Scout Stories: Iowa Select Recap

While plenty of teams came to Prospect Meadows in Iowa this fall from all over, the Iowa Select organization was able to make its presence known. They clashed with plenty of big-time organizations like the Cangelosi Sparks, Nebraska Prospects, Iowa Sticks, and GRB, among others, in plenty of tournaments on the Fall circuit in Iowa. However, Iowa Select brought teams to contend throughout all of the age ranges.

With that in mind, let's talk through one Iowa Select team from the Class of 2024, the Class of 2025, and so on through the Class of 2028. We'll detail some of the standout players from these teams, what they did well this fall, and what makes them crucial to the success of their Iowa Select team.

There's been plenty of talent on these Iowa Select teams over the years, and each of these years has been a new wave of players who will move on to play at the collegiate and even professional level one day. Let's jump into some of the PG Iowa Select teams who left their mark on the PG circuit in Iowa this fall.

Iowa Select 2024 Scout (21-4 PG Record)

Standout Hitter:
Kelvin Jones Jr. (2025, Chicago, Ill.)
Kelvin Jones Jr. played up with the Iowa Select 2024 Scout team as a Class of 2025 prospect. The 1B/OF has a ton to like about him. He’s got a 5-foot-10, 170-pound frame with athleticism and quick twitch that will help him lock down an outfield role. He’s uncommitted right now, but his performance this fall sure made some noise. Jones Jr. slashed .309/.458/.564 with nine extra-base hits over 55 at-bats. He drove in 16 runs and was able to continuously get the job done as an impact bat for this team. Jones Jr. helped his squad churn out wins and stay in ballgames. He’s got athleticism and a quick bat to do damage. He keeps things simple and has a fluid stroke from the left side that allows him to do damage.

Top Hitter Moving On: Colin Coonradt (2024, Cedar Falls, Iowa)
Colin Coonradt was a consistent face at the top of the lineup with the Iowa 2024 Select Scout team this fall, and his performances were often pretty loud. He’s moving and heading to Iowa’s program next fall, and the tools are pretty intriguing. He’s a 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame with strength throughout. He impacts the ball well, and it shows with his ability to drive it out of the yard. Coonradt slashed .370/.514/.833 with five doubles, four triples, and four home runs. He drove in 15 runs while walking 14 times, compared to just eight punchouts all fall. The Hawkeyes commit has the tools to be exceptional and can be an impactful player for Iowa next fall.

Standout Pitcher: Gage Bishop (2024, Dubuque, Iowa)
One of the consistent arms I saw get up on the mound and shove this fall was Gage Bishop. The Wartburg College commit was able to roll up some good outings this fall, pitching deep into games to get it done. He’s a more compact frame with a clean and repeatable move working downhill. Bishop works into the mid- to upper-80s on his fastball, pairing it with a slurvy-breaking ball that had some tilt with good depth to it. In total, Bishop logged 20.0 innings for the Iowa Select Scout squad, pitching to a 2.80 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He had ten walks to 23 punchouts and was able to help his team put up great numbers this fall.

Top Pitcher Moving On: Andrew Hamlett (2024, Cedar Rapids, Iowa)
Death, taxes, and Andrew Hamlett putting together quality starts. It was a consistent part of this fall as Hamlett was able to be a real weapon pitching for Iowa Select Scout 2024. The Southeastern CC commit will be able to join their staff next fall and provide immediate benefit. He’s a left-handed arm with great pitchability and the makeup of a strike thrower. Hamlett logged 29.0 innings, where he pitched to a 0.48 ERA and a 0.52 WHIP. This also comes while walking only three opposing hitters, striking out 47 hitters to pair. It was an incredible fall for Hamlett and was certainly lights out every time he stepped on the mound.

Iowa Select 2025 Scout (14-5 PG Record)

Standout Hitter: Reed Strohmeyer (2025, Dubuque, Iowa)
Reed Strohmeyer may be uncommitted right now, but he had an exceptional fall, finding ways to be a standout bat. Strohmeyer got the job done routinely and showed off tools in the batters’ box and in the field. He’s got a projectable 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame with room to keep filling out. He swings it from the left side and has a great feel for the barrel. He’s got a wider base, which helps him stay balanced through contact, getting the bat to the ball and doing damage. He slashed .457/.590/.652 with a handful of extra-base hits. He walked 14 times this fall, striking out just eight times. Strohmeyer has an eye for the strike zone and seldom expands the zone. There’s plenty to like about the uncommitted bat.

Dark Horse Hitter: Owen Hicks (2025, Iowa City, Iowa)
Another bat from the top of the Iowa Select 2025 Scout lineup who was a standout bat is Owen Hicks. Like Strohemyer from above, he’s an uncommitted infielder, and there are tools to like here. He’s a 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame with room to keep adding strength. It’s a shorter path to contact with strength to get on plane with pitches and drive the ball. He’s able to stay connected well through contact to do damage. Hicks slashed .356/.491/.467 this fall with ten walks and ten punch outs, getting it done for the Iowa Select 2025 Scout team.

