Coming into Texas Tech’s second game against Texas, the season for Klian had not been what he or his club was expecting with an 0-2 mark and an ERA just north of 9.00. As a result the 6-foot-4 junior righthander was especially looking to put together a solid effort and help his club even the series after the Longhorns took game one on Friday night when two costly errors gift-wrapped a 4-3 victory for 13th-ranked Texas.

Kilian was nails from the get-go and really could not have pitched much better. The long and lean hurler used smooth and repeatable mechanics and a quick pace to pound the strike zone with plus stuff for seven highly effective innings.  His whippy arm action, which incorporates a long takeaway and extended finish, helped him throw his solid four-pitch mix at the Longhorns throughout his quality one-hit outing. He only walked two UT hitters on the day while striking out four.

His ability to work fast and mix-and-match his well-commanded heavy fastball that touched 94 mph and sat consistently between 90 and 92 mph, a tight spinning 11-to-5 breaking slider at 82-83 mph, a sound 12-to-6 breaking curveball (72-74 mph) and an advanced changeup (82-84 mph) kept the struggling Texas offense at bay throughout the contest. His Red Raider teammates finally broke through in the top of the eighth, plating three runs, allowing the lanky Kilian to earn his first victory of the season.
