Midseason Collegiate All Americans

We’re through the midway point of the college season, and while it’s seemingly moved in the blink of an eye, it’s important too to take hold of our surroundings and realize that we’re in a return to normalcy. At this point last year the season had long been canceled, we were all stuck in quarantine, and now college baseball is back.



With the halfway point of the season upon is, it’s prudent to look back and see what some of the main storylines look like as well as hand out some midseason honors. The headlines have come from the SEC this year as the top half of the conference has been all around the Top 25, particularly the top-five, with Vanderbilt and Arkansas not letting go of their No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.

The Commodores, as the No. 1 team in the land, are Perfect Game’s 2021 Midseason Team of the Year. Vanderbilt’s strength has undoubtedly been the two horses at the top of the rotation in Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter. Looking to be the first rotation mates to go in the top-three picks of the draft since UCLA’s Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer, both arms have been downright dominant this season with perfect 7-0 records and sub-1.00 ERAs to boot.

Though it was close, Midseason Pitcher of the Year honors go to Jack Leiter, as the second-year right-hander has been nothing short of fantastic. Leiter leads the country in both ERA (0.43) and strikeouts (71) and has his signature moment of his complete game, no-hitter against South Carolina early in SEC play. The right-hander has been into the upper-90s and holds mid-90s well with four or five pitches that he uses to get a ton of swings and misses. Leiter has been must-watch television for the entire year and that doesn’t figure to change anytime soon.

The Midseason Player of the Year is the country’s leading home run hitter in South Carolina’s Wes Clarke. His batting average is only .309, but Clarke has been doing major damage with home runs and walks as his on-base percentage is a robust .460, meaning he’s basically getting on base once every two plate appearances. His OPS is 1.269 with the nation-leading 15 home runs to his name, as Clarke has parlayed his hot start in 2020 into becoming one of the most feared sluggers in the country.

Coming into 2021, we knew that the freshman class had a chance to be among the best in the history of the sport, and so far the prep class of 2020 has not disappointed. Leading the way among those talented freshmen has been Georgia Tech backstop Kevin Parada, our Midseason Freshman of the Year. Parada is a prospect, in all honesty, who likely doesn’t make it to campus in a normal year, but Coach Danny Hall had to be excited about the prospect of plugging him in the lineup every day. Parada is hitting .406 with a slugging percentage close to .700, all while playing quality defense behind the dish. He has the look of a top-half of the first round draft selection in 2022, and we’ll be watching closely to see how Parada closes the year.

Since coming to Knoxville, Coach Tony Vitello made an immediate impact on the recruiting trail, adding talented class after talented class to their roster. The transformation of the program started back in 2019 and has culminated now in 2021 with a loaded roster and a top-five current ranking in the Top 25. On the strength of the team and the various difficulties he’s had to manage around, Tony Vitello is our Midseason Coach of the Year. Liam Spence has been a revelation for the Volunteers, while he’s had to mix and match around the injury to projected Friday starter Jackson Leath, along with both Max Ferguson and Connor Pavolony. The Volunteers have emerged as a legitimate title contender and Vitello’s management has been a big reason for that.

Three hitters and three pitchers that really impressed or improved their stock at the Area Code Select at Dodger Stadium.  Gotta start with James Clark as he stole the show offensively, and right out of the gate, with a pull side home run as just the second hitter of the game.  Added a triple to the pull side again, again on the barrel.  Added a single up the middle.  Really showed exceptional feel for the barrel.  Flew out to center field on two occasions, both barreled up pretty well, with one getting lost in the sun.  I’m old and salty, so didn’t give him the double for the cycle, but he was the most impressive bat (easily) on the day.   One of the other position players that impressed, I’ve been somewhat critical of, have spoken with his travel coach a little bit about him behind the plate, but Vista Murrieta catcher Taytum...

The start of another high school season is right around the corner in a handful of states and with that, as always, comes our Preseason High School Top-50. A whopping twenty states are represented in the initial Top-50, a number that is staggering when you look at the amount of depth some of these rosters have across the nation. Leading the group is St. John Bosco (CA), a team that brought home a CIF Southern D1 title in 2025 and bring back a strong group of seniors to look to repeat. Stoneman Douglas (FL) is a name most people should know by now in the high school ranks and comes in as our preseason #2 team, looking to win their sixth straight state championship in Florida. Orange Lutheran (CA) had a good case for preseason #1 but come it an No. 3, bringing a roster with seven seniors ranked inside the top-200 in the country to the table.
