Conventional scouting wisdom says to be very careful about drafting a high school catcher in the first round. Of all the positions on the baseball field, catching is the one that is most dependent on skills, aptitude and intangibles and least dependent on physical tools. Tools are relatively easy to evaluate once you have the experience. Those other intangibles, not so much so, especially for the defensive demands of catching.

The list of high school catchers picked in the first round since uber-athlete Joe Mauer was the first overall selection in 2001 is neither long nor distinguished. Neil Walker (11th pick/2004), Daric Barton (28th/2003) and Brandon Snyder (13th/2005) are all big leaguers but playing other positions. Hank Conger (25th/2006) and Devin Mesaraco (15th/2007) are MLB backups. Kyle Skipworth (6th/2008), the highest selected catcher since Mauer, has struggled to hit in the minors. Some of the more recent first rounders, such as Kellin Deglan (22nd/2010), Stryker Trahan (26th/2012) and Clint Coulter (27th/2012), were picked more on the basis of their bats than on a realistic expectation they would stay behind the plate. Blake Swihart (26th/2011) was a recent conversion to catcher who is doing very well in the lower minors thus far.
