2017 West Coast Top Prospect Showcase

Sean Power (2018 OF, Thousand Oaks, CA) showcased his athleticism making an excellent diving catch in CF on a ball with top spin dying in front of him. An inning later, Power squared up a fastball, exploding through the ball for a homerun to right center.

Eric Padilla (2018 RHP, Santa Ana, CA) was impressive from his submarine slot on the mound, touching 80 with good arm side life. He pounded the lower part of the zone, commanding both glove side and arm side with purpose.

Ryuga Hatashima (2018 RHP, Fukuoka, FO) was impressive at the plate in his outing, getting on top of a ball nicely for a loud line drive up the middle for a single. Aggressive on the base paths, he takes a very big lead but showed instincts, later stealing a bag with an excellent initial step.

Michael Bennin (2018 C, Murrieta, CA) had one of the harder hit balls of the game, barreling a line drive to deep left field for a double. He did this by showing quick hands on an inside fastball, generating power through the lower half.

Tyler Williamson (2018 MIF, Las Vegas, NV) was up to 82 MPH on the mound today, pounding the strike zone with all pitches. He pitched off of a curveball that flashed good downward tilt with tight spin and shape.  

David Covarrubias (2018 OF, La Habra, CA) is a southpaw that was up to 82 MPH with cut on his fastball. Features a delivery strictly from the stretch, quick arm with a 12 to 6 curveball that he showed some feel for.

Gage Edwards (2018 RHP, Draper, UT) came out of the Green team and showed a fast arm immediately, running his fastball up to 87 mph a handful of times while sitting comfortably in the 84-86 mph range. Uncommitted, Edwards showed a feel for two off speed pitches and went to his changeup on a 3-2 count even, throwing the pitch for a strike with fading life at 77 mph.

Tyresse Turner (2019 SS, La Palma, CA)put his speed on display in his first at-bat, putting the pressure on the defensive with a ground ball to shortstop. Beating it out, Turner then stole second and third base with relative ease before coming around to plate the first run of the game for the Maroon team.

Mario Vargas (2018 RHP, San Bruno, CA) took the mound for the Maroon team and impressed during his time on the bump, running his fastball up to 85 mph with steady running life and a quick right arm. He spun a tight slider in the mid- to upper-70s with tight rotation and showed depth on his curveball at 72,, throwing both for strikes.

Shun Morita (2018 1B, Osaka, OS) brought some of the biggest energy and excitement to the ballpark that we’ve seen all showcase season and has the skill to match, lining a hard single through the six-hole before stealing a bag and scoring a run.

Ryu Umeda (2018 RHP, Minato, TK) closed things out for the Green team, running his fastball up to 83 mph with a balanced set of mechanics. When he worked down in the zone he was able to create short life to his fastball and shows comfort in throwing his curveball, adding and subtracting velocity to it.

Joshua Keating (2019 1B, San Antonio, TX) made the play of the game over at third base on a ground to his backhand, sliding to his left before popping to his feet and throwing across the diamond to get the runner by a step.

Kalani Klepfer (2018 SS, Maricopa, AZ) showed quick rotational power and strength in his swing. He creates backspin carry with some natural loft in his swing path and shows present pop in the bat.

Jack Straza (2018 RHP, Rancho Santa Fe, CA) was short to the ball with quick hands. Has some feel for barreling the ball consistently with some power to the pull side of the field.

Matthew Brumbaugh (2018 C, Chula Vista, CA) shows some physical strength and power with the bat. His swing is quick and generates lift. Punished balls on a line throughout the outfield consistently.

Bradley Harris (2018 1B, Alpine, CA) has quick hands and generates loud contact when squared in the barrel. Ball jumps well.

Josh Mollerus (2018 RHP, Campbell, CA) put on a show in BP with consistently hard contact in the barrel of the bat. Drove the ball on a line to all fields and also showed pull side homerun power with backspin and carry. Quick bat with leverage in the swing.

Sean Power (2018 OF, Thousand Oaks, CA) shows good balance at the plate with some barrel tilt and the ball jumps off the barrel to the pull side.

Braden Winget (2018 1B, Draper, UT) uses his large physical frame to generate power and hard line drive contact from line to line. Consistently drives the ball with hard barrel contact and the ball jumps off his bat. With more lift in his swing he will generate plenty of home run power.

Caiden Matheny (2019 SS, Murrieta, CA) shows his high level athletic ability in his swing. Uses his body well to generate power with the bat and shows quick hands and bat speed. Consistent barrel contact and the ball really jumps off the barrel.

Julian Mungarro (2018 C, Torrance, CA) showed quick hands with leverage to the pull side with home run power to the pull side.

