College Notebook: December 12

Nebraska Cornhuskers

2025 Highlights: The Cornhuskers were a difficult team to figure in ’25 as they finished with 33 wins, played just .500 (15-15) in the Big Ten but had some big wins at various times during the season and got hot at the right time. They knocked off then #16 Vanderbilt in the second game of the year, beat #5 Oregon State 2-out-of-3 at home in late March and then got hot at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha to win the Big Ten Tournament. They beat Michigan State in a 10-inning thriller before taking care of #4 Oregon, knocking off Penn State and then shutout #13 UCLA to punch their ticket to the Chapel Hill Regional. Head coach Will Bolt has now led his alma mater to three conference titles and three NCAA Regional appearances during his six years in Lincoln. No different than when he was a player, Bolt’s teams play with passion and toughness, this was never more evident than the way they finished their season last year.

Impact Returners:

· Junior Case Sanderson (.307/.417/.416, 9 doubles, 3 HR, 31 RBI) elite defender who has added physicality and is showing an uptick in power at the dish

· Senior Josh Overbeek (.293/.483/.377, 13 doubles, 6 HR, 28 RBI) two-year starter, team leader, switch hitter with power from both sides of the plate

· Senior Dylan Carey (.288/.486/.377, 20 doubles, 8 HR, 41 RBI) three-year starter, excellent defender up the middle, doubles machine

· Sophomore Devin Nunez (.331/.496/.406, 6 doubles, 5 HR, 22 RBI) led the team in hitting as true freshman, slashing type player with complete skillset

· Junior Max Buettenback (.286/.532/.383, 8 doubles, 7 HR, 27 RBI) lefthanded hitter with emerging power, adds depth to lineup and primed for big season

· Junior Ty Horn (4.94, 4-4, 17 starts, 85.2 IP, 76:32 K:BB) experienced veteran arm with power stuff, fastball 92-94 up to 96 mph with SL/CB/CH combo

· Sophomore Carson Jasa (8.68, 2-2, 11 appearances, 18.2 IP, 24:19 K:BB) some of the best pure stuff in the country, fastball 95-97 touching 98 mph with CT/SL/CH

· Sophomore Gavin Blachowicz (3.80, 3-0, 17 appearances, 21.1 IP, 22:14 K:BB) will move into the rotation, coming off excellent freshman year, FB up to 94 with CT/SL

Intriguing Newcomers:

· Freshman RHP Jace Ziola has huge upside with monster arm strength, has already been up to 96 mph with advanced ability to spin the ball, work ethic to match

· Washburn transfer Senior Jett Buck (.365/.757/.421, 18 doubles, 21 HR, 68 RBI) adds an explosive bat to the middle of the lineup, should make major impact

· Senior Southern Indiana transfer Cole Kitchens (.371/.624/.420, 18 doubles, 12 HR, 60 RBI) adds another power threat to the lineup, proven run producer

· Miami of Ohio transfer Cooper Katskee (3.08, 11-2, 16 app, 10 starts, 84.2 IP, 70:30 K:BB) All-American RHP, low-90s heater with a quality 3-pitch off-speed mix

· Mississippi State transfer Kevin Mannell (4.30, 2-0, 11 app, 14.2 IP, 19:5 K:BB) should be the closer with lower-slot release, fastball 90-93 with sweeper, slider and change

2026 Outlook: Will Bolt has a nice core of experienced position players as well as arms that experienced the postseason last year. While the returning hitters are battle tested, the addition of some thump to the lineup through the portal could take this team to the next level. If a few of the transfers duplicate their production at the D2 level, they could be a scary offensive club to deal with. Just as important, however, is the fact that they return veteran arms that were in the rotation. This staff should have length and plenty of power stuff to navigate the weekend series and the Big Ten gauntlet. On paper, this club looks every bit as good as last year’s NCAA Tournament team and if these portal additions pay off, they should be another championship contender in 2026.

Oregon Ducks

2025 Highlights: The Mark Wasikowski era continues to take the program where it has never been before and 2025 was particularly groundbreaking, as the Ducks won its first regular season league title in more than half a century. Accumulating 42 wins over the season, including 22 victories in Big Ten Conference play, Oregon put together a top 20 RPI. Due to their regular season resume, they hosted the first round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the first time in program history that they reached the postseason five years in a row. Their roster was one of the most physically imposing in the country and their offense could bludgeon opposing pitching staffs. They averaged 8 runs per game, batting .295 as a team with 103 doubles and 115 home runs all told. Being the #12 national seed, their season would ultimately end in controversy and disappointment losing to Utah Valley and Cal Poly at home.

