Cape Cod League Notebook: July 18

Brandon Shannon | Fr. | RHP | Louisville | Bourne Braves 

The freshman right-hander possesses arguably the most electric arm on the Cape, pairing a lean, projectable frame with plenty of room to continue adding strength. Shannon worked an effortless 96-98 mph throughout the outing with premium arm speed. His mid-80s slider generates plenty of swing-and-miss, while his 92-93 mph power changeup gives him a quality third offering to neutralize left-handed hitters. After flashing premium stuff during his freshman season at Louisville, Shannon has carried that arsenal into the summer and possesses the type of arm talent to develop into a Day 1 draft prospect as he continues refining his command and overall polish. 
 

Josiah Overbeek | Fr. | 1B | Mississippi State | Bourne Braves 



Overbeek is coming off an impressive freshman season at Army before making the move to Mississippi State. The left-handed hitter possesses significant raw power and consistently impacts the baseball while using the entire field. As a freshman, he slashed .314 with 17 home runs and 56 walks, earning Freshman All-American honors while also making 15 appearances on the mound, going 5-0 with five saves over 24.2 innings. His blend of strength, plate discipline, and offensive upside makes him an exciting bat to follow, while the makeup developed during his time at West Point should serve him well as he transitions into SEC competition. 

Jacob Lee | So. | C | VCU | Brewster Whitecaps 

Lee has established himself as one of the premier offensive catchers in the country through his first two collegiate seasons. The right-handed hitter possesses legitimate pull-side power, highlighted by a towering home run over the left-field scoreboard I saw, while consistently driving the baseball with authority. After earning Freshman All-American and Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honors in 2025, Lee followed it with another 17-home run campaign as a sophomore, giving him 34 career home runs in just two seasons at VCU. His impact power, physicality, and consistent offensive production make him one of the top catching prospects in the country. 

Blaine Brown | OF/LHP | Tennessee | Brewster Whitecaps 

One of the more unique prospects in the 2027 class, Brown is a physical 6-foot-5, 207-pound two-way talent whose bat is the clear carrying tool. The left-handed hitter generates easy plus power with leverage and strength through the zone, finishing his first season at Tennessee slashing .240/.308/.467 with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs in SEC play. While he projects primarily as a hitter at the next level, Brown's upside on the mound is impossible to ignore, as the left-hander has been up to 98-99 mph with premium arm strength. The offensive profile drives the value, but having a near triple-digit fastball in the back pocket makes Brown one of the most fascinating prospects in the 2027 draft class. 
 

Peyton Lee | RHP | Arkansas | Wareham Gatemen 

Lee is a polished right-hander with a clean, repeatable delivery and plenty of projection remaining. The fastball currently works 91-93 mph with more velocity still in the tank as he continues to mature physically. His best secondary is an advanced changeup that features quality depth with the ability to land it against both left- and right-handed hitters while attacking both sides of the plate with it. He rounds out the arsenal with a low-to-mid-80s slider that complements the fastball/changeup combination. His pitchability, athleticism, and remaining physical upside point toward another jump in stuff. 

Noah Coy | OF | Notre Dame | Cotuit Kettleers 

Coy is an athletic left-handed hitter with an exciting blend of bat speed, power, and run-producing ability. He generates easy carry to the pull side while showing the strength to drive the ball to all fields, giving him legitimate middle-of-the-order upside. Coy enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign at Notre Dame, slashing .327/.413/.633 with 17 home runs, 58 RBIs, 66 hits, and 24 doubles, establishing himself as one of the ACC's most dangerous offensive threats. Defensively, he moves well in the outfield, and his blend of offensive impact, athleticism, and upside makes him an exciting follow heading into his draft year. 
 

Reid Howard | INF | Virginia | Y-D Red Sox 

Howard is a high-energy infielder who impacts the game in all phases with a fundamentally sound, polished skill set. The right-handed hitter consistently barrels baseballs with a line-drive approach, controls the strike zone well, and uses the entire field. He turned in another productive season at Western Kentucky, slashing .302/.419/.419 with 39 hits, 20 runs, 17 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 37 games before committing to Virginia. Defensively, Howard brings athleticism, reliable hands, and the versatility to remain on the left side of the infield. His bat-to-ball skills, instincts, and defensive value give him the profile of a high-floor prospect with room for continued offensive growth. 

Tate Carey | RHP | Michigan | Chatham Anglers 

Carey is a strong, physical right-hander with a tighter arm action and a polished four-pitch mix that projects well moving forward. The fastball sat 91-93 mph, touching 94, with more velocity still to come. He paired it with a tight 82-84 mph slider that showed the ability to miss barrels, an 83 mph changeup with quality separation off the fastball, and an upper-70s curveball that featured quality depth and played well off the fastball at the top of the zone. His blend of present stuff, feel for all four pitches, and remaining projection makes him an intriguing arm to watch in Ann Arbor.

The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. 2026 MLB Draft Signing Deadline Recap

As of Monday at 5 p.m. ET, the 2026 MLB Draft is officially complete. The signing deadline has passed, meaning we now know every team’s finalized draft class and exactly how much each player signed for. Entering the draft, it was clear there was a distinct top tier consisting of Roch Cholowsky, Grady Emerson, and Vahn Lackey. That separation became even more evident once contracts were signed. Cholowsky became the first player in draft history to sign for more than $10 million, agreeing to a record-setting $10,347,500 bonus with the White Sox. Emerson set a new high school signing bonus record at $9,747,500, the second-largest bonus ever awarded to a draft pick. Lackey rounded out the trio with a $9,497,500 bonus, the third-largest signing bonus in MLB Draft history. Those weren’t the only records set. Excel Blue Wave National wasn’t leaving Hoover empty-handed.  At least, that was the message head coach Wes Henderson gave his team.  After a summer filled with strong performances but without a tournament title to show for them, Excel Blue Wave National entered the 2026 15U Perfect Game Hoover Classic with one more opportunity to finish the season the way they wanted.  This time, they left no doubt.  Excel Blue Wave National defeated East Coast Sox 2029 Victus, 12-0 in the championship game, combining a balanced offensive attack with a strong performance on the mound to secure their first tournament title of the summer.  “It’s been a special group,” Coach Henderson said. “They fought really hard, and they played really well this summer, and this is the first championship that we’ve been able to bring home. After a long summer of baseball, Excel Blue Wave National had one final opportunity to end it the way every team hopes to.  Together, having fun, and as champions. Excel Blue Wave National closed their summer with a 13-9 victory over Excel Blue Wave American – Morrison to capture the 2026 16U Perfect Game Hoover Classic championship. In a game that required contributions throughout the lineup and seven innings of competition, the Excel Blue Wave National relied on the same qualities and approach that had carried the group all summer. The team spent their early weeks learning where players fit best, building chemistry and searching for the combination that would allow them to play their best baseball. Evan Brand (2027, Acworth, Ga.) has been solid at the plate all summer and did not slow down late in the summer. This week, Brand was able to hit just under the .700 mark and tallied three extra base hits, including a homer. The switch hitter has a fluid barrel path with plus feel for the barrel to all fields. The lower half also moves with some rhythm, and the switch hitting ability with the accuracy to the barrel provides plenty of intrigue. The middle infielder is committed to Georgia Tech.
