Finest in the Field: Class of 2026

The Class of 2026 is one of the deeper prep classes that we have seen in a couple of years. With that being said, there is plenty of talent on the defensive side. Let’s take a look at some of the best defenders in the class. 

C: Will Brick, Christian Brothers HS (Memphis, TN)

Brick is a newcomer to the class after reclassifying, but immediately became the top backstop. Extremely advanced actions are shown behind the dish with impressive athleticism to go with it. Brick showcases big time arm strength and is consistently accurate on throw downs. He can make playing the position look extremely easy at times. Brick possesses all the defensive tools needed to be a premier catcher. 



1B: AJ Curry, University City HS (San Diego, CA)

Curry has a bigger and stronger frame with good strength throughout. He has a well-proportioned build that serves him well on the dirt. He’s able to move about well, getting it done around the bag, being able to field his spot well, and also make good feeds to second base on double plays, when necessary. He’s got the glove for the spot, being able to scoop the ball and pick up outs for his team defensively when called upon. 

IF: Jacob Lombard, Gulliver Schools (Miami, FL)

Lombard is one of the most athletic position players in the class, with the speed, agility, and footwork to get it done on the dirt. He put together one of the smoothest rounds at PG National this past summer and has shown his ability to move about the position at shortstop over the years on the circuit. He moves well laterally, with a good feel for the angles, and plenty of feel to keep throws across the diamond working accurately and through the first baseman’s chest. He’s one of the premier defenders in this class. 

IF: Aiden Ruiz, The Stony Brook (Queens, NY) 

Ruiz is about as advanced as a glove as you can get from a prep shortstop. Advanced footwork allows for premier range up the middle. Ridiculously smooth glove actions making catching ground balls look effortless. A smooth, quick transfer allows Ruiz to get rid of it and produce strong, accurate throws. Ruiz exudes confidence on the dirt and is as good of a glove as we’ve seen from a prep in a while. 

IF: Grady Emerson, Fort Worth Christian HS (Argyle, TX) 

Emerson is a textbook defender. He has some of the soundest hands, posture and instincts to stick at short. He’s a great lateral mover in space with an on-time arm action. His ability to slow his process down and make the everyday play is advanced. There is room for growth with his defensive potential, as Emerson can flash the leather and drop the slot when needed.

OF: Noah Wilson, McCallie School (Ooltewah, TN)

Wilson has the closing speed to play all three in the grass, though it projects best in center field. He’s a tremendous athlete with double-plus run times and has a knack for closing a gap. He’s shown a high defensive acumen all year long on the circuit. 

OF: Brady Harris, Trinity Christian Academy (St. Augustine, FL)

Harris is a blend of smooth and explosive defensively. He uses twitchy athleticism to go and get it center field. The Florida commit possesses plus speed and a high motor, allowing him to cover significant ground into both gaps. He can make highlight-reel plays and be a significant impact defensively in the middle of the diamond. 

OF: Anthony Murphy, Corona HS (Corona, CA)

Murphy has a versatile blend of speed, agility, and strength that shows in the outfield. He runs a 6.54 60-yard dash and flashes some speed when he gets moving, looking to run balls down in the gap. If you pair that with his arm strength, throwing 96 mph from the outfield, it’s a really impressive blend that makes him one of the premier defenders in the class. 

UTL: Rookie Shepard, Faith Lutheran HS (North Las Vegas, NV)

A defender as versatile and smooth as Shepard slots perfectly into our utility spot. He has buttery hands up the middle with good range at both the six and four, but his experience behind the plate at catcher also shows with his nimble ability out of the crouch. He fits multiple roles on the dirt. 

P: Gio Rojas, Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS (Coral Springs, FL)

Rojas is the premier arm in the class, known for his absurd stuff on the bump, but his athleticism stands out as well. Rojas moves effortlessly down the mound. He is both efficient and fluid with this delivery and actions. He has shown two-way skills as a prep and that shows in his defensive ability on the bump.

‘28 OF Jakob Groeschel (OH) continues to impress with the bat on the circuit, picked up 2 2Bs in the first game today. Really athletic, went 4.4 on turn; easy to dream on all the traits. #MLKEast @PG_OhioValley pic.twitter.com/wOIwnGKnkg — Perfect Game Florida (@Florida_PG) January 17, 2026 2028 OF Jakob Groeschel (Springfield, Ohio) broke out at this event last year hitting a casual .909, and although he didn’t turn in quite the same performance, he hit a strong .462 with 4 extra-base hits, 5 walks, 5 bags and only struck out once. He’s a pretty dynamic athlete who can do a lot of things well, but the bat is the calling card as he just lives on the barrel and has no problem handling all kinds of pitching. The start of another high school season is right around the corner in a handful of states and with that, as always, comes our Preseason High School Top-50. A whopping twenty states are represented in the initial Top-50, a number that is staggering when you look at the amount of depth some of these rosters have across the nation. Leading the group is St. John Bosco (CA), a team that brought home a CIF Southern D1 title in 2025 and bring back a strong group of seniors to look to repeat. Stoneman Douglas (FL) is a name most people should know by now in the high school ranks and comes in as our preseason #2 team, looking to win their sixth straight state championship in Florida. Orange Lutheran (CA) had a good case for preseason #1 but come it an No. 3, bringing a roster with seven seniors ranked inside the top-200 in the country to the table. BURLINGTON, IA - Perfect Game Softball Burst The Bubble Tournament, January 24 - 25, 2026. 15 teams in  this four game guarantee, pool into bracket play tournament, with both a 16u and 18u division contested. In the 16u Division, it was the 09 Midwest Sluggers claiming the Championship over finalist Wisconsin Heat. In the 18u Division it was CIK 08’s taking home the gold rings over finalist Alliance Select Black. The tournament was filled with lots of young talent with big bats, and several players already committed to higher education programs. Perfect Game Winter Blow-Out 18U Division Burlington, Iowa Jan 17-18, 2026   BURLINGTON, IOWA- The 2026 Perfect Game Winter Blowout, held in the Fun City Turf bubble was competitive from start to finish. Seven teams from three states converged to sharpen their skills and compete for the title. In the end, the Iowa Dynamite 18U took home the hardware, defeating the Alliance Select Harper in the finale. There were some very strong performances on both sides of the ball and below we highlight the top performers from the weekend.     Payton Harris (2028, Mediapolis, IA) of the Black Dragons was lights out on the weekend, batting an impressive .733.  She led the entire tournament in hits, 11 in total showing she was one of the most formidable hitters in her class.
