Batting Practice Highlights Teams 16-18

5/21/2023

Everett Flanegan (2027 MIF, Concord, CA) showed one of the simpler swings of the day. It’s a no stride trigger with hands that stay neutral throughout the load. There’s minimal moving parts which allows for balance and the barrel works quick, on a flat path, and with a high finish. Was consistently on barrel the entire round.

Tyler Vladic (2027 OF, Cypress, CA) exhibited a future power LH stroke during his BP. Sits in a wider base and uses a simple toe tap trigger. Flashed some snappy movements with his lower half that turned quick. Barrel slotted early in the zone that showed both quickness and extension through the zone.

Lukas Waite (2027 OF, San Diego, CA) impressed on the mound on Saturday and in BP on Sunday. It's a simple/balanced load. The swing is compact that has some length through it post impact. He barreled several balls throughout his round but had some of the best contact of the day on some of his deep fly balls that landed just shy of the left-center field track.

Scott Fritz (2028 1B, Hawthorne, CA) is a high-upside power-hitting ’28. It’s a direct bat path with a level finish that showed advanced bat speed. He swung it with pull-side intent to do damage and succeeded blasting several to the right-field wall.

Owen Digenan (2027 SS, Poway, CA) was on barrel the majority of his round. Keeps it quiet and simple with his load and flashed some hand/barrel quickness through the zone that work direct to the baseball. He pounded the left-center gap with line drives during his round.

Jake Dutcher (2028 OF, Seal Beach, CA) has a unique stance and swing that showed promise. Sets up in a taller open stance with active feet. Hands slot down and in a quality launch position to work uphill to the baseball. He has good extension post-impact with a high barrel finish where several of his barreled balls were in the air.

Austin Junk (2028 C, Redondo Beach, CA) displayed a simple rhythmic swing. Starting relaxed and narrow his hands load loose and in sync with his lower half while throwing the barrel with some above. average quickness for a ’28. Showed a middle approach and was consistently on-time and on-barrel.

Jordan Kurz (2027 SS, Ladera Ranch, CA) had a calm/confident demeanor in the box. Uses a controlled leg lift trigger that loaded early and got down on time. Barrel worked direct through the zone with a high one-hand high finish allowing for good extension. Produced several deep fly balls to the left-center gap during his round.

Elijah Kwon (2027 OF, Stevenson Ranch, CA) exhibited advanced barrel awareness during his round being on-barrel for almost every ball during his round. Has a simple controlled load with his lower half and his lower set hands enter the zone on a clean uphill bat path with advanced barrel quickness. He peppered the right-center gap with line-drives but also mixed in a few opposite field barrels as well.

Dayne Williams (2027 C, Clovis, CA) has some advanced physicality for a ’27 and showed that in the box during BP. Sits in a balanced stance where he has a rhythmic lower half trigger that gets him landed on time and being able turn the lower half with quickness. He has this high elbow load that gets the barrel a bit vertical and at times tippy but his hand strength and bat speed got him out front and on barrel for loud impact out front where he was able to work both gaps with line drives.

Aden Manning (2027 1B, Bakersfield, CA) has one of those swings where he trusts his hands to get the barrel to where it needs to be. There’s a nice rhythm to his hands that works in sync with his toe tap load. There’s easy balance throughout the load and swing. The barrel worked tight/connected to the body flashing some quickness and delivered line-drives to the middle of the field in both BP and in-game.

Batting Practice Highlights Teams 12-15

5/21/2023

Gavin Hamilton (2027 OF, Chandler, AZ), the 6-0/165 OF had a solid round of BP where he pounded the left-center gap consistently with barrels. His foot gets down early where he creates quality separation from a strong lower half showing some above avg. bat speed.

Kye Leenders (2027 LHP, Tigard, OR) showed strong hands that delivered a direct barrel with intent to catch it out front. The majority of batted balls during his round were pull-side line drives. His frame/build should project for some future power.

Grayson Thomas (2028 RHP, Manhattan Beach, CA) flashed quick hands during his BP. It’s a flat barrel path that works with good extension post impact. Showed some natural ability to loft to the pull-side.

Ryan Gonzalez (2027 1B, Glendora, CA) exhibited hitter-ish qualities. Uses a simple load with his hands and lower half that gets him to launch with ease. Bat works on a clean/uphill path through the zone and balls came off with back-spin/carry. There was obvious intent to hit the ball hard with authority while maintaining balance and staying behind it.

Joaquin Covarrubias (2027 OF, Upland, CA) showed a smooth LH stroke. He's relaxed in his stance standing slightly open and narrow with a controlled load. There's quality lift to the swing while working the whole field in his round. Stays balanced throughout the swing and turns quick.

Austin Gerken (2027 C, Orange, CA) arguably put on the best power display during his round with a violent swing. Present rhythm to the load getting him consistently on-time where he his hands showed some whippiness delivering the barrel. It's advanced bat speed and power for his age where he launched balls to the left field wall throughout his round.

