No. 1 Florida 4, Florida Gulf Coast 2

The consensus No. 1 team in Division I baseball Florida Gators successfully opened their 2016 campaign with a 4-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast in front of a sold-out crowd (and opening night record) of 5,778 people at McKethan Stadium.

About 30 to 40 of those in attendance were scouts from various professional organizations including numerous crosscheckers and directors. Such large scouting contingents will be the norm in Gainesville, as the Gators lay claim to three possible first-round picks in the 2016 draft class.

However, it was far from an easy day at the office for the University of Florida as Florida Gulf Coast put the Gators under pressure in the early going.

One of those aforementioned possible first-round selections, junior righty Logan Shore, toed the rubber on Friday night. Shore, a well-built 6-foot-2, 215 pounder from Coon Rapids, Minnesota, has been a workhorse for the Gators over the last two seasons and he put forth a respectable performance despite not having his best stuff.

While he generally sits in the 90-92 mph range with his fastball and touches up in the 93-94 mph range at times, Shore’s heater was predominately in the 88-90 mph range for much of Friday night, touching 91-92 more consistently in the first couple of frames of his five inning start.
