Stacked Runs the Table at 17u WWBA

Following a jam-packed week of entertainment at the 17u WWBA Championships, the top nationally ranked program, USA Prime 17u National/Detroit Tigers Scout Team, faced off against Stacked Baseball 17u (No. 80 nationally) in the highly anticipated championship matchup as both teams looked to earn one of the most prestigious titles in all of travel baseball. Each talented squad entered the finale undefeated, but Stacked Baseball continued their dominance throughout the tournament, defeating the Detroit Tigers Scout Team 10-2 in mercy rule fashion to become national champions behind explosive bats and impressive pitching.

Stacked Baseball was the overwhelming top team throughout the week as the WWBA Champions outscored opponents by an absurd 117-12 during their 11-0 run.



“We got some talented kids, but we played against a little bit of Goliath over there,” Stacked Head Coach Mike Sweeney said after the championship win. “We're facing probably the most talented team in America, and yet, we just preach to them all week, play for each other, play for the love of the game, play with humility, play for your brothers in the dugout, and then we just encourage them... They came together; they became one over the week here at the WWBA, and now they're national champs.”

Louisville commit, Carter Hullett received the opening nod for Stacked Baseball in the first inning and was able to retire his opponents in order for a perfect 1-2-3 opening frame. The No. 1 ranked third baseman in the nation, Graham Keen, was the championship starting pitcher for the Tigers, and the Vanderbilt commit also pitched a scoreless inning for his respective team despite allowing a leadoff walk.

Hullett started his second inning of work with two quick outs including a punchout, but a double into the right field corner from Mississippi State commit, centerfielder Deuce Jenkins, put the Tigers first runner on base and set up an early prime opportunity with a runner in scoring position. Tigers' catcher, Broder Katke was able to put a barrel on a changeup down the middle, but the ball fell just short of the warning track, and Hullett was able to get out of the second inning with the deep flyout.

Keen began the bottom of the second by inducing a pair of weak groundouts but back-to-back bloop singles into center field put runners on the corners with two outs. Stacked was able to take advantage of a passed ball to the backstop, and Hullett scored from third to plate the first run of the ballgame and give himself some insurance on the mound. The offense was not done however as another passed ball and walk put runners on the corners once again, and chaos ensued with the runner on first putting himself in a pickle which allowed the runner from third to cross the plate without the Tigers recording an out. Keen got out of the inning with another groundout, but his squad entered the third inning in a 2-run deficit.

“It feels amazing,” Hullett said on crossing the plate for the first run and giving himself some extra comfort on the mound. “I mean, Jace knocking me in, and then passed ball taking advantage. So, I think it's just working as a team, but you know, there's individuals to success as well.”

The Tigers offense remained quiet in their third opportunity at the plate, going three up, three down for the second time this afternoon, and Hullett was able to get through his opponent’s lineup for the first time while allowing just a singular base hit.

Stacked Baseball was able to extend their lead in the top of the fourth inning as a one-out double off the wall from shortstop, Parker Leoff scored centerfielder Ricardo Hurtado from first base to make it 3-0 with a runner still in scoring position. The Tigers were able to steal a much needed second out after Stacked hitter Tanner Brown tried to stretch a single into a double, but a costly error from Tigers shortstop Carter Hadnot allowed Stacked to record a crooked number and the inning to continue. Keen was able to finally get out of the inning by forcing a groundout but his team would need to get their bats going quickly to dig themselves out of the 4-0 hole.

A hard-hit single from second baseman Chase Fuller led off the inning for the Tigers and a one-out double to the wall from Hadnot put a pair of runners in scoring position with the top first baseman in the nation, Frank Thomas III at the plate. Thomas delivered with a single up the middle, driving in two runs and cutting his teams deficit in half with only one out in the fourth. Jenkins followed up his teammate’s single with a base hit of his own to put the tying run on base. Hullett was able to escape the jam with two outs on back-to-back pitches and keep his team in the lead at 4-2.

Keen kept his team’s momentum going, pitching his fourth inning of work in an extremely efficient five pitches for his first perfect inning of the ballgame, and the Tigers came up to bat down by two with just three chances remaining.

