College Fall Notebook: November 6

Virginia Cavaliers

2026 In Review:  Under the leadership of first year Head Coach Chris Pollard, the Cavaliers won 37 games which was the second most victories by a first-year coach in program history.  Virginia went (37-23) finishing tied for 8th in the ACC and earned an at-large bid to the Hattiesburg Regional.  They fielded a talented offense that averaged over 8-runs per game, highlighted by AJ Gracia and Eric Becker who were both selected on Day 1 of the 2026 MLB Draft.  While the defensive squad wasn’t quite as elite as usual, they were ultra-competitive on the mound with a strong rotation and lock down bullpen.  With plenty of talent returning for Pollard and his staff in ’27, they should be a force on a national level once again.

Impact Returners:

Senior Antonio Perrotta (.266/.459/.431, 5 HR, 6 2B, 24 RBI) experienced veteran who has had a tremendous fall, physical presence that has advanced his overall offensive skillset

Junior Zach Jackson (.238/.439/.376, 8 HR, 5 2B, 28 RBI) primed for a breakout season, 1,000+ OPS this fall, continues to add to his twitchy physicality

Junior Henry Zatkkowski (4.57, 8-2, 18 app, 12 starts, 84.2 IP, 96:25 K:BB) unique LHP who lands 5 shapes for strikes, work horse, low-90s heater both 4 and 2-seam to go with sweeper, cutter and changeup

Junior Max Stammel (7.55, 4-6, 19 app, 13 starts, 56.0 IP, 62:28 K:BB) south paw, trending upward stuff wise, touching 94 mph with heater and developing a cutter that will be a factor

Sophomore John Paone (5.85, 1-4, 16 app, 15 starts, 60.0 IP, 69:23 K:BB) power arm sitting 94-97 this fall, heavy sink with lots of strikes, devastating slider to finish hitters

Sophomore Christian Lucarelli (2.41, 1-1, 18 app, 18.2 IP, 19:18 K:BB) loud stuff on the bump, riding fastball up to 97 mph to go with cutter, curve and changeup, candidate to close

Sophomore Thomas Stewart (2.20, 1-0, 11 app, 16.1 IP, 13:5 K:BB) reliable strike thrower with a pure blend, keeps hitters off time and will be vital piece to the staff

Intriguing Newcomers:

Northwestern Graduate transfer Michael Elko (.340/.459/.533, 7 HR, 13 2B, 38 RBI, 27 SB) veteran with the ability to play small ball, fire starter with the stick

Junior transfer from Ohio State Sal Mineo (.304/.410/.447, 7 HR, 8 2B, 31 RBI, 16 SB) will hit in the top of the order, +runner, + arm, super-high motor

Junior Western Kentucky transfer Reid Howard (.302/.419/.419, 9 2B, 3 triples, 13 RBI, 18 SB) has earned the starting nod at short stop, elite defender in all aspects, impacting the ball more consistently

Mount St. Mary’s Junior transfer Serigne Sarre (4.11, 13 starts, 90:33 K:BB) big LHP, lots of deception with low-90s heater to go with +changeup, slider and cutter

Junior Richmond transfer Joey Giordano (3.35, 11-0, 13 starts, 75.1 IP, 63:26 K:BB) lefty with a riding low-90s fastball, changeup to both sides, big upside

Freshman Will Yow is a tremendously talented, twitchy athlete, elite runner and above average power, will force his way into the lineup

Freshman Bryant James has plus tools across the board, with the ability to play most any infield position with advanced glove skills, will be in contention

Freshman Cannon Murtagh raked all fall, blue-collar gamer that is super competitive and a difference maker in the outfield

Freshman Wyatt Clatur boasts a high-octane arm with a heater that reaches 97 mph to go with a sweeper and changeup, tons of strikes, mature on the bump

Freshman Pierce Quinn will see plenty of time out of the bullpen, elite ability to spin the ball, works off his cutter and curveball combination

2027 Outlook:  Year two for Chris Pollard and his staff will see the anticipation as high as usual when it comes to baseball in Charlottesville.  The coaching staff is fully intact from a year ago and the core of the team is deeply immersed in their systems.  With the experience returning on the mound and the offensive components added through the portal, an NCAA Regional host, at a minimum, will be the expectation.  They will test their club right out of the gate as the Cavaliers head to Arlington, TX to participate in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown where they take on TCU, Arizona and Texas.  After the non-conference segment, they head to Stanford as they open ACC play at Sunken Diamond.  Virginia has the look of a club that will finish in the top half of the league but if they find some additional power in the lineup and their talented freshman arms grow up fast, they could contend to win the league.  Regardless, they look like another Top 25 team that will be a handful for any opponent.