Kona Bainum (2027 OF, Beverly Hills, CA) flashed some serious power potential during his round. The 6-2/155lb OF has a smaller hand/barrel load with a simple trigger lower half trigger. Barrel works down and through with quality extension through impact which produced several hard line-drive barrels.

Camden Nishnick (2027 1B, San Diego, CA) shows the ingredients of a future power RH bat. He turns his 6-3/175 build fast in his swing while maintaining balance and creating leverage with his lower half. It's a quick compact swing with a high barrel finish. Produced several line drives to the left center gap. There's a violent effort to the swing that allowed him to easily show off some advanced bat speed.

Ozzie Ortiz (2027 SS, Yuma, AZ) got off some simple/repeatable swings during his BP. Sits in a narrow stance with loose hands. Drifty at times but hands showed quickness especially on barrels out front where balls came off with natural loft to the pull-side.

Jackson Casey (2027 3B, Newport Beach, CA) had an inconsistent barrel round but when he was on-time it was loud. Impact was out front his entire round including some hard hit line-drives to the pull-side. Looks like a body that will really eventually really impact the baseball.

Aiden Sun (2027 3B, San Diego, CA) had a barrel filled round during his BP. Swing showed easy rhythm with a barrel that works on a flat path with some strength through impact. He stays behind it well with quality use of his lower half and worked the middle of the field.

Koa Dickinson's (2027 C, San Diego, CA) swing showed some rawness but there was no denying the power he flashed. He has present strength in the the hands that work down and through with good extension. There was intent to do damage out front with a pull-side approach while also showing an ability to lift where he sent several near the right field warning track.

17-Orange vs 18-Purple Game Highlights

5/21/2023

Jordan Kurz (2027 SS, Ladera Ranch, CA) went two solid shutout innings for Team Orange. He showed an easy/repeatable delivery where he uses a compact arm action that has some present armspeed to release. His FB worked up to 80 exhibiting some natural cutting action and mixed in a depthy SL at 69-71 that induced whiff. He also added a line-drive single at the plate.

Aden Manning (2027 1B, Bakersfield, CA) went two shutout innings for Team Purple and struck out four. His FB worked up to 78 and paired it with a sharp breaking ball he was able to control in-zone for strikes and as a chase pitch for whiffs. Manning also showed out at the plate collecting three hits.

Elijah Kwon (2027 OF, Stevenson Ranch, CA) had a standout BP and took that same swing into gameplay for Team Orange where he caught three barrels which included a 2-RBI double into the right-center gap. He also went two shutout innings on the mound where he ran his FB up to 78 and mixed in a quality mid-60s breaking ball.

Jake Dutcher (2028 OF, Seal Beach, CA) showed an advanced ability to lift the ball in the air in his BP round and was able to bring that into gameplay with a booming 2B to the LF wall that scored a run for Team Orange.

John Sullivan (2027 1B, Riverside, CA) showed a smooth stroke from the left side in BP and took that same swing in-game for a sac-fly and an LD single to right for Team Orange.

5/20/2023

Barrett Grieve (2029, La Jolla, CA) lined a ball hard right back up the middle for a base hit. A short, direct path and gap to gap approach allows for frequent line drives to the big part of the field.

Owen Digenan (2027, Poway, CA) hammered a ball to deep center field for a double. Quick hands and advanced barrel feel generate hard hit contact regularly. Digenan followed it with another loud barrel, recording a sac fly to deep center field. Strong two-way potential was also shown, running the fastball up to 81 mph.

Dylan Allen (2027, Redondo Beach, CA) laced a ball back up the middle for a base hit. A simple swing stays balanced well throughout. Allen also showed quality speed on the bases, immediately stealing second and third.

Andrew Lomeli (2027, Upland, CA) jumped on a fastball over the plate and lined it into left field for a base hit. Quick hands allow the bat head to get out front and hit balls hard to the pullside.

Luke Hoffman (2027, Foothill Ranch, CA) found one of the loudest barrels of the day with a ground rule double to left field, followed by two more base hits throughout the ballgame. Quality extension out front allows for balls to be driven with authority despite a smaller build.

Austin Olness (2027, Los Angeles, CA) impressed on the mound, overpowering hitters with a dominant two-pitch mix. The fastball sat 80-82 mph, pairing with a sharp curveball at 64-67 mph. Both offerings were thrown for strikes often and missed bats at a high rate. Olness also found a loud barrel late in the game, hammering a ball to deep left-center field for a triple.

Austin Junk (2028, Redondo Beach, CA) showcased the ability to make an impact with his speed. Junk showed quick acceleration down the line, beating out an infield single and immediately stealing second.

Joaquin Covarrubias (2027, Upland, CA) hammered a hanging breaking ball down the right field line for a double. A lofted path keeps the barrel in the zone a long time, allowing for quality contact consistently.

Slade Sessums (2027, Highland, CA) had a strong showing at the plate, recording two base hits to the pullside. A balanced swing showed the ability to jump on mistakes and hit them hard to left field.
