Bryce Elder, Texas
Texas ran their Friday night starter to the mound as they opened conference play in 2019 at home against a ranked Texas Tech squad. Although he had been dominant early in the season coming into this game, he had inconsistent results, and left after five innings with his Longhorns behind in the contest of what would turn out to be an eventual 4-3 win for Texas.

At 6-foot-2, 220-pounds, the barrel-chested Elder is what many baseball observers would term as a “Texas Righthander.” He was clocked consistently in the 90-92 mph range with his fastball, showing impressive riding life. Elder also mixed in a sharp-breaking 85-87 mph slider and an even better tight-spinning 12-to-6 breaking curveball.

After two innings Elder was pitching well but ended up giving up a three-spot in the third, which came after he had recorded two outs in the frame. His control escaped him at that point of the game, walking the next three Texas Tech hitters and then allowing back-to-back run-scoring singles. Elder was able to right the ship and pitch through the fifth inning after throwing exactly 100 pitches.