UNCG Spartans

2026 In Review:  Things just never seemed to get on track for the Spartans (23-33) in 2026.  Battling through significant injuries and growing pains with some newcomers, Head Coach Cody Ellis had to shuffle lineups and mix rotations to come up with a winning formula.  The offense generated a little over 6-runs per game, but the club was weighed down by a pitching staff that carried an ERA north of 7.00 for the year.  While the record suffered, there were players on both sides of the ball that garnered valuable experience.  This has the program looking optimistically towards the 2027 season as they return a significant amount of impact players that should flip the script quickly in the new year.

Impact Returners:

Senior Jake Mueller (.324/.479/.402, 7 HR, 10 2B, 36 RBI) has seen an uptick in power this fall and should hit in the 4-hole come spring

Senior Jacob Dilley (.324/.549/.403, 10 HR, 12 2B, 38 RBI) squaring balls up at a high level this fall with consistent 100+ EV and is an advanced defender behind the dish

Junior Parker Wight (injured most of 2026) is a super physical 6-3/240 and is showing easy juice line to line, should be a major impact now that he’s healthy

Graduate Luke Thomas (injured most of 2026) has been a lock down closer at times in his career, lives off his nasty cutter and is a high-level strike thrower

Sophomore Cannon Lee (5.40, 2-1, 15 app, 4 starts, 38.1 IP, 35:19 K:BB) was a reliable bullpen arm as a freshman and should fill an even bigger role with his 93-mph heater and 4-pitch blend

Sophomore Thomas Hester (9.10, 0-3, 19 app, 2 saves, 28.2 IP, 28:18 K:BB) big strides forward with command this fall, low-90s heater plays up with his wipeout low-80s slider

Intriguing Newcomers:

Wichita State transfer Senior MJ Sweeney (limited time in 2026 due to injury) will be a hulking presence in the lineup at 6-8/250 with light tower power and improved approach

Senior transfer from Middle Tennesee Abel Albarran (6.89, 0-1, 15 app, 4 starts, 31.1 IP, 23:15 K:BB) refined his delivery this fall and look like a rotation arm with his fastball that reaches 94 mph to go with a cutter, slider and changeup

JUCO transfer John Clinkenbeard (.286/.514/.437, 8 HR, 14 2B, 41 RBI) will be another physical addition to the lineup at 6-4/200 adding depth and handling a corner defensively

Freshman Bubba Sims could contribute heavily as a two-way athlete, he was 91-94 on the mound this fall and possesses plenty of juice to get his stick in the lineup

Freshman Michael Thompson is tremendously athletic with dense strength at 6-1/210 and has tools across the board, with his bat to ball skills he should see time in CF

2027 Outlook:  UNCG won the SoCon Regular Season title in 2024 but followed that up with 21 wins in ’25 and 23 wins a year ago.  This lineup will be a bit of a diversion offensively from what the Spartans have been recently.  In the past, they have been a high-pressure operation, stealing bags in bunches and hitting the occasional home run.  But this year’s version is going to fill up the batter’s box with big bodies, and they will mostly likely be playing for the 3-run inning so to speak.  As things typically do, it will once again come down to how much improvement there is on the bump.  This staff has more power arms than last year and the pitchability has taken a step forward as well.  The SoCon was as competitive as ever in ’26 with a league RPI of 8 and 4 of the 8 teams boasting RPIs inside 100.  This trend should continue and watch for the Spartans to return to the top of the league and challenge for another trip to the NCAA Tournament.

