East World Series Scout Notes

Evan Brand (2027, Acworth, Ga.) has been solid at the plate all summer and did not slow down late in the summer. This week, Brand was able to hit just under the .700 mark and tallied three extra base hits, including a homer. The switch hitter has a fluid barrel path with plus feel for the barrel to all fields. The lower half also moves with some rhythm, and the switch hitting ability with the accuracy to the barrel provides plenty of intrigue. The middle infielder is committed to Georgia Tech.


Atley Schwarzrock (2027, Peachtree City, Ga.) has quietly put together an impressive ‘26 summer with the OPS north of 1.500 and providing plenty of pop with the right handed bat. Schwarzrock was a force all weekend, tallying five extra base hits, with two of those being homers. The middle infielder has a feel for the glove at both second and short, and the bat shows most of the pop to the pull side with loose hands and barrel whip. Schwarzrock should be a name to keep an eye on as we approach the fall, and he should be a good get for a program in the next year.



Dane Brown (2028, Homerville, Ga.) was on the barrel consistently throughout the week, tallying four extra base hits with two of those being homers. His second homer of the week was one of the loudest moments of the tournament, launching it to the pull side into the top of the trees in right. The power comes easy to the pull side for the left handed hitter, and Brown creates good leverage in the swing with separation between the hips and the hands. 


Bradford Smith (2029, Peachtree Corners, Ga.) took home MVP honors for the 16u group this week, living on the barrel and posting a batting average right at .650. The right handed hitter also tallied eight hits for extra bases and three of those were homers. Smith has some rhythm to the swing with sneaky power. He also has an athletic profile that provides intrigue through the middle of the field. Smith has plenty of impact to the barrel, and I would expect that power to continue to tick upwards over the coming years.

Ashton Zeller (2028, Peachtree City, Ga.) had a nice week on the mound, going 8.1 innings and working the fastball in the 83-85 range. Zeller also has plenty of room to add strength to the frame at 6-foot 150-pounds, and it should be interesting to see how he continues to develop over the next couple of years. The breaker has tight action with feel for the pitch, and the lower half works loosely down the slope.

Arkansas commit Christopher (CJ) Wall (2027, Statesboro, GA) was on fire at the East World Series, slashing .625/.696/1.821 with six walks, two home runs, 10 RBIs and three stolen bases in seven games played. We’ve seen big swings out of Wall all summer, and this was the cherry on top. He’s got all the tools, having elite bat-to-ball skills with raw juice, runs a sub-7 60, and can handle catcher and first base well. He’s going to have a massive senior year at Georgia Premier Academy, and his game should be more than ready for the college level.

Luke Donaldson (2027, Woodstock, GA) hit .727 at the East World Series, going 8/11 at the plate. He’s got some of the best two-way skills in the class, with a fastball that gets into the low-90s and a polished hit tool that has him ranked as the No. 2 first baseman in Georgia. At 6’3 ", 160 lbs, he’s extremely projectable, having tons of room to grow and add strength, which is exciting to think about considering he’s already got plenty of raw juice and hit ability. He has a shot to compete on the mound and at the plate at the next level, and it’ll be interesting to see what route he ultimately goes down at Texas Tech, where he’s committed, if not the two-way route.

Drew King (2028, Alpharetta, GA) was one of the top performers at the 16U level of the East World Series, slashing .429/.529/1.244 with five stolen bases and seven runs scored in six games played. He swings a short and violent bat, getting through the zone and out front in a hurry, staying tall and balanced, creating natural lift and driving gap-to-gap. As he adds strength, he could very well become a favorable catching prospect in the class of ‘28, because the mechanics have already laid a solid foundation.

Jesse Johns (2027, Johns Creek, GA) was mashing at the East World Series, with over half his hits going for extra bases and driving in 12 runs in six games played. The 6’4 ", 225 lb corner infielder has the build and abilities of a dangerous power hitter, creating good hand separation in his load, firing from a strong position, and whipping the barrel through the zone. He gets the bat on plane well and creates multiple points of contact, which allows him to hit to all fields with power. He’s still uncommitted, but is going to be a solid add to someone's recruiting class soon.


Jayzen Johnson (2027, Gainesville, GA) was electric on the hill in his start on Sunday, going four innings, allowing just one hit, zero earned runs and striking out six. He ran the fastball up to 91 mph, mixing in a slider in the upper 70s and a change in the low 80s. He’s quick and twitchy on the mound, working with pace and challenging hitters, trusting his stuff with a 69 strike percentage. Johnson has looked good all summer, getting up to 93 mph at other events and putting together solid outings every time he’s on the hill. He’s still uncommitted, but with the arm talent he has, I expect he won’t be for much longer.

Simon Richardson (2028, Thomasville, Ga.) had a stellar week in the box producing with the bat knocking around seven hits on the week with two doubles, a triple, and showcasing the pop with a homerun. Richardson batted a .412 batting average with a 1.302 OPS while also stealing two bags and flashing a relief appearance with a FB in the high-70s. The six-foot-two middle infielder has good size in the bow showing projection as he further develops his game.

Conner Adams (2028, Canton, Ga.) has been great with the bat all summer consistently finding barrels and gaps in the field, always showcasing a real impressive contact to his game. Adams wrapped a hot summer with the bat in the East World Series, knocking around seven hits with two extra base hits and four brought home on the week. Batting a .467 batting average with an OPS of 1.129 swiping four bases as well and only striking out once being a consistent presence out of the lead off spot.

Caden Morris (2027, Johns Creek, Ga.) showed up big in the box this week barreling up six hits through six games with two doubles, a triple, and also a homerun showing some great ability to find extra bases. Morris knocked around a .545 batting average with a very impressive 1.919 OPS bringing home eight while also showing some great discipline walking eight times without striking out at all. At six-foot-one 190 pounds, the uncommitted ‘27 showed some great ability to his game with upside for the future as he further develops.

Bryce Fontenot (2027, Flowery Branch, Ga.) looked unhittable in his start on the bump, only going three innings but striking out seven without allowing a hit and only allowing a walk with 65% strikes thrown. Fontenot showcases a lively fastball that he ran up to 92 mph complimenting it with a slider in the low-80s running tight acting a nice 2-strike compliment. The Samford commit has big size at 6-foot-2 235 pounds with a ton of natural strength to his game.

Khari Mayfield Jr. (2028, Alpharetta, Ga.) looked great through two outings on the bump this week throwing a combined four innings only allowing two hits striking out an impressive eight batters and only surrendering two walks through two scoreless appearances. Mayfield Jr worked in great rhythm on the mound running a fastball up to 89 mph mixing in with an effective slider in the high-70s. At 6-foot-1 190 pounds, the ‘28 has put together some impressive outings this summer and shown a ton of ability on the mound.

The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. Following a jam-packed week of competition in East Cobb, Georgia, at the 15u WWBA National Championships, East Coast Ghost '29 National and eXposure 15u National were crowned co-champions after inclement weather prevented the championship game from being played. Both clubs completed the tournament undefeated behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive performances on their way to the title. "Couldn’t be more proud of this group," East Coach Head Coach Mike Valerio said. "The amount of work that went into this moment is something no one sees. The countless team and individual practices, workouts, mindset calls and time put in makes this moment even more special.
