with passion and toughness, this was never more...

Finest in the Field: Class of 2026 | Class of 2027 You like athletes? You like defenders who can impact a game at any given point? Look not further than this class as it's loaded from coast-to-coast with elite defenders all over the diamond.  C: Brogan Witcher, Bakersfield, CA Our scouting staff got several strong looks at Witcher whether that was at the Summer Kickoff, Sophomore National or the Underclass All American Games where he showcased his strong overall skillset and especially his advanced ability behind the plate. His 6-foot-3,180 pound build looks like one that will fill in quite nicely and be that big and physical catcher’s frame. His arm talent is undeniable where he gets it out quick and runs it up to 79 mph on throwdowns to 2nd (1.84 pop). Besides the standout catch/throw ability, we’ve seen him frame/receive strong arms and block it well during...

BURLINGTON, IA - 2025 Perfect Game Softball Toys 4 Tots Fundraiser One Day, December 7, 2025. Kicking off the holiday season, six teams participated in this one day, 3 game guarantee tournament in the 18u Division. We would like to thank those that donated a toy, and know that they will be distributed to area underprivileged children through a local charity organization. Following are some of the top performers from the weekend. Earning Tournament MV-Pitcher was Jolee Strohmeyer (2026 Dubuque, IA), a RHP/UTIL with tournament champion Lady Expos Blue. Strohmeyer shows hitters a consistent and repeatable motion and delivery with good use of the legs in the drive phase, and a quick and aggressive arm whip. Working with a six pitch mix of fastball, change-up, rise, drop, curve and screw, Strohmeyer topped out at 60 mph, and showed good movement  as she worked her rise and curve just out...
