I was able to see right-hander Cooper Rummel (2025, Austin, Texas) take the mound for a second time this tournament and though he wasn’t his sharpest, it was still a strong performance to help push his Austin Horns club onto the next round with a close victory over a resilient SJ Young Guns club. Standing with a rather ideal build for a pitcher at a broad shouldered, long limbed and higher waisted 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, Rummel certainly fits the mold of a “hard throwing Texan” as he upped the ante in his first inning of work, finishing with 5 innings of one-hit ball in which he punched out 8.

Despite a deeper arm stroke through the backside, Rummel’s arm stroke is plenty fast and he was often on time with his release early in the outing, shooting the knees with a fastball that sat very comfortably in the 86-88 mph range, bumping an 89 in the opening frame. His ability to get on top of the ball from a high three-quarters slot helped power the fastball downhill but even more impressive was just how easy the velocity came, even if he did taper off a tick by the end of his pitch count where he was living 81-84 mph. Rummel pitched heavily off of his fastball and rightfully so given the amount of early success he found with the pitch, though he did show both a curveball in the low-70s and a firmer changeup at 81 mph early in the contest. There’s no denying what the young Texan can bring to the mound and he’ll be an arm we circle back to see in his next start at the PG World Series.
