College Notebook: December 2

UNC Greensboro Spartans

2025 Highlights: A year after head coach Cody Ellis led the Spartans to the SoCon Regular Season title in 2024, the exodus of impact talent caught up with his club. They started off the season in a promising way with a series win over Creighton, a mid-week win over Wake Forest and a victory on the road at Virginia Tech. However, they would end up losing 8 out of their next 10 games and from there the rollercoaster of a season began. When it was all said and done, the Spartans won 21 games, finished 6th in the regular season with 9 wins in conference play and would lose to Wofford in the first game of the SoCon Tournament.

Impact Returners:

· Junior Jacob Dilley (.255/.431/.356, 7 doubles, 6 HR, 20 RBI) has the full complement of tools behind the dish with improved power and plate discipline

· Sophomore Parker Wight (.260/.479/.399, 11 doubles, 9 HR, 28 RBI) is a physical lefthanded hitter with power to all fields

· Jacob Budzik (.287/.512/.384, 15 doubles, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 8 SB) senior shortstop with elite glove skills and a plus arm

· Senior Luke Jenkins (.261/.317/.358, 6 doubles and 20 RBI) had a huge fall and is starting to come into his power, primed for a big year

· Brantley Truitt (.318/.442/.409, 6 doubles, 3 HR, 21 RBI, 9 SB) junior who is super athletic and impacts the game on both sides of the ball

· Junior LHP Noah Chapman (5.14, 5-3, 21 app, 7 starts, 68.1 IP, 76:16 K:BB) commands his 3-pitch mix with a fastball that will reach 95 mph

· Sophomore Jake Colucci (5.03, 20 app, 34.0 IP, 21:18 K:BB) has made a jump across the board and will take his plus changeup into the rotation in ‘26

· Mason Dear (8.40, 20 app, 2 saves, 31.1 IP, 31:22 K:BB) shows a wipeout slider and will anchor the backend of the bullpen

Intriguing Newcomers:

· Senior Brody Gardner (.346/.503/.438, 16 doubles, 4 HR, 46 RBI, 9 SB) transfers in from Greensboro College and will challenge for time in centerfield

· Shippensburg University transfer JT Weaver (4.62, 5-2, 10 starts, 48.2 IP, 36:15 K:BB) feel for 3-pitches with a ton of experience who will anchor the rotation

· Junior Jake Mueller (.327/.622/.423, 19 doubles, 15 HR, 63 RBI) comes in from Florida Southwest State and will infuse elite power into the middle of the lineup

· Anthony Ruocco (.354/.500/.471, 14 doubles, 3 HR, 44 RBI, 22 SB) also comes in from Florida Southwest State and will anchor the middle infield at second base

· Queens transfer Jake Barbour (.252/.340/.319, 8 doubles, 2 HR, 20 RBI, 11 SB) is ready for a big year and should handle the hot corner

2026 Outlook: Ellis has instilled an ultra-aggressive mentality on the offensive side, they run the bases with reckless abandon and stress opposing defenses. Last year was an enigma as they struggled to score runs but they have significantly upgraded their offense components through the transfer portal. This year’s offense has speed at the top and bottom of the lineup with plenty of juice in the middle. The pitching staff is in a good spot with the rotation and if they can get some length in the middle innings from some of their depth guys this could be the best staff they have had in the last half decade. The SoCon is a wild league, you must score runs in bunches to compete and UNCG should be ready to compete for another championship.

Wichita State Shockers

2025 Highlights: The Shockers took a bit of a step back in ’25 after winning 32 games during the 2024 slate. They struggled to put together wins on the road were they only won 5 games all year but tripled that production at home with a total of 15 victories. The pitching staff didn’t give the young offense much margin for error as they carried a 6.60 team ERA and only had one regular contributor on the mound with an ERA under 5.00 all told. With the bats, they only slugged .390 as a team and averaged just one stolen base every other game, make run scoring opportunities hard to come by. They finished May playing their best ball of the year as they won 7 of their last 10 regular season games before losing to Charlotte and USF in the American Conference Tournament.

Impact Returners:

· Junior Zeb Henry (.241/.379/.378, 2 doubles) saw limited action last year but is a blue-collar scrappy type of player who is ready to break out this spring

· Senior Jaden Gustafson (.303/.438/.396, 9 doubles, 3 HR, 26 RBI) physical 6-3/215 who is just starting to tap into his power, top returning hitter

· Owen Washburn (.292/.513/.388, 5 doubles, 6 HR, 23 RBI in ’24 at Texas Tech) senior who missed last year with an injury, has elite power to all fields

· Junior Brady Hamilton (5.38, 2-7, 16 starts, 78.2 IP, 63:43 K:BB) had a breakout summer in the Cape, clean delivery with low-90s fastball and plus curveball

· Karsen Richard (9.00, 24 app, 16.0 IP, 23:24 K:BB) senior who will anchor the back of the bullpen as the closer, unhittable curveball and has refined command

Intriguing Newcomers:

· Oklahoma State transfer Jayson Jones (.222/.376/.310, 9 doubles, 6 HR, 31 RBI) also spent time at Arkansas, if he cuts down on swing and miss his power will be a factor

· Jack Quick (.415/.555/.858, 19 doubles, 19 HR, 91 RBI) transfers in from Andrew College, consistently squares the ball with loud impact, could have huge season

· Junior Brok Eddy (2.32, 10-3, 13 starts, 81.1 IP, 83:31 K:BB) transfers in from Blinn College with a mid-90s heater and power breaker, durable and resilient

· Freshman LHP Ethan Rogers was a 19th round draft pick by Detroit but elected to come to school and will be an impact with his low-90s fastball and two real breakers

