Matt Wallner, Southern Miss
Wallner has enjoyed a huge collegiate career so far, hitting the ground running as a freshman and nearly matching his productivity as a sophomore. For as good as he’s been as an offensive player his big arm strength gives him intriguing potential on the mound as well, but so far he has received limited looks as a pitcher. At 6-foot-5, 220-pounds he looks every part of a big league outfielder with a big and strong athletic body and room to add even more strength/weight moving forward.

A lefthanded hitter, Wallner hits from an open stance with a small stride into his hand load. He makes consistent hard contact as the ball really jumps off of his bat, generating good bat speed with an easy and effortless swing and good extension. He has the strength in his hands and wrists and leverage in his swing for future plus power at the next level. Wallner displays solid strike zone judgement and good plate coverage, although he does have the tendency to get caught looking with called third strikes. When the bat does leave his shoulder he seldom misses, as shown in his very first at-bat in Southern Miss’ three-game series against Louisiana Tech, hitting a three-run home run. He had five total hits in the series and all of them came off the bat loudly.

Wallner’s arm strength serves him well in right field and he’s a more than capable defender, making all of the plays he should. He’s not especially fleet of foot but runs well enough for his size. And while he’s not a base-stealing threat he moves well enough on the basepaths going from first to third.
