Summer Preview: 2024 Corner Infield

As high school baseball is starting to get going across the country in most regions, with some states actually heading into the playoffs, it all means the summer circuit is right around the corner. Over the next several weeks we will look at the top-ranked players at each position, in each class, while also taking a look at some gut-feel players that could be big risers. With players having more access to individual development, things will undoubtably change at a rapid pace in the early months of the Perfect Game schedule. This provides a good look at some of the top performers coming into 2021 who look primed to continue dominance or make their mark on a national level.

Aiden Harris, 3B/1B, (Va.)

Commitment: Virginia

Key Stats: .423-2-29

Short Story: Harris is a physical presence with a huge offensive ceiling and plenty of projection remaining. Versatile defender with athletic actions in both the grass and dirt. Good arm strength with ability to pitch as well.

Big Moment: The Virginia commit has been a constant performer throughout his PG career and pinpointing one particular moment could be difficult. Harris’ performance during the workout portion of the 2020 13U Select Festival solidified his prospect status and gave our scouting staff a glimpse into his potential future.

Bold Prediction: The continued refinement of his skills will allow for him to perhaps create some separation between where he fits long term. With additional maturity and the immense power potential, Harris will continue to be one of the best hitters within the class.


George Wolkow, 3B/1B, (Ill.)
6-6/220, L/R
Commitment: South Carolina
PG Events: 8
Key Stats: .346 AVG/.433 OBP/.818 OPS

Short Story: Physically mature 6-foot-6 frame with long levers and plenty of projection to dream on. Versatile defender with good coordination and speed for someone of his size. Massive power potential from the left side that will only continue to expand as he matures.

Big Moment: Wolkow announced his presence at the 14U National, where he showed off an ultra-projectable frame, athletic actions at various positions and a monster offensive profile. Couple that with effortless gas on the mound and you get one of the more intriguing two-way prospects in the country.

Bold Prediction: The South Carolina commit continues to evolve his game in all facets, while expanding upon his massive potential. Checks all the boxes in terms of future potential, look for Wolkow to continue at the top of the rankings throughout his prep career.


Andre' Modugno, 3B, (N.J.)
6-4/190, R/R
Commitment: Duke

Key Stats: .351-3-43

Short Story: Perhaps the best power/speed combination within the class. Massive offensive profile with power to all fields and good control of the barrel. 6.85 runner with athletic actions in the field and big-time arm strength.

Big Moment: The two-time PG Select Festival participant has been a steady performer on the circuit for some time now, but his performance for Canes National in the 2020 PG 15U World Series was unquestionably loud. Modugno hit .615 (8-for-13) for the event with three doubles, three massive home runs and 10 RBI.

Bold Prediction: Look for Modugno to continue performing on the circuit’s biggest stages. The Duke commit has a knack for the dramatic by producing in PG’s toughest events. Don’t be surprised to continue seeing this New Jersey native near the top of the rankings throughout his entire prep career.


Matthew Champion, 3B, (Calif.)

Key Stats: .282 avg., 41 RBI in 54 PG games, 2.50 ERA in 44 1/3 IP

Short Story: High-level two-way prospect with a fastball already in the upper-80s. Long, lean and athletic frame with solid defensive acumen and offensive upside. Polished right-hander with feel for three pitches.

Big Moment: Champion’s overall performance at the 2020 14U National Showcase gave our scouting staff a glimpse of the massive two-way potential that he exhibits. Showed impressive upside in all facets of his game, really shining on the mound where he ran his fastball up to 89 mph. Led to an eventual invite to the 2020 14U PG Select Festival.

Bold Prediction: Look for the Arizona State commit's overall profile to truly expand as he continues to physically mature. Champion will continue to be one of the more polished arms within the class as his feel for three pitches and simple operation exemplify that.


Anthony Tralongo, 3B, (Fla.)

Key Stats: .362-0-23/ .959 OPS

Short Story: Consistent performer throughout his PG career, has hit .478 over the course of five seasons and continually hits at every stop. Advanced hit tool with easy juice. Versatile defender with strong glove and athleticism.

Big Moment: Tralongo was named the 2019 PG Player of The Year after hitting .537 and driving in 54 runs. The two-time PG Select Baseball Festival participant also accumulated 32 extra-base hits and scored 73 runs.

Bold Prediction: The uncommitted 2024 grad continues to hit and hit some more. Tralongo’s offensive acumen has been his carrying tool, look for him to take the next step defensively and solidify himself amongst the top of this class.


Tanner Waldrop, 3B, (Ala.)

Key Stats: .420 AVG/ 1.081 OPS

Short Story: Athletic, well-proportioned frame with offensive upside and the makings of an impact corner infielder at the next level. Immense amounts of untapped potential with a smooth left-handed stroke.

Big Moment: Impressed at the 2020 14U National Showcase with a well-rounded, projectable overall package. Showed big-time arm strength across the diamond during the defensive portion and an intriguing offensive prowess that projects well. Named to the 2020 14U PG Select Festival upon this performance.

Bold Prediction: Waldrop continues to evolve his game with addition of strength and maturity. The smooth left-handed stroke starts to develop legitimate power and he continues to showcase his athleticism and arm strength in the field.


Thomas Bly, 3B, (Fla.)
6-4/195, R/R
Commitment: Louisville
PG Events: 14
Key Stats: .400-4-28

Short Story: Physical specimen already with massive power potential and sound defensive skill set. High-level two-way potential with loads of projection on both sides of the ball.