Florida commit Jace Moran hit a small dribbler to first base to lead off the inning, but his speed helped force a wild throw from Stacked’s first baseman to reach safely. The error was no issue for Hullett however, as the righty forced three straight fly outs to prevent the Tigers from inching closer.

Stacked Baseball opened the home half of the fifth inning with a pair of singles to put runners on first and second with nobody out while looking to extend their lead and add some much-needed insurance runs. The offense was able to do just that as a two-out triple from Brown brought both runners around to score, and first baseman Camden Nishnick plated Brown with a single through the left side to make it 7-2 while entering the 6th inning.

“We're not the biggest, not the most talented, coming out here being a team and getting a good pitch and hitting it well, and giving our teams more insurance runs, getting the win felt great.” Brown said after the clutch triple.

Hullett once again kept his team’s lead intact in the 6th inning as he shoved his third perfect inning to complete a terrific championship performance, going the complete game while allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out three opponents.

“It feels amazing, but doesn't happen without the whole team,” Hullett said on his phenomenal performance against a great team. “I can only do so much, but putting up as many runs as we did, that just makes my job even easier. Just pitching to contact, getting guys to get themselves out, that's the biggest thing to do.”

No. 2 overall prospect Chase Fuller entered in relief for Keen in the 7th inning and Stacked right fielder DJ Sweeney jumped on his first pitch thrown for a leadoff double. Fuller allowed a five-pitch walk to the following batter and third baseman Brady Guth stepped to the plate with one out and two runners on base. Guth battled the count and bounced a single over the head of the infield to put his team up by seven and put the game winning run on base due to run-rule.

A walk followed by an intentional walk loaded the bases with just one out and center fielder Hurtado stepped up to the plate. Hurtado smoked the first pitch he saw into the right center gap and the game winning run crossed the plate to officially crown Smoked Baseball as the 17u WWBA Champions.

“Feels pretty good,” Hurtado said on driving in the game winning run and claiming victory. “It kind of goes to tribute of what we've been working for all summer, kind of like a big family been working for four years now. So, it's kind of cool to see that it all paid off in the end.”

Another thrilling week of Perfect Game baseball at East Cobb Baseball Complex has now officially come to an end, but the summer season is just ramping up as the 16u WWBA Championships are just around the corner with another champion being crowned the week of July 6-13.

Bryce Urban (2027, Kaukauna, Wis.) An athletic 5-foot-9, 175-pound right-handed hitter, who handled the bat well throughout the weekend while showing feel for the barrel and quality bat speed. Stays balanced throughout the operation while showing direct hands to the baseball. There is feel to rotate through the zone and keep the barrel working for an extended period, helping him consistently produce hard-hit contact. He showed the ability to impact the baseball to all fields and remained productive throughout the event. Kai Anderson (2028, Missouri City, Texas) continued his breakout stretch over the past couple of weeks with 2028 South Texas Sliders 16U Pierce. Compiled a 7-15 week with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs, driving in nine runs. Parlayed that into winning Tournament MVP. Physical presence in the box that is starting to tap into a ton of juice offensively. Tight rotation on an uphill plane with loose actions in the barrel. Doing all of this with very little swing and miss while holding it down in center field. One of the louder stretches of the summer. Trent Costales (2028, San Antonio, Texas) was excellent this week for Texas Angels 2028 Libson. Went 4-11 with two doubles and a home run. As of Monday at 5 p.m. ET, the 2026 MLB Draft is officially complete. The signing deadline has passed, meaning we now know every team’s finalized draft class and exactly how much each player signed for. Excel Blue Wave National closed their summer with a 13-9 victory over Excel Blue Wave American – Morrison to capture the 2026 16U Perfect Game Hoover Classic championship. In a game that required contributions throughout the lineup and seven innings of competition, the Excel Blue Wave National relied on the same qualities and approach that had carried the group all summer. Evan Brand (2027, Acworth, Ga.) has been solid at the plate all summer and did not slow down late in the summer. This week, Brand was able to hit just under the .700 mark and tallied three extra base hits, including a homer. The switch hitter has a fluid barrel path with plus feel for the barrel to all fields. The lower half also moves with some rhythm, and the switch hitting ability with the accuracy to the barrel provides plenty of intrigue. The middle infielder is committed to Georgia Tech.