Jun Park (2018 OF, Davis, CA) physical with a compact swing and bat speed. Barreled up everything with backspin and carry. Powered balls out of the park to left and right-center field with easy effort. Present power is impressive and he can consistently drive the ball.

Tyresse Turner (2019 SS, La Palma, CA) continued to impress with his BP session from the left side with a loose and quick swing that has some bat speed and pull side pop.

Benjamin Terry (2018 OF, Santa Monica, CA) showed ability to pull his hands in on a fastball deep in on his hands. Hit a loud barrel to deep left center, showing quick hands and bat speed for a RBI standup double.

Ryusei Hando (2018 IF, Sanda, HG) shows good, mature actions at shortstop. Made a number of plays with ease, in particular a charge play – smooth and quick with the feet, good expedited transfer to get his man at first. Also showed a solid approach at the plate, staying squared and back well on a breaking ball for a line drive to the left side.

Ryan Lamastra (2019 MIF, Corona, CA) is a 5'8", 149-pound primary middle infielder who impressed with his stuff on the mound in his outing this afternoon. Up to 79 MPH, he had a quick arm and featured a moving fastball to his arm side with a tight spinning curveball with depth that he showed feel for.

Kento Saiki (2018 1B, Yokohama, KN) features a deep arm action around back, pounding hitters with a heavier fastball that touched 81 MPH. He shows some tempo and works off a 12 to 6 curveball and mixes in a changeup as well.

Ryuga Hatashima (2018 RHP, Fukuoka, FO) Played solid defense in the workout an in the games. High energy all the time and has quick soft hands.

Max Soria (2018 RHP, Sunnyvale, CA) pitched 3 scoreless innings with 1 strikeout. Pitches from a 3/4 slot, and arm works well. Fastball topped at 83mph and he throws 3 pitches for strikes.

Jake Mayers (2018 RHP, San Diego , CA) pitched 3 no hit innings with 5 k's. His fastball topped at 79mph with good cut action. He has good command of 3 pitches.

Julian Mungarro (2018 C, Torrance, CA) hit a long double of the top of the left field fence. He has present strength in swing. He makes consistent barrel contact.

Tyresse Turner (2019 SS, La Palma, CA) had an RBI triple to the left center field gap. Good quick twitch actions. Plays fast and puts pressure on the defense. All around solid prospect.

Zach Zdimal (2018 RHP, Scottsdale, AZ) pitched 3 solid innings striking out 3. He repeats his delivery well, and has command of 3 pitches. His CB shows good depth. Fastball has life topping at 87mph.

Kanta Kondo (2018 LHP, Aichi-Gun, AI) Had a hard double to the right field corner. Makes solid contact with a pull approach. 

Shun Morita (2018 1B, Osaka, OS) had a big solo home run to left. He also added a single and scored twice. He has a quick bat and makes consistent solid contact.

Jun Park (2018 OF, Davis, CA) went 2-2 with 2 hard doubles to left field and scored twice. He makes very solid barrel contact with a quick bat.

Jared Schatz (2018 OF, Agoura Hills, CA) went 2-2 with 2 hard line drives and 2 RBI's. He is very quick to the ball with good bat speed.

Maimu Kobayashi (2018 RHP, Nagoya, AI) had 2 of the 3 total hits for Green team with 2 singles. Makes solid contact to all fields and has a quick bat.

Ethan Brodsky (2018 RHP, Mission Viejo, CA) pitched 3 scoreless innings giving up only 2 hits and striking out 3. His FB topped at 86mph with life, and he has command of 3 pitches.

Masahiro Ito (2018 RHP, Ichinomiya, AI) struck out 5 in 3 innings of work giving up only 1 hit. He showed good arm strength with a fastball at 86mph. He has a big breaking ball that gets good depth.

Kalani Klepfer (2018 SS, Maricopa, AZ) went 2-3 with 2 singles and an RBI.

Conor Shaughnessy (2018 LHP, San Diego, CA) laced a double to right center field in the 1st game today. He makes solid contact to all fields

Benjamin Terry (2018 OF, Santa Monica, CA) had a line drive double down the left field line and also scored a run. 

Josh Mollerus (2018 RHP, Campbell, CA) pitched 3 innings today giving up 2 hits, and striking out a pair. Has has a compact arm action amd repeats delivery. His fastball toped at 84 with good armside run.

Daniel Genna (2018 C, West Covina, CA) stood out today defensively. Has a strong, accurate arm, and quick actions. Quick feet allows above average blocking skills.

Caiden Matheny (2019 SS, Murrieta, CA) had a double to the right center field gap and scored a run in the 1st game today. He makes consistent solid contact to all fields.

Joseph Rush (2018 OF, Las Vegas, NV) was 2-2 in the 1st game with a couple hard hit balls. He made solid barrel contact all day.
