Scout Stories: Part 1

Best Game I Saw:

Feel like I may put this every year (don’t fact check me), but the PG All American Classic is always up there, I’m sure I could pick a game where I saw Seth Hernandez shove for Corona here too, but the All American Classic is always just loaded with talent and it pretty well wraps up a long summer of baseball.  Being back at Petco Park makes it even more special as it’s simply one of my favorite venues to watch a game, and seeing a group of the top high school players in the country in that yard is simply awesome.  And to have the West squad win, just makes it that much better (Yes, I’m a left coast homer).  The Underclass All Star Game kicking things off has made the event even better the last few years, and gave us a taste of what to look forward to down the road.  I’m sure Kinon Bastian will have numerous big hits, but hitting a home run against top competition and in a Major League stadium, I’m sure, will be a memory he’ll never forget.

Best Tournament Performance I Saw:

This was the first year for the Champions Cup at Westmont College, and BPA impressed in many facets.  Logan Schmidt shoved on the mound and then hit a home run, Preston Cole and Dyson Grant added home runs, but it was a Florida kid that REALLY stood out, and an underclassmen at that.  Jake Cueto was simply an on base machine for BPA with 4 walks and EIGHT hits over the weekend.  Committed to Miami, Cueto was an on base machine and also swiped four bags.  It wasn’t just this tournament that Cueto swung the bat well at, he followed up his Champions Cup performance by going to the Underclass WWBA and hit 636, and 700 at WWBA.  Just a huge summer for the outfielder.

Favorite Single Game Moment:

Feels like high school kids are getting to play more and more in MLB stadiums, so some of these moments may not feel quite as special, but I’m pretty sure Kinon Bastian (being from Florida) had never played at Petco prior to the 2025 PG All Star Game.  I’m sure he’ll remember ambushing the hanger for a solo home run, pretty cool for an underclassmen.  And if he forgets, he can always come back here to watch it :).

Biggest Showcase Breakout Performer: Dylan Wherry, RHP/1b, Livermore HS Class of 2026

Not sure if it was the ‘Biggest’ breakout, but my memory isn’t great, so I’ll go with a kid from the most recent showcase in Dylan Wherry out of Livermore High School.  If I’m at a school that trusts our development, this is the type of kid I’m targeting.  BIG, 6’6” kid that struck out 5 over three hitless innings of work.  Lacked present velocity, but has been up to 84 in our events, and it was a cold day in Stockton, so it wasn’t the most optimal conditions to be throwing.  But 6’6”, with a fastball with natural cut is a good place to start. He showed feel for the breaking ball with good shape too.  Currently uncommitted.

Pick to Click: Tosh Whitworth, OF/RHP, Santa Barbara HS Class of 2027

Scrolls down the rankings…. Who do i like that’s ranked pretty low….. Can’t take a chalk pick here…. How bout 113 in California for the class of 2027?  Tosh Whitworth out of Santa Barbara High School?!  Have they had a DUDE out of Santa Barbara HS since Kevin Gowdy (in 2016).  I don’t know if he’s an arm or a bat yet, but there’s plenty of time to figure that out.  I’ll take the 6’5” frame.  Moves well for his size and shows raw power in the box.  So arm for RF or may end up on the bump, I’ll take it.  Currently uncommitted.

-Steve Fiorindo

Best Game I Saw

Lynx Scout Team 2027 and Dirtbags National 16U duked it out in a nine inning affair during the 16u WWBA, earning the “best game” spot for myself. Holden Kafes and Aiden Rivera combined for 8.1 innings and just four hits allowed, with Michael Mendoza and Jayden Serna proving to be spark plugs for the offense. The Dirtbags’ arms were just as good, as Conner Horner, Kaden Parker and Peyton Crews scattered four hits over 8.2 combined. It was a 12 round brawl and each club scored a knockdown in the final inning, but the Lynx were able to hold on and prevailed 5-4.

Best Tournament Performance I Saw

I am going to roll with Connor Salerno and what he did under the lights in Jupiter for Wow Factor. The PG All-Star and Mississippi State commit would fire off three scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, running his fastball to 96-mph and utilizing the curve/change whenever he wanted. It was an overpowering show of force, tallying up eleven whiffs over the course of his start. The one hit he allowed was a change that ran into the barrel a bit and was left belt high, but outside of that one pitch, he was flawless.

