Flames Capture 18U BCS Title

Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex.

Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament.



“This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.”

The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings.

NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander topped out at 90 mph and averaged 86 mph on his fastball, limiting the damage despite the Flames taking a 1-0 lead into the third after an RBI from Lonnie Campos in the first inning.

Left fielder Ryder Hodgkinson also helped NLB stay close, making an inning-ending double play in the first as he caught a fly ball before throwing out the runner at home to end the inning.

Collier started on the mound for the Flames, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out five in six innings. The top 1000-ranked right-hander worked consistently at 82-84 mph with his fastball and mixed in a 74-mph curveball to keep NLB hitters off balance throughout the afternoon.

Zachary Burch entered in relief for NLB during the top of the third and worked 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out one. The right-hander operated at 85-88 mph with his fastball.

The turning point of the game came in the third inning. Entering with a 1-0 lead, Logan Hawkins sparked a rally with an RBI double. His momentum-shifting hit was followed shortly after by two more runs, giving the Flames control with a 4-0 lead.

“I told them we’re not taking any pitches anymore,” coach Vasquez said. “We’re hunting fastballs. They weren’t scared to swing the bats this game. Colin [Raftery] stayed hot all tournament. He’s been our RBI machine at the plate.”

Raftery, who finished a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, earned tournament MVP honors.

However, Raftery said the award wasn’t what motivated him.

“I was just having fun,” he said. “I wasn’t really caring about all the stats or MVP. We just wanted to come out here, have fun and win.”

Collier carried that momentum to the mound, striking out four batters across the third and fourth innings.

Alex Goodwin recorded NLB’s first hit of the afternoon with a single in the fourth inning to get the first hit of the day for NLB. However, runs continued to be hard to come by as both the fourth and fifth innings remained scoreless.

The Flames added to their lead in the sixth, as Raftery sparked the offense with a single.

Jackson White kept the momentum rolling for the Flames with an RBI triple, allowing Acevedo, who finished 2-for-3 and stole two bases, to score.

Caleb Hoogewerf entered in relief for NLB in the sixth inning and finished out the game, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing one run and one walk.

Marcus Davila provided the spark NLB desperately needed in the bottom of the sixth, as he hit a home run to close the gap to 6-2. Davila led the NLB offense, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and a run scored.

Aiden Bonagura, Cal Crecelius and Raftery all singled in the seventh inning, with Raftery driving in another run to increase the Flames lead to 7-2.

After Collier exited, Ian Long took over and pitched one inning, allowing two hits and one walk and striking out two batters. He worked consistently in the 85-87 mph range.

A single by Jack Niles followed by an RBI double by Davila gave NLB some life. However, it wasn’t enough, as Long recorded a game-ending strikeout to secure the 7-3 victory.

Looking back on the championship run, Raftery said the team’s chemistry made the experience special.

“Everyone was having fun,” he said. “I’ll remember the last out of the game the most.”
