PG Honors Pat Gillick With Philly Showcase

Perfect Game to honor Pat Gillick in new Philadelphia Showcase
By Maya Heyman

Perfect Game is bringing its elite showcase experience to Philadelphia’s FDR Park for the inaugural Philly Stars/Pat Gillick Showcase this weekend, honoring one of the greatest executives in MLB history in the city where he constructed his final of three World Series winners. The event will take place on Sunday, the same day as the DICK’S All-American Classic, taking place just across the street at Citizens Bank Park.

The showcase will allow Philadelphia-area players to gain exposure and will also honor Gillick, who has been a tremendous influence in both professional and amateur baseball.

Jered Goodwin, Vice President of Scouting Operations for Perfect Game, said the idea came naturally.

“Going to Philly made a lot of sense to honor Pat Gillick, who's been a lifer in this game and a tremendous person on and off the field,” Goodwin said.

Gillick, who has spent over six decades in baseball, served in roles from scout to general manager to team president. After building the Toronto Blue Jays from the ground up and seeing his efforts pay off with back-to-back World Series winners in 1992 and 1993, Gillick took his talents to both Baltimore and Seattle, where his 2001 Mariners set the modern-day MLB record for most wins in a season with 116.

He joined the Phillies after the 2005 season and immediately took a talented nucleus – anchored by home grown talent Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard – and did his usual fine tuning to bring the franchise its second World Series championship in 2008. Gillick retired after that season and stayed on with the team as an advisor in baseball operations and a member of the ownership group.

“Every city he's been involved in, you know, has just kind of been a magnet for him,” Goodwin said. “He’s won in some way, shape or form everywhere.”

Even as a high-level executive, his commitment to amateur baseball never faltered.

Dennis Gilbert, Perfect Game Commissioner and a longtime friend of Gillick’s, recalled Gillick continuing to scout high school players regardless of how high he climbed up the baseball ladder.

“Even when he was a general manager, and after he was a general manager, Pat Gillick would go and watch amateurs play,” Gilbert said. “It has always been his passion.”

Gillick’s impact extends beyond his role in scouting. His generosity and commitment to baseball at every level make him an ideal honoree for this event. In 2003, Gilbert created the Professional Scouts Foundation, which held annual fundraising dinners to help support scouts who have provided longtime service to the game but may have fallen on financial hard times due to illness, retirement or the non-renewal of their contracts. A champion of scouts in his own right, Gillick stood by Gilbert’s side every step of the way.

“When I was working the Scouts Foundation, Pat was my right-hand man,” Gilbert said. “He was so helpful putting that event together each year and working it with me. He is a very charitable guy, very smart guy, very well respected.”

While Sunday’s event was originally meant to be a youth camp, the idea turned into a showcase for high school students after executives spoke with the Philly Stars, a foundation that helps Philadelphia youth.

“What they said they were missing was the exposure part of it, and that's the ingredient we could provide,” Goodwin said.

For Perfect Game, Sunday's showcase is a fitting tribute. It pairs the exposure and opportunity the organization is known for with a legacy built on exactly that same commitment to amateur players. As Gillick's name has been attached to major league teams for over 60 years, it's one more group of players that gets to feel the impact of a career spent giving back to the game at every level.

WWBA Freshman Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 James Watson (2030, Canton, Ga.) showed the two-way upside to start bracket play for East Cobb Astros 15u. On the mound the right-handed pitcher went three innings and with three strikeouts and spread five hits and two walks for three runs. Watson works from a hybrid windup from the middle-of-the-rubber into a small heel-turn and an around-the-belt leg lift before using drop-and-drive back leg mechanics into a longer, in-line stride down the mound. Showed some feel to get extension down the mound. The hands separate into a moderate arm action before accelerating through from an over-the-top arm angle. The fastball ran up to 86 with arm-side run and life. Paired it with a curveball with 11-5 shape and solid two-plane break. Mixed in a change-up in the upper- 70s with some vertical depth. Competed at the top of the zone well. Athletic...

WWBA World Championship Notes: Day 1 ‘27 C Joshua Digulio (TX) opened the morning in Cacti Park with a bang. In his first at-bat of the morning, Digulio crushed an 0-2 fastball. The right-handed hitter powered a fly-ball through the Florida morning humidity off the back wall of the left field bullpen for a no-doubt solo shot. Everybody in the stadium knew it was gone as soon as he made contact. The catcher also worked a walk in his only other plate appearance. His home run was the only hit in the game, providing Texas Brigade 2027 a 1-0 win.  ‘27 MIF Xavier Martin (IL) woke up the stadium with an electric swing. The right-handed hitter was sitting dead-red on a 2-0 heater, got it, and torched it. Martin scorched a line drive all the way over the left field bullpen, as the ball cleared a near 20-foot wall and bounced onto the concourse. It was a two-run shot for the...