· Midland College transfer Josh Wulfert (.423/.496/.778, 28 doubles, 9 HR, 72 RBI, 32 SB) great eye at the dish with more walks than Ks, elite footspeed and bat-to-ball skills

· Alex Ulloa (.285/.431/.356, 14 doubles, 7 HR, 42 RBI) comes in from FIU with a wealth of experience and flexibility with the stick and the glove

2026 Outlook: Brian Green enters his 3rd season as the head coach of the Shockers. He is a proven winner and has had a couple years to implement his systems, philosophies and style of play. With the upgrades and experience they have returning on the mound they should drastically improve on their 6.60 team ERA from a year ago. They will also have a nice blend of impact transfer bats to go with some quality veterans, making their offense much more potent. They play 18 of their first 23 games at Gene Stephenson Park before opening American Conference play, so they will most likely get off to a scintillating start. The league looks like it is wide open in ’26 and Wichita State has the pieces to be there at the end. If they get the anticipated contributions from their new comers, it could be a banner season for the Shockers.

Dan Pardini, LHP, Class of 2026 Commitment: Penn State Penn State continued their Tri-State area recruiting trend, landing southpaw Dan Pardini out of Christian Brothers Academy. Pardini works from a medium left-handed frame with present strength in the lower half. He starts above the belt before transitioning into a sidestep windup that features a high and quick leg load. Pardini fires down the mound via a standard reach back arm action and a true three-quarters slot, with ease and repeatability to the operation. The Nittany Lions’ recruit operates in the mid-to-high 80s with the heater, flashing cutting action, while mixing in a sweeping slider. Pardini displays feel to land on both offerings, carving through lineups thanks to his two-pitch mix. PG All-Americans: Where are they now?

Tyler Kotila

PG All-Americans - Where are they now? Every year, Perfect Game hosts its All-American Classic, one of the most prestigious honors for high school players across the country. It’s a storied event with 23 years of rich history — between the countless big leaguers who have gone on to produce incredible big-league careers, to future World Series champions, and players from more recent years who still have a whole road ahead of themselves. This week, our PG Draft Team has decided to take a look back at the history of this event over the years. Our scouts on the draft team went through and selected a PG All-American Classic from the past to discuss across three different eras. Over its 23-year history, we have divided it into three eras: the 2000s, the 2010s, and the 2020s. Our Scouts take a look at some of the noteworthy performers from the years they chose, and give a little...

It’s the time of the year again (i.e. the off-season) for the annual PG Down on the Farm feature.  We identify a top prospect in each of the 30 Major League organizations with as much Perfect Game background as possible and delve into that PG history for some insight into his development as a prospect.  Some of them might be high profile, high draft pick, ex-PG All-American talents who fans have been long familiar with.  Others might be more obscure prospects who have significantly improved either in college or as professionals.  Note that players who have used up their rookie eligibility are not considered. The idea isn’t to necessarily pick the best PG background prospect in each organization but the one who might be closest to the big leagues.  Sometimes that is the same player, other times not. And there is plenty of variation among organizations...

MLB Draft Superlatives

Tyler Henninger
Article Image
Most likely college player to make a massive jump up the board? Garrett Wright, C/OF, Tennessee Wright joins the Volunteers after two really quality seasons with the BGSU Falcons in the MAC. Wright has slashed .390/.505/.619 with 28 doubles, three triples, and 14 homers over his 430 plate appearances during his freshman/sophomore year campaign. He’s currently ranked 144th on the Top 150 MLB Draft Prospects, but I’m betting on a big year from the backstop as he settles in for the Vols. Wright’s got the upside at the plate and has shown it in the past; a big move up the board would be a no-brainer if he can tap into that success he’s seen before at the SEC level. -Tyler Kotila C Ryder Helfrick (@RazorbackBSB) deposits this over the wall for a solo shot. Gets to impact easy & the bat speed/strength is evident, huge uptick in #’s across the board offensively...

Regional Superlatives: Four Corners

Most Likely To Make a Huge Jump in the Rankings in 2026 Wade Cozart (‘28, NM) competed in this complete game striking out 14 while filling up the zone consistently. Fastball up to 90mph and settled in at 85-88mph. Quick arm with a repeatable motion. #AZFallState pic.twitter.com/gqtiiIhkKY — Perfect Game Four Corners (@PG_FourCorners) October 18, 2025 Wade Cozart (2028, Carlsbad, NM) is a sneaky two-way player that has flown under the radar for now, but looks poised to make a significant jump next year. At the plate, the left-handed hitting Cozart possesses a fluid stroke with sneaky power. He posted an OPS over 1.400 in a smaller sample this summer. While there are some tools on the offensive side, Cozart's highest potential is likely on the mound. The righthander was up to 90 mph in PG events this year already with feel for a slider and changeup shown. He pounds the zone and...

Brighton Fontaine, RHP, Class of 2026 Commitment: St. John's Fontaine made his pact to the Johnnies and Coach Hampton, as the durable right-hander adds another to the staff that should be able to garner innings immediately upon reaching campus. He runs it into the low-90s with downhill plane and heaviness through the zone, as he generates plenty of misses when in the zone. He pairs it with a two-plane slider and heavy faded changeup to complete his repertoire. The durability, physicality scream innings eater should the command take a step forward. Brent Walulak, INF, Class of 2027 Commitment: Marist Walulak makes four commits for the Red Foxes and Coach Ratchford, bringing a level athleticism to the group that should make an impact once on campus. The left-handed hitting infielder can handle all three infield spots effectively albeit is probably better suited for second long-term....
