You like athletes? You like defenders who can impact a game at any given point? Look not further than this class as it's loaded from coast-to-coast with elite defenders all over the diamond. 

C: Brogan Witcher, Bakersfield, CA

Our scouting staff got several strong looks at Witcher whether that was at the Summer Kickoff, Sophomore National or the Underclass All American Games where he showcased his strong overall skillset and especially his advanced ability behind the plate. His 6-foot-3,180 pound build looks like one that will fill in quite nicely and be that big and physical catcher’s frame. His arm talent is undeniable where he gets it out quick and runs it up to 79 mph on throwdowns to 2nd (1.84 pop). Besides the standout catch/throw ability, we’ve seen him frame/receive strong arms and block it well during game action. #9 in ‘28 class.



1B: Keelan Zumwalt, Lee’s Summit, MO

Out of all the power hitting prospects at the spot, Zumwalt has stood out with polish ahead of his years defensively to match the innate feel to hit and budding power projection. As he fills an already large build we could see him take the next jump into one of the most prolific power sticks in the class. Expect big things in 2026 as he becomes signable at the end of the summer.

INF: Landon Bonner, The Colony, TX

Truly one of the more memorable summer appearances at 15U WWBA. Multiple homers and overall just an impossible out. Great athleticism present and difference making both on the bases and up the middle on the dirt. Swift, coordinated  mover with tons of twitch. His top 10 ranking that he earned this summer may not be the ceiling if he continues to grow.

INF: Kam Gillespie, Kansas City, MO

Gillespie was a consistent riser throughout the summer/fall which led him to becoming #30 player in the ‘28 class and a large reason for that is the belief our staff has in his ability on the dirt. It’s a wiry athletic frame where that athleticism shines on the basepaths but also defensively with his advanced footwork. His feet move to and through the baseball with smoothness and quickness. The glovework is just as impressive as the feet where his hands are soft and sure at reception with quick glove-to-hand with an accurate arm across. He pairs that glove with an elite bat making it one of the more advanced profiles in the class. 

INF: Jesse Covington, Greensboro, NC

Covington walked away a big winner out of sophomore national where his combination of athleticism and projection excited our staff. It’s a long and rangy build at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds that floats on the dirt, moving well to both sides and in with polished footwork. It’s also undeniable arm talent where he whips it across with looseness, ease and accuracy in the low 90s. Also performed quite well offensively in 2025 slashing .414/.544/.671. One of the highest upside prospects in the entire class.

OF: Joel Vargas, San Diego, CA

Joel has long been known for his advanced skills on both sides of the ball. It’s standout athleticism and it really shows in the outfield with the way he glides out there with free and easy athletic movements. He consistently takes efficient routes and angles to the baseball with quickness and sure-handed glove work. It’s also an accurate arm that has easy above avg. strength for his level. 

OF: Carter Shouse, Middletown, OH

Feel like a few years in a row now where Shouse has been near the top of the board. While Shouse possesses the athleticism that few in the class have, I think the big arm is also a significant factor in the overall defensive evaluation. Blend the pair and you have a top notch talent that is really only scratching the surface of the potential. Also, the potential for defensive versatility, grading out well at first base in his Sophomore National look.

OF: Rylan Jenkins, Tennile, GA

As are many of the top outfielders in the sport at any level, Jenkins' excellent sub 6.50 speed plays a factor in his closing ability in the gaps with innate feel to track. While the arm may not be towards the top of the class just yet the overall athleticism is hard to deny. Jenkins can handle the barrel offensively as well and was a standout offensive performer across the 48 AB Perfect Game sample in 2025.

UTL : Theo Swafford, Ventura, CA

Swafford has been a personal favorite of mine for about a year now. Since getting my first look at him last winter, all he’s done is proven himself to be one of the more well-rounded players in the class. A strong athlete with an advanced hit tool and an ability to play in the outfield and on the dirt exceptionally well. It’s a middle athlete profile where our scouting staff could see him playing either center or short at the next level. Could easily see him joining the long list of great high school shortstops to come out of Southern California. 

P: Dexter McCleon Jr., Suwanee, GA

While pitcher might be the most difficult to name in terms of a defensive standout, McCleon fits the bill probably for more than just pitcher. The highest level of athlete in this class and rightfully sitting atop them all. McCleon is still growing into a lean frame and possesses the arm strength and speed blend that is rarely reached by any, regardless of class. Special athlete and power stuff present as only a sophomore.

‘28 OF Jakob Groeschel (OH) continues to impress with the bat on the circuit, picked up 2 2Bs in the first game today. Really athletic, went 4.4 on turn; easy to dream on all the traits. #MLKEast @PG_OhioValley pic.twitter.com/wOIwnGKnkg — Perfect Game Florida (@Florida_PG) January 17, 2026 2028 OF Jakob Groeschel (Springfield, Ohio) broke out at this event last year hitting a casual .909, and although he didn’t turn in quite the same performance, he hit a strong .462 with 4 extra-base hits, 5 walks, 5 bags and only struck out once. He’s a pretty dynamic athlete who can do a lot of things well, but the bat is the calling card as he just lives on the barrel and has no problem handling all kinds of pitching. In every major sport, the championship is decided in the postseason. You can lose games all year, get hot at the right time, and walk away with the hardware. The regular season is a rehearsal. The playoffs are the show.  The championship belt changes that. Borrowed from professional wrestling, boxing and ultimate fighting, the belt travels the moment the holder loses — no brackets, no seeding, no second chances. A random Tuesday non-conference game in Milledgeville, Georgia  becomes a title fight. A spring trip to Florida becomes a gauntlet. The defending national champion can lose the belt before February is over.  We’re tracking three belts this season — NCAA Division II, NAIA, and NCAA Division III — each starting with the defending national champion. We have another update to the National Top-50 after two weeks of even more games being played in the southern states along with seasons just starting to kick off across the country. We’re quickly approaching another stellar high school event, the NHSI in Cary, and with that will come even more movement in these rankings. St. John Bosco (CA) continues to hold firm at the No. 1 position after a 4-0 start to their season. Venice (FL) has been rolling throughout the early portion of the year and jumps up to No. 2 in the country. One of the biggest movers in this update is The Bennett School (TX) jumping from unranked to No. 8 in the country after beating a handful of top ranked programs to start the year. March 17th Perfect Game/Player of the Week: Vahn Lackey, C, Georgia Tech The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (17-3) came into the season with the highest external expectations in decades based on the anticipation of their offensive potential. To this point they have not only met those lofty expectations, but twenty games in they may have exceeded them. While there are plenty of high-level prospects up and down the lineup, with all that star power Vahn Lackey has stood out. Sure to be one of the first catchers selected in this year’s MLB Draft with his comprehensive skillset, he projects well as an everyday backstop at the next level.