Impact Returners:

· Senior Ian Umlandt (2.55, 6-2, 18 app, 60.0 IP, 44:16, K:BB) LHP with big time experience and moxie, can fill multiple roles and blend pitches with the best of them

· Senior Dominic Hellman (.326/.567/.426, 6 doubles, 13 HR, 44 RBI) imposing frame at 6-6/250, light tower power, healthy and in position to have a career year

· Senior Drew Smith (.313/.487/.423, 3 doubles, 5 HR, 25 RBI) reliable defender who can play a corner in both the infield and outfield, cornerstone type guy

· Junior Maddox Molony (.309/.565/.403, 8 doubles, 15 HR, 45 RBI, 10 SB) physical middle infielder at 6-3/220, big time juice from the right side, fundamental defender

· Junior Ryan Cooney (.335/.500/.445, 12 doubles, 6 HR, 49 RBI, 15 SB) battled injuries last season but still produced in big way, complete skillset across all aspects of game

· Sophomore Burke-Lee Mabeus (.257/.376/.379, 5 doubles, 2 HR, 23 RBI) switch-hitting catcher, much improved offensively, elite toolset behind the dish

· Sophomore Will Sanford (6.39, 2-2, 10 starts, 38.0 IP, 42:39 K:BB) big time arm talent, has refined delivery and command, fastball 91-94 touching 95 mph with power SL

Intriguing Newcomers:

· Northern Kentucky transfer Gabe Miranda (.254/.458/.397, 2 doubles, 2 HR, 15 RBI) lefthanded 6-3/215 hitter with the approach to have a big season

· Freshman Brayden Jaska is a 6-6/210 catcher with the athletic ability to stick behind the dish, plus power and plus arm strength, could be an impact very early in career

· Freshman Angel Laya is a strong and projectable lefthanded hitter that profiles as a middle of the order bat long-term,6.6 runner, plus arm strength

· Senior NAIA Azusa Pacific transfer Elijah Cook (.364/.545/.417) was limited in playing time a year ago but possesses true centerfielder skill traits

· Senior Josh Schleichardt (.305/.603/.411, 18 doubles, 10 HR, 34 RBI, 18 SB) transfers in from D2 Vanguard will be an offensive power threat and corner defender

· San Diego transfer Cal Scolari (3.89, 6-3, 16 starts, 76.1 IP, 83:39 K:BB) will be a sophomore who could push into the rotation, fastball in the mid-90s with 4-pitch mix

· Gonzaga transfer Miles Gosztola (6.40, 5-8, 15 starts, 77.1 IP, 74:30 K:BB) is a junior LHP with a low-90s heater and out pitch slider, could fill multiple roles on the staff

· Devin Bell (2.39, 6-3, 11 starts, 75.1 IP, 77:25 K:BB) is a senior transfer from Western Oregon, 46 career appearances, pitchability righty with mid-90s fastball

2026 Outlook: Waz loves to stack his teams with physicality, power and athleticism. There may not be a roster in the country that will look better getting off the bus than the Ducks in 2026. A scary thought for opponents is that this version of the Oregon offense may have more juice than a year ago. There was quite a bit of turnover on the pitching staff that sported a 4.10 ERA and a better than 2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in ’25. It looks like they did what they needed to do in the transfer portal to put them back in a good place on the bump once again. There is really no weakness to this club, it just remains to be seen if Waz and staff can mold the pieces into one of the best clubs in the nation. It’s not a question of whether the Ducks will be competing to win the Big Ten, or even if they will host another NCAA Regional. The real question is does this club have the intangibles to finally deliver a trip to Omaha.

With a postseason run for the ages, the Oklahoma Sooners (43-23) took home the National Championship and naturally finish the 2026 season as our No. 1 team in the land.  It is the third national title for the Sooners, playing in their 12th CWS and making their fourth championship series appearance.  They add to previous national titles won in 1951 and 1994 and did it by taking the most difficult path of any team in this year’s tournament.  In the NCAA Tournament, Oklahoma took down national seeds, No. 2 Georgia Tech twice, No. 3 Georgia twice, No. 5 UNC twice, No. 7 Alabama and No. 15 Kansas twice.  This was the second time that head coach Skip Johnson has led the Sooners to the CWS Championship Series since 2022 and the first time he has taken home the crown.  The North Carolina Tarheels (54-14) was one win away from their first national title and finish...

He toed the rubber in round two of the playoffs, proceeding to toss six innings with eight punchouts and zero earned runs allowed. The 6-foot southpaw filled up all four quadrants of the strike zone, attacking hitters early and often with his fastball. The heater lived in the 88-91 mph range with heavy traits, often setting up his slurvy breaking ball. Bonnette showed good feel...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The uncommitted right-hander went three scoreless and was in the zone plenty, striking out two while not allowing a walk. Flames Capture 18U BCS Title

Alyssa Golden

Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament. “This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...