Favorite Single Game Moment

It doesn’t happen often, and when it does it gets your attention and you can’t really stop thinking about it. David Ojeda going big fly over the batter’s eye on Field 1 at East Cobb was my favorite moment of the year, and the emotion he showed rounding the bases after was the cherry on top. Ojeda has tools and they show up in a game setting often. He is capable of the long ball, as evident by this moment. Still uncommitted, someone is getting a steal for their program with Ojeda.

Biggest Showcase Breakout Performer

Maceo White came to the Uncommitted Select Games and showed off a brand new tool shed compared to what we were once familiar with for him, as he would run a 6.45 with 89-mph arm strength from the outfield and showed budding power in the batter’s box from the right side. Lean, wiry and twitchy, the offensive profile is going to continue trending up over the next year as he continues to fill out and add even more pop. He already can get the ball in the air to pull at a good clip, and he showed over the fence impact at a surprising rate this year. In our most recent ranking refresh, he would jump to the #170 overall prospect in the country and secure a commitment to the University of Vanderbilt. He is going to be a name that area scouts will be checking in on when the time comes.

Pick To Click

I’ll stay local here within my home state of Georgia and pick out a prospect that is not inside the Top 500… I’ll be rolling with Ryan Trout to trend up over the next calendar year. The velocity progression has been steady and healthy, as he continues to grow into his wiry frame and add velocity to his offerings. He has an innate feel to spin the baseball, along with a clean and repeatable arm action. He has always had pitchability as well. It doesn’t take too much projecting to see this getting better in a calendar year. UCF did a great job securing a commitment from Trout.

Best Game I Saw

I was able to scout a ton of great tournament games out west in my region, but my overall favorite was a Jupiter playoff game where I was able to take in some high-level talent that’s outside of my area. It was a Round of 32 matchup between the Reds Scout Team and Hawaii Elite 2G National. It was a back-and-forth affair where the Reds ended up taking over late for the victory. It’s a game I tend to go back to a lot because of the amount of first time player looks I got that I ended up becoming big fans of after. Prospects like TJ McQuillan, Dylan Bowen and Jack Brenner were very impressive that day at the plate and broke out in big ways that whole week. Hawaii players Noah Sham, Taye Marxen and Kaikea Patoc-Young also got on my radar after their performances, and they definitely elevated their prospect stock within Hawaii and Nationally.

Best Tournament Performance

It was a smaller four game sample, but the offensive week that Jack Leeper had at the UBC West this past summer continues to come to mind when thinking about some of the better tourney performances I took in. He was 9-for-13 where seven of those nine were of the extra base variety. He cemented himself that week as a clear T100 player, and that continued into the rest of the summer and fall circuit with many other strong showings. There is a lot to like with the way it looks in the box. He’s an advanced athlete with present strength that uses a simple and balanced swing operation where he creates good angles in the path allowing him to frequently hit it hard and drive it in the air. Simply one of my favorite players in the ‘27 class. Stanford commit.

Favorite Single Game Moment

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as anyone who was at PG National this year remembers Savion Sims’ outing where he hit a 100 with the fastball three times in his two-shutout innings of work. The 6-foot-8 righty came out pumping fuel within a relatively balanced and repeatable operation down the mound where he didn’t appear to exert any extra effort than what we’ve seen in the past to reach that velocity.  His slider and changeup were quite effective that day as well to go with his plus heater. He further cemented himself as one of the premier arms in the class after that outing that I probably will never forget.

Biggest Showcase Breakout Performer:

Colton Fitzgibbon got on our staff’s radar at the UBC West but he firmly put himself in the T100 national conversation after his standout showcase performance at the West Academic in Arizona. He ran an absurd 6.26 60-yd dash where his double plus speed then translated into the OF with athletic actions to and through the baseball along with an advanced arm for his level getting off 90 mph accurate pulldowns. Then he followed that up with a loud batting practice where he displayed serious bat and hand speed within his twitchy left-handed stroke where there’s no doubt in my mind he’s going to seriously impact the baseball sooner rather than later. It was one of those showings where you knew you were seeing something special as it was happening. Entered as a #500 rank that day and is now the #76 player in the '28 class.

