Liberty at South Florida

You couldn’t have asked for a better setting for opening weekend of the D-I season than those in Tampa. Temperatures were in the 60’s and 70’s all weekend with the sun shining bright on Sunday afternoon for the series finale between Liberty and South Florida.

These two teams offered a little bit of everything. There was a ton of offense and a 11-10 walkoff win for USF on Friday, followed by a pitching dominated game on Saturday in which Liberty shutout the Bulls 4-0. On Sunday it looked like USF had the game and series in hand, but after being down five runs in the seventh inning, Liberty continued to battle and got within a single run before South Florida shut things down for good to preserve a 6-5 win and securing the series two games to one.

While this series may not have had the top-of-the-draft board type talent, there were still some very solid and intriguing prospects with an assortment of profiles in both dugouts.

For Liberty, players like freshman outfielder and leadoff hitter D.J. Artis, senior shortstop Dalton Britt, junior righthanded pitcher Parker Bean and junior left fielder Andrew Yacyk all impressed with their passion and aggressive style of play.

South Florida has a young and very talented team. They started four freshmen in every game and two at premium positions with Garrett Zech in center field and Coco Montes at shortstop. Left fielder Chris Chatfield started every game of the series as well and David Villar, who had a fantastic opening night after going 4-for-5 on Friday with a home run in his first college at-bat, drew the start at third base Friday and Saturday before fellow newcomer Michael Koenig got the call on Sunday at the hot corner.

While there will be more in-depth scouting reports and video of the USF roster in the coming weeks, sophomore second baseman Kevin Merrell really stood out with his all-around game and plus-plus speed.

Kevin Merrell, 2B, South Florida
If you like players who can do just about everything on the field, then Merrell is for you. He presents a ton of athleticism to go along with his advanced baseball IQ and feel for the game. He has soft hands and plays the infield light on his feet. His actions are smooth and the hands are sure and Merrel can range well to either side and showed very efficient footwork around the bag. He has the type of skill-set that allows for a very versatile player as it’s easy envisioning him being able to play almost anywhere on the diamond and play it well.

Offensively, Merrel handles the bat very well and is an ideal leadoff hitter as he shows patience and commands the strike zone. He also has a plan at the plate and has the tools to execute it. Merrell’s swing is quick and stays level allowing for consistent contact and he is willing and able to use the whole field. A near elite runner, Merrel continuously put pressure on the defense with his speed. Whether he was laying down a bunt or hitting the ball towards a hole on the infield, Merrell busted out of the box and beat a few of them for infield singles. He was timed in the 3.7 range on a jail break bunt from the left side and just above 4.0 seconds flat on a regular break. USF will have this luxury at the top of their order all season long.
