In this 2013 “Year of the High School Catcher,” we focused on the top ranked catcher in the class, Washington’s Reese McGuire, in our last high school Draft Focus feature.

For much of last summer, who might be the second best prep catcher was largely a matter of individual opinion, with plenty of possibilities to be considered. USA Baseball choose Jeremy Martinez and Chris Okey to join McGuire on the USA 18U roster. Perfect Game selected Nick Ciuffo and Brian Navarreto to join McGuire, Martinez and Okey on the Perfect Game All-American Classic rosters. Zack Collins would definitely be on the short list for those who thought he could stay behind the plate defensively.

Jon Denney, while being a well-known player in the scouting community, was not considered among that elite group of catchers.

That began to change in the middle of the summer. Denney played for the Marucci Elite in the 17u WWBA National Championship and the DBAT Mustangs in the 18u WWBA National Championship in July and was outstanding at both heavily scouted events. He then went out to California for the Area Code Games and put on a show both defensively and offensively, including blasting a huge home run directly to centerfield at spacious Blair Field that might have been the longest home run ever hit in the long history of the Area Code Games.