Pick To Click

Elyjah Mason’s only 2025 PG tournament appearance was also at the UBC West and it wasn’t a strong one, but I’m still buying stock in the 6-foot-3, 170-pound uber athletic shortstop. It’s real actions on the dirt where the athleticism really shines with his quickness, footwork and glovework. Then it’s a smooth and whippy left-handed stroke where his overall offensive skill has continued to get better and better with several indications of that during s strong HS fall ball season. I’m betting on a breakout spring season from him at Huntington Beach where he’ll get significant looks from our scouting staff all season long.

Best Game I Saw

Perhaps one of the best games I saw all year was the playoff matchup between Lovejoy and The Colony back in May. Trey Rangel and Logan Corley both toed the rubber going head to head in a matchup in what was unforgettable for both of them. Corley ended up going 10 shutout innings while striking out 11 batters. It was one of the best performances you will see at this level in a do or die game. He held a good lineup in check and gave his team an opportunity to win the game as it went 12 full innings where Lovejoy took the lead and held it then. Rangel on the other hand went 7 shutout innings while striking out 12 batters in this same game. The arm talent for Rangel is obviously as electric as it comes and it was on full display this night. He competed all game with Corley which made it a night to remember. One of the biggest games of the year for me and the pitching match up was as good as it gets.

Best Tournament Performance I Saw

Both Hudson Browning and Clyde Williams III had all time performances at the Ultimate Baseball Championship South this past Summer and worthy of reminding everyone what they did. This was the first year of the UBC in Texas and it did not disappoint. Hudson Browning more than held his own helping his team make a big run winning the championship. He finished the tournament hitting to a 529 average and belted 4 home runs to go with it across 7 games. He also drove in 11 runs and was an absolute unit on both sides of the ball. Power to all fields with strong ability to impact the baseball was on full display all week and one we did not forget. Clyde Williams also performed at a high level in this same exact tournament as he hit 588 on the week that included 3 home runs while driving in 10 runs. Williams has long been known as one of the better bats in Texas, but the power certainly came around this Summer against high level competition. He can really drive the ball line to line with absolute authority and the bat to ball is impressive. His UBC performance along with Browning’s did not go unnoticed.

Biggest Showcase Breakout Performer

There were quite a few players that stood out in showcases this year for me but perhaps the 2 most prevalent that come to mind and have shot up our rankings because of it are Cullen Scott and Ethan Johnson. Cullen Scott was up to 90 at the Sunshine South Showcase earlier this year and the velo has continued to tick up. He has good off speed that continues to improve as well. He can also really hit with power projecting the best for him in the box. Just a guy we saw at a showcase and performed well on the circuit as well. Ethan Johnson, on the other hand, recently stood out at the Lone Star Showcase this past Fall where he worked up to 90 off the bump with good off speed to go with it. He stands in at 6-foot-3 and has the starters look once he continues to add strength and fill out more. He should be a big name on the radar moving forward.

Pick to Click

Jackson Wooten is as tooled up as it gets and would not be surprising to see him really put it all together this year. The speed is undeniable as he is a plus runner across the board. The bat-to-ball ability is impressive as he hit to a 389 average this year across 36 games with 19 stolen bases. He also hit 4 homeruns, and I think more power is coming when it’s all said and done. We are talking about a potential 5 tool guy here with strong ability on both sides of the ball. Wooten should be taking a big jump this year and is my pick to click. He also recently committed to Kentucky.

Player of the Year: Asher Williams It was an incredible year for Williams that was rewarded with a trip to the 14U Select Fest, before some more impressive play in the fall. He came to the plate almost 250 times in PG tournaments throughout 2025 and reached base in well over half of them, hitting to a .500 AVG while slugging a 14U circuit best 12 bombs and driving in 113 runs. The numbers on the surface are ridiculous, but when you look at the high-level events he put them up in, it makes it even more impressive. Pitcher of the Year: Tristan Blalock Blalock earns this honor after a dominant 2025 where he struck out 85 batters in just 48.2 innings of work with a minuscule 1.58 ERA. This included several strong performances at many national level tournaments and showcases where he was able to bully some of the best hitters in the country. It’s hard not to fall in love with...

PG Draft: Gut Feel Guys

Tyler Henninger
Article Image
While we are nearing the turn of the calendar to the 2026 year, that means we are just inching closer to the beginning of the season for many high school players and college baseball is on the horizon. We are prepping for a reshuffle of the 2026 MLB Draft Board as well here amongst the PG Draft staff. But before we get to that, we sat down and have each picked a couple of players who are in the mix to get selected in a couple of different buckets.  We have prospects who could go into the Top 30 picks or so, prospects who could be selected in the Top 5 rounds, and prospects who could go inside of the Top 10 rounds. With the draft quite far down the road and a lot of re-shuffling to be done as these players play themselves into certain spots on the draft board, our scouts picked some players who fit into these “buckets” who are gut-feel guys. These are the guys that our PG...

