2022 High School Baseball Preview Index

41. University Liggett (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.)

2021 Record: 31-5
Head Coach: Dan Cimini
Notable Standout(s): 3B Jarren Purify (Michigan), C Oliver Service, RHP Jack Jones (Michigan State), 1B Ryan Jones, SS Reggie Sharpe (Michigan), 3B Preston Barr, RHP Blake Ilitch

A team that seemingly cruised to a state title a year ago, with a young roster, is back with most of the same players who produced along the way. This is still a younger team on paper, but the amount of baseball played among the group speaks differently to their overall experience in a variety of high-pressure situations. Fellow Michigan commits Jarren Purify and Reggie Sharpe are a pair of pure hitters that’ll stock the lineup with athleticism and high-end bat-to-ball while guys like Oliver Service and Ryan Jones, among others, bring some thump to it. They should be led on the mound by right-handed junior Jack Jones, who is committed in-state to the Spartans, but look for talented freshman Blake Ilitch to factor into some innings as well.

42. Bartram Trail (St. Johns, Fla.)
2021 Record: 22-6
Head Coach: Ryan Fitzpatrick
Notable Standout(s): SS Justin Nadeau (Jacksonville), RHP Bryce Kemper, SS Alex Lodise (North Florida), RHP Ashton Pocol (Tampa), OF James Brody Delamielleure (Notre Dame), C Anthony Saleeba (South Florida), RHP Schuyler Sandford (Florida State), RHP Jesse Murrell (South Florida), 3B Kolt Myers (South Florida), SS Chris Davila, SS Jacob Kendall (Florida)

The Bears are coming off a strong 2021 season where they outscored their opponents by 100 runs on their way to a third-round appearance in the Florida Class 7A State Playoffs. All things seem to still be trending up for this club offensively as they return some of their top performers from last season in senior middle infielders Justin Nadeau and Alex Lodise as well as junior outfielder James Brody Delamielleure. With those three leading the way and the depth that the talented underclassmen on this roster can provide, this has the potential to be one of the deeper lineups in the sunshine state. On the mound, Coach Fitzpatrick gets back his top three arms from a year ago in seniors Bryce Kemper and Ashton Pocol as well as sophomore Schuyler Sandford, after all three threw 30-plus innings in 2021 with ERAs all under 4.00.

43. Charlotte Christian (Charlotte, N.C.)
2021 Record: 22-7
Head Coach: Greg Simmons
Notable Standout(s): RHP Calvert Clark (Clemson), 3B Judd Utermark (Ole Miss), RHP Everette Harris (NC State), SS Tanner McCammon (Elon), RHP Wesley Jones (UNC-Charlotte), LHP John Lash

It’s always a good year when your last game of the season is a win, specifically to clinch a state championship, and this team did just that in 2021. They’re losing some production out of the now-graduated senior class but there’s both talent and experience to go around on this roster with a handful of key contributors from that championship team a year ago. Calvert Clark, now a senior, should lead the way on the mound while contributing on the offensive end as well while guys like Everette Harris, Wesley Jones and freshman phenom John Lash all could be in the mix for important innings. On the other side of the ball, guys like Judd Utermark, who hit near the top last spring, and Tanner McCammon, who swung it well too, should lead an offense that has not just the experience of making a state title run, but an abundance of pure talent.

44. North Paulding (Dallas, Ga.)
2021 Record: 30-10
Head Coach: Dennis Jordan
Notable Standout(s): 1B Tysen Benford, C Grayson Taylor (South Alabama), RHP Hunter Sanders (Georgia Highlands), RHP Charlie Siegel, LHP, Jake Hembree (Georgia), RHP Davis Budd, SS Payton Doyle, C Cayden Sheffield (Houston)

It’s a four-headed monster on the mound that has the hopes so high in Dallas, Ga. this year as the Wolfpack will look to finish off a journey that ended in a state runner-up finish in 2021. The likes of Hunter Sanders, Charlie Siegel, Jake Hembree, and Davis Budd will give Head Coach Dennis Jordan four arms that he can count on to come in and work in the mid- to upper-80s and absolutely pound the strike zone. Offensively it’s a combination of upperclassmen Tysen Benford, Grayson Taylor and Payton Doyle that build a strong nucleus while sophomore Cayden Sheffield brings a type of Swiss army knife skill set that should allow him to contribute in multiple ways for this years’ Wolfpack club.

