14u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2

It’s safe to say that even three days in to the 14u WWBA Championship the level of standout arms to take the mound is pretty extraordinary as we’ll dig into several big performances through the recap, beginning with right-hander Gavin Richars (2025, Fenton, Mo.). A lean and wiry built 6-foot, 156 pounds, Richars was given the ball against a talented Motor City squad and was exceptional after allowing a run in the first, settling in for zeroes over his next 5-plus frames in which he struck out 8 and didn’t allow a base hit. And while he did walk 5 on the game, it’s important to note after a leadoff walk to open the game, three of the others came at the very end of his outing with two outs, a jam which he would escape unscathed.

The physicality may not jump off the page just yet for Richars, but both his athleticism and arm speed most certainly do as he stays shorter through the backside before unleashing a fast right arm which produced some electric stuff. Already committed to Oklahoma, the future Sooner showed one of the better fastballs on the day as he ran it up to 87 mph and lived very consistently in the mid-80s throughout the duration of his start. Both his arm speed and velocity stand out but what as even more impressive for Richars was the consistent late running life through the zone which proved to be a true difference maker, eliciting weak contact when not missing bats all together.