Hitter of the Year: Landon Bonner The 2028 class saw many players from across the country take the next step in their development as they entered the High School ranks. There were huge performances from highly ranked players on the PG circuit as well as some under-the-radar guys who burst onto the scene. Landon Bonner came into Sophomore National as a Top 500 ranked player and after an impressive showing, left with all eyes on him as a rankings riser in the class. The left-handed hitting shortstop from The Colony, Texas, had a summer to remember with All-Tournament Team selections in three of his next four events culminating with a historic performance at the 2025 PG 15U WWBA National Championship. The Hebron High School prep went 20-for-24 in nine games for 5 Star Mafia 15U Black with four homeruns and 12 runs batted in. He also scored 17 runs and finished with a mind-boggling 2.500...

Hitter of the Year: Koa Romero is the Hitter of the Year for the 16u group, as he would come to every premier event of the summer and earn All-Tournament honors (Beast of the East, 16/17u WWBA, Jupiter) in every single one. Over 82 plate appearances, Romero would pump ten homeruns with forty two RBI and sixteen walks, good for a .378 average and 1.339 OPS. The performance on volume at the best events of the year pushed Romero over the edge here, as he’d hit a pair of homeruns in Jupiter (one of them at 112 EV) as an underclassmen and collect double digit hits in BOTH WWBA events with a combined six jacks over the two tournaments. It was a summer that combined performance and winning on the biggest stages for Romero. It’s a quiet left-handed swing that packs a punch. He would reap the benefits of his performances, earning a commitment to LSU and jumping to the #74 prospect in...

They dip into Mississippi to land one of the premier arms and one that’s stood out on the circuit for quite some time. It’s a fast arm and the athleticism certainly shines working down the slope. The velocity has continued to tick up over the last calendar year and reached into the low-90s towards the end of the summer. He’s confident in his changeup and the breaking ball is...

There’s a lot of talent throughout this 2026 class, filled with the big-name stars, to talent that spreads across the nation. It’s been a lot of fun seeing these prospects grow and develop over the years, from the days of watching some of these guys at the 13/14u days at events on the circuit, to now where they are all graduating seniors in 2026. There’s been new faces who have popped along the way over the years, even in 2026, where some players who were relatively undiscovered, have come out and made a name for themselves with a statement performance. Between the familiar and the new, there’s a lot of names on this list that are going to be quite regularly talked about on the circuit, and for good reason.  Whether it’s PG All-Americans or not, there’s a lot of names with superstar potential at the next level. We’ve got 14 PG All-Americans...

Best Game I Saw: The Dream NTL 18U vs. MBA Scout Team Murphy Jupiter always brings out the best, and we got fireworks from the jump. Turner Marshall gave The Dream an outstanding 4+ innings of work on the mound, holding a lethal MBA team at bay with Chance Dixon, Derrick Carter, and Ellis Appling providing an offensive spark out of the gate for the Georgia based boys. However, it was only a matter of time before the talent on the other side got going, as MBA erased a 3-run deficit in the 5th to take a 4-3 lead led by a Parker Loew HR. The Dream then took command again in the Top of the 6th, before MBA punched right back with a huge 5-run inning in the bottom half capped off by a clutch RBI single from Matthew Kerrigan, ending a wild sequence with tons of notable performances from two very competitive rosters. Nebraska Cornhuskers 2025 Highlights: The Cornhuskers were a difficult team to figure in ’25 as they finished with 33 wins, played just .500 (15-15) in the Big Ten but had some big wins at various times during the season and got hot at the right time. They knocked off then #16 Vanderbilt in the second game of the year, beat #5 Oregon State 2-out-of-3 at home in late March and then got hot at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha to win the Big Ten Tournament. They beat Michigan State in a 10-inning thriller before taking care of #4 Oregon, knocking off Penn State and then shutout #13 UCLA to punch their ticket to the Chapel Hill Regional. Head coach Will Bolt has now led his alma mater to three conference titles and three NCAA Regional appearances during his six years in Lincoln.