45. American Fork (American Fork, Utah)
2021 Record: 30-1
Head Coach: Jarod Ingersoll
Notable Standout(s): SS Fisher Ingersoll (TCU), LHP Kaden Carpenter (Utah), SS Ryder Robinson (TCU), OF Dax Newman, 3B Easton Jones (BYU)

It’s hard to expect more out of a team after a wildly impressive 30-1 record and state title a year ago but given they will bring back the bulk of their production on the offensive end and a significant number of innings on the mound, there’s no reason to believe this program won’t be able to make it back-to-back at the end of the spring. Led by shortstop Fisher Ingersoll, who hit to the tune of a .575 average last spring including 23 extra-base hits, they’ve now got a group of seniors that will bring various levels of experience to the lineup. He’s joined by an array of productive bats including Kaden Carpenter, who had six home runs among his 22 extra-base hits, Dax Newman, who hit over .400, Easton Jones, who had four home runs and 41 RBI, and underclassman Ryder Robinson, who hit an impressive .440 as a sophomore. There’s innings to replace at the top of the rotation but the formerly-mentioned Carpenter and Newman had seven and six wins respectively last spring, so they’ll make a strong one-two punch this spring.

46. Rockwall (Rockwall, Texas)
2021 Record: 31-13-1
Head Coach: Barry Rose
Notable Standout(s): SS Andrew Tellia (Weatherford College), RHP Charlie Giese (Weatherford College), RHP Tag Pacot (Ouachita Baptist), SS Tate Sloan, LHP Cade Crossland, SS Brayden Randle (Texas), C Andrew Mac Rose

The 2022 Yellowjackets lineup will return plenty of experience from a team that came up just a game short of a state semifinal berth in 2021 while swinging it to the tune of a .310 average as a team. On the infield, the trio of Andrew Tellia, Tate Sloan, and Brayden Randle will not only anchor that potent lineup once again but also be counted on to repeat last season’s team fielding percentage of .955. Junior Andrew Mac Rose brings back the most experience on the mound along with senior left-hander Cade Crossland. Look for seniors Charlie Giese and Tag Pacot to step into bigger roles as well with Coach Rose and his staff looking to replace Daniel Cunningham, a big piece of last year’s staff.

47. Grand Blanc HS (Grand Blanc, Mich.)
2021 Record: 33-12
Head Coach: Kevin Hubbs
Notable Standout(s): RHP David Lally (Notre Dame), 3B Nathan Fidelino, 3B Nate Helms (Northwood), C Hunter Ames

Although the overall record may not show it, this Grand Blanc team cruised to a state title last spring, outscoring their opponents 29-4 through their five playoff wins. While there’s some turnover that comes with any program, the bulk of the state title team returns for this spring and will give them a good shot to make a run at repeating. David Lally, an extremely talented right-hander who will draw draft attention throughout the spring, is the big name here and he should give them the bulk of the important innings while also being a crucial part of the lineup. Sophomore Nathan Fidelino is an up-and-coming offensive prospect in the state and will get a chance to prove himself this spring while two-sport stars Nate Helms and Hunter Ames will certainly play a part in producing what Coach Kevin Hubbs needs to make it back to MSU.

48. Lambert (Suwanee, Ga.)
2021 Record: 24-15
Head Coach: Rick Howard
Notable Standout(s): RHP Colin Linder (Texas A&M), OF Parker Brosius (Georgia Tech), RHP Nathan Dvorsky (Clemson), RHP Justin Haskins (Flagler College), RHP Ashton Smith (Austin Peay), RHP Greyson Madonia, 3B Tanner Patterson, OF Manuel Prados

It all starts on the mound in 2022 for Head Coach Rick Howard and the Longhorns. Senior arms Colin Linder, Nathan Dvorsky, Justin Haskins, and Ashton Smith lead what could be the deepest rotation in the state with all four running the fastball into the upper-80s/low-90s. Then you factor in junior Greysen Madonia, who is coming off a monster summer on the travel circuit with an upper-80s fastball of his own, and you see why this year’s Longhorn club is one of the favorites in the Georgia 7A Classification. Senior outfielder Parker Brosius will lead a lineup that sees some turnover after the 2021 season, but juniors Tanner Patterson and Manuel Prados should both be counted on to fill bigger roles.

49. Bishop Hendricken (Warwick, R.I.)
2021 Record: 11-4
Head Coach: Ed Holloway
Notable Standout(s): C Brandyn Durand (Kentucky), OF Jared Munoz (UMass), C Andrew Noland (Wake Forest), RHP Dorsy Asencio, LHP Alexander Clemmey (Vanderbilt), OF Griffin Crain (Louisville), SS Jack LaRose (UConn)

It was an earlier exit than expected for Bishop Hendricken in 2021, but the team they bring back for this spring is certainly one talented enough to make a deep playoff run. A trio of seniors should lead the way on the offensive end with Brandyn Durand, Jared Munoz and Andrew Noland all looking to cap their high school careers with a state title before heading to their respective Division-I programs, while junior Alexander Clemmey sits as one of the top-ranked left-handers in the entire country and should find success against a majority of the lineups they’ll face this spring. They’ve got some young depth on the offensive end with talented sophomores like Griffin Crain and Jack LaRose adding to what should be one of the stronger offenses in the region.