Standout Pitcher: Tatem Telfer (2025, Hedrick, Iowa)
One of the bulldog arms that the Iowa Select 2025 Scout relied on this fall was Tatem Telfer. The now Arkansas State commit has a big and physical 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame with strength throughout that makes for a loud mound presence. He’s a left-handed pitcher who has been able to get it done when called upon. He’s worked into the mid- to upper-80s on his fastball. He pitches from a higher slot, releasing up high to create some angle. It’s problematic for some hitters, as the heater can get on you pretty quickly. He’s got a full three-pitch mix. The breaker has good downer shape and a fading changeup to round things out. Telfer threw 24.2 innings, where he managed a 3.41 ERA, striking out 32 opposing hitters along the way.

Dark Horse Pitcher: Drake Obermueller (2025, Iowa City, Iowa)
One of the arms that often caught my attention on the mound this fall was Drake Obermueller. Good bloodlines here, and there’s room to keep improving moving forward, with a couple of really impressive outings this fall. Obermueller is an uncommitted right-handed pitcher with tools to pitch deep into games on the mound. He’s got an athletic build and compact frame that helps him get the job done on the mound with consistent performances. He threw a trio of outings, totaling 16.0 innings pitched, managing a 0.44 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP. He had eight walks to 16 strikeouts as well. He’s someone to keep an eye on.

Iowa Select 2026 Scout (16-4 PG Record)

Standout Hitter: Xavier Perez (2027, Urbana, Iowa)
Xavier Perez played up as a 2027 prospect on the Iowa Select 2026 Scout Team, and he still got the job done. He’s a switch-hitting backstop with a smooth stroke from both sides of the plate. He’s aggressive with the leg lift but stays connected with a balanced stride into contact. Perez uses the strength in his 6-foot, 170-pound frame to get the job done often. He swings hard and rotates quickly, creating some leverage for hard contact. Perez slashed .333/.482/.595 with eight extra-base hits and 11 runs driven in. Over 42 at-bats, Perez walked 11 times and struck out only six times. The Iowa Hawkeyes took really good at-bats for the Iowa Select 2026 Scout team and constantly found ways to stand out.

Dark Horse Hitter: Ty Donels (2026, Cedar Rapids, Iowa)
One of the hitters who performed exceptionally well for this Iowa Select 2026 Scout quad is Ty Donels. The Cedar Rapids native was able to head out to Prospect Meadows and find ways to do damage from the right side of the dish. He has a 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with strength and some quick-twitch actions. Donels starts pretty spread in his stance and rotates quickly to get the bat on the ball, showing off some bat speed and strength to impact out front. He hit well this fall, slashing .360/.508/.440, walking 12 times and striking out just five over 50 at-bats. Keep an eye on Donels moving forward as he looks to keep taking steps in his development.

Standout Pitcher: Drew Fillenworth (2026, Norway, Iowa)
One of the arms that performed well for Iowa Select Scout 2026 was Drew Fillenworth. The right-handed pitcher has a 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame with longer levers that he uses well to get extension working down the mound. He throws strikes with good pitchability. He worked up into the low-80s on his fastball and was able to mix in a well-commanded slider. Flashes a changeup for a full three-pitch mix. Fillenworth gets it done on the mound and was able to string together some good performances. He threw 19.2 innings this fall, pitching to a 0.71 ERA and a 0.61 WHIP. He allowed just five walks, striking out 28 hitters in comparison. Fillenworth was a standout arm on the mound for Iowa Select 2026 Scout, finding ways to navigate the opposing lineup and attack hitters.

Dark Horse Pitcher: Tait Tierney (2026, Fairfax, Iowa)
Tait Tierney was an absolute master of consistency on the mound this fall. The right-handed pitcher has a 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame with an uber-clean and repeatable delivery. He can repeat it well, staying consistent with fluid actions on the mound altogether. Tierney may not come out and blow 90 mph past you, but he has a good pitch mix with pinpoint command. He’s got a bigger curveball that he can flip for strikes as well. He works the corners and makes for a tough at-bat, being able to toy with hitters and remain consistent throughout an outing. Tierney logged 27.0 innings for Iowa Select 2024, managing a 1.30 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. He had just eight walks and 25 strikeouts to his credit along the way. Tierney’s certainly an arm to keep an eye on moving forward as he continues to take steps in his development.

Iowa Select 2027 Gavin (12-3 PG Record)

Standout Hitter:
Tom Norton (2027, Muscatine, Iowa)
Tom Norton is a standout player on both sides of the ball, but he handled the stick really well for Iowa Select 2027 Gavin this fall. Norton’s got a massive 6-foot-3, 175-pound frame with strength present and room to keep adding more moving forward. He handles the stick well, with some thump off the barrel. The right-handed hitter loads up over the backside and swings hard through the zone. He slashed .426/.500/.574 with six extra-base hits, driving in 17 runs over 47 at-bats. Norton got it done at the dish but also on the mound. He managed 13.2 innings pitched on the mound with a 1.54 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. He walked 11, with 29 punchouts to his credit as well. He stood out on both sides of the ball for Iowa Select 2027 Gavin.