Big Moment: Bly had a strong summer season and carried it over to the fall rather seamlessly. Hit .545 with two home runs at the 2020 WWBA Freshman World Championship’s for a talented Top Tier Americans squad that made it to the Round of 8.

Bold Prediction: The Louisville commit continues to push his way further up the rankings as he showcases the immense offensive profile we’ve come to see, while also expanding his two-way potential. Look for Bly to be part of the ranking’s discussion often throughout his prep career.


Carson Messina, 3B, (S.C.)
6-1/200, R/R
Commitment: South Carolina

Key Stats: .343-0-11/ .912 OPS

Short Story: Sturdy, physical 6-foot-1 frame with a strong lower half that bodes well for future projection. Solid defensive skills at the hot corner with offensive upside and power potential. Huge two-way potential with a fastball already in the upper-80s.

Big Moment: Really stood out on both sides of the ball at the 2020 WWBA Freshman World Championship for Canes National. Hit .350 during the event with nine RBI, while running his fastball up to 88 mph. Punched out 10 hitters over his two outings.

Bold Prediction: Look for Messina to continue standing out on both sides of the ball. A corner infielder, power bat profile with the chance to be a true a two-way star when all things are said and done.


Jax Phillips, 3B/1B, (Ga.)

Key Stats: .467-1-28

Short Story: Vastly projectable 6-foot-4 frame with long-term power potential, solid defensive acumen at multiple positions and a strong arm. Huge two-way potential that will continue to rise.

Big Moment: Phillips has made a steady rise throughout his expansive PG event career. The Georgia commit has been a consistent performer at every stage of his ascend, profiling long term as a big-bodied corner infielder with the potential to hit for power, solid defensive skill set and a big arm.

Bold Prediction: Look for him to add more strength and tap into some of the aforementioned power potential we’ve seen. Doubles should start turning into home runs as he physically matures. A steady uptick on the mound will only add more intrigue to his prospect profile.

Nic Abraham, 1B, (Calif.)

Key Stats: .444 AVG/ .524 OBP/ 1.024 OPS

Short Story: Extra-large frame with long levers, athleticism and vast projection. High-level offensive upside with smooth left-handed stroke and raw power potential. Big time two-way projection.

Big Moment: Stood out at 2020 West Coast Prospect Showcase in all facets of his game. Showed impressive athleticism at first base during the defensive workout, while translating the aforementioned power potential into game action with a home run. Also flashed immense upside on the mound by running his fastball up to 86 mph and feel for two secondary offerings.

Bold Prediction: Abraham takes the next step in his development, adds strength to his frame and starts his ascend up the rankings. Huge two-way potential with massive intrigue from an offensive standpoint.

Gut Feel Risers

Kale Fountain, 3B/1B, (Neb.)
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Florida State commit has one of the more intriguing two-way profiles with the class. Will certainly continue to add strength to an already imposing frame and expand upon his impressive present set of tools.

Elbert Craig, 1B, (Texas)
Craig is a physical presence at the plate with strong hands and the ability to impact the baseball with authority. Simple, repeatable stroke that remains compact despite his immense present power. Huge power ceiling.

Michael Yeager, 3B, (Conn.)
The Virginia commit combines physical projection with huge power potential and immense two-way upside. Look for Yeager to continue evolving his game and expanding his tools as he gains strength and matures.

Zachary Hopper, 3B, (Fla.)
Ultra-projectable two-way prospect with plenty of room to add more strength and fill out. Smooth, fluid actions as a primary infielder with solid glove work and athleticism. On the mound is where he really projects, as he will surely see an uptick in velocity as he continues to mature.

William Hampton, 1B, (Ga.)
Strong, durable-framed first baseman that has been a consistent performer throughout his career. The 2019 13U Select Festival participant implores his strong lower half to leverage baseballs to the pull side. Potential two-way talent that has run his fastball up to 85 mph from the left side.

Matthew Kosuda, 3B, (N.J.)
Kosuda has continued to improve each time out, while adding loads of strength to his projectable frame over the past year. Should really start to tap into his gap-to-gap power potential, while showcasing his improved arm strength and defensive acumen.

This weekend, 11 teams will take the field for the 2026 17U BCS Challenge, a three-day event that brings together programs from across the country for a full slate of pool play and bracket action. With games beginning Friday and a champion crowned Sunday, the format leaves little room for slow starts, making every inning important from the opening pitch. The fifth annual PG City of Palms Championship is set to take place in Fort Myers, Florida, from June 19-22, featuring teams from the 15U-18U age divisions. A model of consistency on the mound making starts in January through May for Fresno City. Worked over 89 innings on the mound and made 14 starts where he threw at least 5 innings. As summer travel season continues to ramp up, more than 150 teams from 13-17u from all over the nation will meet in East Cobb as they look to showcase their talents and compete for a trophy in the PG Southeast Select Championship. The tournament will kick off with pool play on Thursday, June 18th, and champions will be crowned following bracket play on Monday, June 22nd. The 13u division will host 23 teams from four different states in the major style tournament. The East Cobb Astros and Ninth Inning Royals will share the spotlight as the only nationally ranked teams in the field as the Astros enter the weekend as the No. 45 ranked squad and Ninth Inning falls at the No. 31 spot. 14u will also play as a major tournament for the weekend and contains 31 teams looking to compete for a trophy.
