Top Talent On Display at 17u BCS

The 21st annual 17U BCS National Championship brings together some of the nation’s top programs and elite 2027 prospects to Fort Myers, Florida, from July 17-21. With dozens of Division I commits and nationally ranked prospects set to compete, here are some of the players expected to make the biggest impact throughout the weekend.




For Florida Burn 2027 Scout, which is currently ranked #5 nationally Florida Burn will be No. 107-ranked outfielder RJ Shields and No. 129-ranked third baseman Braedon Mackay.

One of the premier two-way prospects in the tournament, Shields, brings one of the strongest arms in the field. The Venice, Florida native has run his fastball up to 95 mph while also showcasing a 98 mph throwing arm from the outfield, making him a weapon on both sides of the ball. On the mound this season, the Mississippi State commit has struck out 29 batters in 15.1 innings, holding opponents to a .237 batting average.

Power and size define Mackay, the No. 1 third baseman in Florida. He brings an imposing 6-foot-4 frame to Florida Burn. Mackay has put together a strong season at the plate, hitting .312 with an .883 OPS and five doubles through 22 games. He has also shown the versatility to contribute on the mound with a fastball that has reached 89 mph. The Sarasota native will be staying in his home state for college as he is committed to Florida.

Florida Burn opens tournament play at 8 a.m. on Friday against CBU 2027 United Fleming at Fort Myers High School.

Few players in the field possess No. 46-ranked shortstop Hector Green’s athleticism. Green, one of the top uncommitted prospects in the tournament, will play for the reigning champions Puerto Rico Scout Team. He enters the tournament as one of the most dynamic athletes in the 2027 class, combining elite speed with advanced defensive tools, posting a 6.30-second 60-yard dash, 95 mph infield velocity, 96 mph outfield velocity and a 97 mph exit velocity. At the plate this season, Green is hitting .327 with an .854 OPS and 16 stolen bases in 50 games, consistently creating offense with both his bat and his speed. With his explosive athleticism, defensive ability and impact on the basepaths, Green is one of the most exciting players to watch this weekend.

Green will take the field alongside the Puerto Rico Scout Team beginning on Friday at 10:15 a.m. on Field 1 at 5 Plex against Indiana Mustangs Bennie Boys 17U American.

The next two players to watch have played together their entire lives. Twin brothers Derek and Ryan Yormack enter as the No. 51 and No. 90-ranked players, respectively. Right-handed pitcher Derek Yormack headlines one of the tournament’s most talented rosters as the No. 5 right-handed pitcher in the 2027 class and No. 1 player in his home state of New York. Standing 6-foot-3, Derek Yormack has run his fastball up to 95 mph while featuring a polished three-pitch mix, helping him post a 3.11 ERA with 11 strikeouts in nine innings this season. A true two-way prospect, Yormack is also a switch-hitter with plenty of offensive upside, highlighted by a 97 mph exit velocity.

Ranked as the No. 5 first baseman in the 2027 class and No. 3 player in New York, Ryan Yormack has established himself as one of the top power bats in the field. He enters the tournament after slashing .320/.500/.680 with a 1.180 OPS and three home runs in 12 games this season. He also boasts a 100 mph exit velocity, showcasing the raw power that has made him one of the premier offensive prospects in the class.

While they will be playing for USG/Elev8 Rawlings National Team this weekend, both brothers are committed to Vanderbilt, where they will continue their baseball careers together.

Rhode Island’s top-ranked 2027 prospect will also be in attendance this weekend in No. 116-ranked right-handed pitcher William Haggerty. The Florida commit enters the tournament as one of the top arms in the field, having run his fastball up to 95 mph while putting together an impressive season on the mound, posting a 1.56 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 18 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .194 batting average. Haggerty has also made an impact offensively in limited action, batting .833 with a 2.429 OPS, two home runs and four RBI across four games. His combination of velocity and two-way production makes him a key contributor for No. 78-ranked Scorpions 2027 Scout.

Shortstop Braylon Sheffield enters the tournament ranked No. 122 nationally. The Fort Myers native will have the opportunity to play in his hometown this weekend. Sheffield has put together an outstanding season at the plate, slashing .415/.525/.785 with a 1.310 OPS, four home runs and 25 RBI in 29 games. The Virginia commit also brings speed to the lineup with four stolen bases while flashing defensive ability at shortstop, highlighted by an 85 mph infield velocity. He will play for SWFL Rockies Scout 2027, currently ranked No. 23 in the nation.

Action begins Friday as teams open pool play, battling through five days of competition. The tournament will conclude Tuesday with the championship game scheduled for 10:15 a.m. at Lee Health Sports Complex.

The landscape of the MLB Draft continues to evolve each and every year. What teams value at the top of the draft can change based on the strength of a particular class, shifts in player development philosophy, and, perhaps most importantly, the way organizations evaluate risk and upside. Some trends are subtle, while others become impossible to ignore when viewed across multiple years. For this study, I set out to answer one question: What player profiles do teams value at the top of the draft? To answer it, I analyzed the Top-100 picks from each of the last six drafts (2021-2026). That gives us 600 total selections to examine and provides a large enough sample to identify both the profiles that have remained consistently popular and those that have gained or lost significant ground. 2027 Top 100 Draft Board  Current Favorite: SS Dylan Seward, Norco HS (Calif.) In our first iteration of the 2027 Draft Board, Norco shortstop Dylan Seward ranks No. 1 overall. The switch-hitter is an ultra-twitchy player with a lot to like on both sides of the ball. He is a supreme athlete that should stick up the middle. Fifty-Four teams, competing across three divisions in the 14u - 18u age classifications opened up our Fall schedule playing in a five game showcase style format. For the several college coaches in attendance, they were able to get quality looks at numerous uncommitted 27’ and 28’ graduation year class athletes, as well as having the opportunity to watch some of the quality younger athletes as they put their talent on display.