Dark Horse Hitter: Beau Morio (2027, Solon, Iowa)
Beau Morio has plenty to like about his tools. They project well, and the abilities in the batters’ box were on display this fall. The Hawkeyes commit has a 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame with an athletic build. In the batter’s box, Morio swings it from the right side with a good feel for the barrel to get the bat on it and do damage. He has good barrel control, allowing him to do damage out front and work pull-side for success. Morio slashed .344/.512/.438 with plenty of good at-bats under his belt for Iowa Select 2027 Gavin. He’s someone to keep watching moving forward, with plenty to like in the batters’ box. But he’s also been up into the upper-70s on his fastball off the mound, with a couple of innings under his belt this fall.

Standout Pitcher: Del Brewer (2027, Iowa City, Iowa)
Del Brewer was able to get the job done for his team as one of the intriguing arms on the mound. Brewer is a 5-foot-8, 140-pound right-handed pitcher with room to keep filling out the frame moving forward. He was able to get the job done for Iowa Select 2027 Gavin when called upon. He threw 14.2 innings for his team, pitching to a 0.96 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP along the way. He’s been into the upper-70s on his fastball and is able to navigate the opposing lineups and hold them off the board for the most part. He was one of the standout arms from this Iowa Select 2027 Gavin squad this fall.

Dark Horse Pitcher: William Litton (2027, Iowa City, Iowa)
One of the arms for Iowa Select 2027 Gavin, who helped his team when he took to the mound, was William Litton. He's someone to keep an eye on as he continues to take steps in his development. The right-handed pitcher has lengthy levers throughout his 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame, with room to keep filling out moving forward. On the mound, Litton was able to pitch 22.0 innings on the mound, where he managed an impressive 0.64 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP. He struck out 28 hitters while walking just five opposing hitters. He's definitely someone to watch moving forward.

Iowa Select 2028 Richert (9-6 PG Record)

Standout Hitter:
Carson Pata (2028, Marion, Iowa)
Carson Pata was one of the hitters from the Iowa Select 2028 Richert lineup who could come through for his team often. He’s shown off tools that bode well moving forward, being able to stay on pitches and work through the zone with good intent. Pata slashed .400/.700/.500 for Iowa Select 2028 Richert, with nine walks to just four punchouts, being able to get on base a good bit. The right-handed bat had himself a good fall, showing off some tools to watch moving forward.

The Next Wave: Derek Roling (2028, Cedar Rapids, Iowa)
One of the players who was pretty toolsy in my looks this fall was Derek Roling. The 6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitter has length to his levers with the ability to drive the ball in the air showing already. He’s got a good feel for the barrel to work through the zone on an uphill path and do some damage. He hit .478/.571/.609 this fall, with three doubles and ten runs driven in. He showed off a good feel for the barrel, being able to get the bat on the ball and produce offense for the Iowa Select 2028 Richert squad.

Standout Pitcher: Louk Meidlinger (2028, Marion, Iowa)
One of the players who was able to get it done on the mound for his team was Louk Meidlinger. The right-handed pitcher was able to log some good outings under his belt this fall for the Iowa Select 2028 Richert squad. He threw 16.0 innings this fall, where he pitched to a 1.31 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. He struck out 16 opposing hitters and was able to find ways to keep the opposition at bay. He’s been up around 70 mph on the fastball and can navigate the opposing hitters well, as he did this fall. He’s someone to keep an eye on moving forward.

The Next Wave: Cade Hannen (2028, Robins, Iowa)
Cade Hannen is someone who stands out on both sides of the ball. There are projectable tools that make him a name to keep an eye on as he continues making strides in his development, polishing his tools as he goes. Hannen’s a 6-foot-1, 175-pound build with an athletic frame with some strength and room to keep adding. On the mound, he’s worked up into the mid-70s and has a simple delivery. He’s been solid on both sides of the ball, showing off some simple and strong swings in the batter’s box. Hannen’s someone to keep an eye on moving forward.

Wrapping Things Up:
The Iowa Select teams of all ages came out and competed last fall on the circuit. They're an organization looking to compete, and as we look ahead to 2024, there will be even more competition for the Iowa Select teams to participate in. The PG Iowa Spring League will be running once again next spring.

Since there is no high-school baseball in the spring in Iowa, unlike everywhere else, these Iowa-based prospects will get the chance to compete against one another in the PG Iowa Spring League. Be on the lookout for plenty of these prospects mentioned to be on the circuit again next spring!

He toed the rubber in round two of the playoffs, proceeding to toss six innings with eight punchouts and zero earned runs allowed. The 6-foot southpaw filled up all four quadrants of the strike zone, attacking hitters early and often with his fastball. Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

Emily Hicks
Article Image
JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...