50. Blue Valley Southwest (Overland Park, Kan.)
2021 Record: 22-3
Head Coach: Tyler Kincaid
Notable Standout(s): RHP Ben Bybee (Arkansas), SS Cooper Kelly (Kansas), SS Kuyper Kendall (Washburn), 3B TJ Coats, 2B Bo Shinkle (Kent State), RHP Anson Seibert

Even with the loss of a talented 2021 senior class, Coach Kincaid's club looks to have plenty of talent back in 2022 to repeat last season’s state championship run. Senior right-hander Ben Bybee is back and figures to be a big part on the mound while sophomore right-hander Anson Seibert looks like the next in what is becoming a long line of talented pitchers to hail from the Overland Park area with his already upper-80s fastball. Senior middle infielders Cooper Kelly and Kuyper Kendall will lead the way with the bats while younger guys like TJ Coats and Bo Shinkle have both shown solid upside with the bat on the summer travel circuit and will look to carry that over to the spring season.

Barbe (LA) has continued to dominate and holds onto the No. 3 spot while Tomball (TX) skyrockets in this update to No. 4 in the country, currently holding an incredible 30-0-1 record. College Players of the Week: April 21

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
April 21st Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Tague Davis, IF, Louisville  The Louisville Cardinals (22-18) haven’t been able to get themselves in much of a groove this spring, their longest winning streak is 5-games, and they are (4-6) in their last 10-games.  The issue has not been the offense as the Cardinals are averaging over 8-runs per game and Tague Davis is leading the club in virtually every offensive category.  His calling card is his 70-grade power and that was on display last weekend in their series against Cal.  In the three-game series, Davis went 7 for 12, scoring 4 runs, launching 5 home runs and collected 7 RBIs.  The 6-4/220 lefthanded hitter from West Chester, PA has a pure stroke, is one of the premier power hitters in the nation and has significantly improved his plate discipline from a year ago.  After his big weekend, he is...

College Top 25: April 20

As the old saying goes, “all good things must come to an end” and that was the case last Tuesday when UCLA (36-3) saw their 27-game win streak come to an end in a shutout loss to UCSB.  However, the No. 1 team in the land still has their 21-game winning streak in Big Ten to protect, as they have started off league play without a single blemish.  The Bruins will remain atop our poll this week and their historical start to the season roll on.  The UNC Tarheels (33-7-1) move up to No. 2 this week after they made their biggest statement of the year by taking the weekend series from now No. 4 Georgia Tech (32-7).  No. 3 Texas (30-8) and No. 5 Georgia (32-9) both went (3-1) on the week and won their SEC series to stay in contention for the regular season title.  Florida State (28-11) had a nice bounce back (4-0) week and re-enter the Top 10 at No. 8 this...

Coppy's Corner: April 16 POY Deep Dive

John Coppolella

Each week I huddle with Vinnie Cervino and Craig Cozart  to discuss Top-25 rankings and Players of the Week. In Coppy’s Corner, I dive deeper into these Players of the Week, providing analysis from 20+ years working in baseball front offices at the highest level.   Player of the Week: Jaquae Stewart – Texas State University  If you squint a little bit, you can see some Josh Naylor or Dominic Smith in Jaquae Stewart, with a stout build like a more powerful version of the teacup from the children’s song. Lately, the Sun Belt Conference has been child’s play for Stewart as he has been on fire showing an improved hit approach and power that tracks more with his 2024 performance at Northwest Florida State College than with his 2025 experience at the University of Texas. It’s tough for any player to jump from a JUCO in Florida to the big stage...

Since I first saw him as a sophomore, Gomez-Gudiño has long been one of my favorite prospects in the state. The backstop features a super physical frame at 6-foot-0, 215-pounds with a thick lower half and strong forearms. Defensively, Gomez-Gudiño has always stood out. He moves well for his size behind the plate and receives with confident hands. The catch-and-throw ability stands out. Gomez-Gudiño looks to be aggressive and will back pick runners often. Another week of undefeated weeks for our top 4 ranked teams. Joining them in the top 5, coming off an undefeated week of their own, is Florence-Darlington, a team we have consistently had as a top 10 team all season long. Cloud County and Midland College continue to put together strong weeks and climb the rankings each week it seems. Jumping into the rankings this week on the strength of a 15-game winning streak is Seminole State (OK). And Linn Benton makes the top 25 for a 2nd consecutive week and looks like the top team in the NWAC this spring. Plenty of high-level matchups at the JUCO level for some of the top teams in the county this next week.  Rk. DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 15

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
Welcome to this week's small school baseball rankings, covering NCAA Division II, the NAIA, and NCAA Division III. As the calendar turns toward the final weeks of the regular season, the urgency is real across all three levels — teams are running out of weekends to build their cases, and the extended postseason invitations that every program is chasing don't go to programs that peak in March. The next few weeks of results will carry more weight than anything that happened before spring break, and the postseason committees in all three divisions are watching closely. Every series dropped to a team you should beat, every road sweep you let get away — it all matters now in a way it simply didn't two months ago. What you'll also notice as you read through the breakdowns below is that the numbers are doing more of the heavy lifting in how these rankings are constructed. Run...