South Florida Bulls

2026 In Review:  The Bulls finished the season (32-21) overall and a disappointing (11-16) in American Conference play.  Mitch Hannahs had his club off and running early in the season, beginning the year by winning 21 of their first 25 contests.  With a combination of quality starting pitching and timely hitting the Bulls found themselves ranked in the Top 25 heading into American Conference play.  But USF found themselves struggling in league play, winning only 5 games in their first 4 series.  Offensively, the Bulls hit .287 as a team but only generated 23 home runs and just over 6 runs per game.  The pitching was solid, finishing the year with a team ERA of 4.58 but their margin for error was just too slim.  Ultimately, they finished 9th in the 10-team league, falling short of the conference tournament.

Impact Returners:

Redshirt Senior Joey Brenczewski (limited time in ’26) has put together a huge fall, 2-hole type hitter, bat to ball skills, switch-hitter that will make the offense tick

Sophomore Jack Lutz (.288/.363/.366, 6 2B, 3 triples, 22 RBI) has added significant physicality, top of the order type stick, gap to gap approach with more power than a year ago

Sophomore Eli Thomas (.333/.444/.419, 6 2B, 17 RBI) may have been their best hitter this fall, professional approach, projected 3-hole, pure swing that should make him a huge run producer in ‘27

Sophomore Jackson Mirza (.345/.509/.400, 4 2B, 10 RBI) smaller sample size from ’26 but came on in a big way towards the end of the fall, dynamic athlete with +bat speed, should do damage in the middle of the order

Sophomore Dominic Pontbriant (3.05, 4-0, 18 app, 6 starts, 44.1 IP, 28:12 K:BB) LHP who has added a lot of size in the last year, +command and deception, low-90s heater +changeup combo, back end of rotation potential

Sophomore Will Allen (4.98, 0-2, 12 app, 4 starts, 21.2, 16:9 K:BB) super physical RHP, candidate for the rotation, FB 90-93 with advanced feel for his changeup and improved slider

Sophomore Brisen Tweedy (5.28, 0-0, 11 app, 15.1 IP, 12:7 K:BB) reliable strike thrower, sinker/slider combination, stays off the barrel, swing man between starter and vital bullpen piece

Intriguing Newcomers:

UCCS transfer Redshirt Senior Trevor Dale (.385/.946/.477, 27 HR, 6 triples, 66 RBI) consensus All-American in ’26, elite defender and has won the job at shortstop, intriguing offensive profile

Senior Washburn transfer Ian Luce (.417/.679/.502, 9 HR, 20 2B, 51 RBI, 18 SB) grinds out at-bats, advanced plate discipline and swing decisions, sweet lefthanded swing that will be in the middle of the order

Florida transfer Sophomore Eli Blair (4.82, 0-1, 9 app, 9.1 IP, 9:3 K:BB) massive 6-8/220 LHP, potential top of the rotation arm, touch angle for hitters, low-90s heater with hop in the zone, slider is a legit wipeout pitch

Sophomore Evansville transfer Spike Magill (.293/.384/.480, 3 HR, 6 2B, 21 RBI) looks like the starter behind the dish, top notch skillset on the defensive side of the ball, professional approach to handling a staff

UCF transfer Redshirt Freshman Kiernan O’Neill, corner infielder with middle of the order offensive potential, ++bat speed, power is going to play, gamer mentality

Freshman Max Irving, 18th round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers, switch-hitter, glove plays anywhere on the infield, advanced offensive tools, should see time in ‘27

Freshman Taylor Casson, physical 6-4/198 RHP with a power arsenal, fastball will reach 94 mph with ride through the zone, backs that up with abrupt slider that will neutralize hitters, leverage arm out of the pen

2027 Outlook: There is no doubt that Hannahs and staff have taken steps to ensure the 2027 club finishes as well as it started a year ago.  From a talent standpoint, this team will rely heavily on its sophomore class that is both talented and experienced from the ’26 campaign.  They will look to improve their power numbers while staying true to their whole fields approach and grinding out at bats.  They were a quality defensive corps, fielding .977 and they have taken another step forward in what could make them one of the elite defensive units in the nation.  While they don’t have an established pitching rotation, once again the sophomore class provides them with plenty of quality options.  Like most programs these days, if they hit on their transfer class, the Bulls could be a team to watch in the American Athletic Conference.

That Off-Season Program Wasn't Built for Your Son. It Was Built for Nobody. The Harsh Reality of Skill Development · Part 2 of 5 Somewhere right now, a pitcher is starting a twelve-week off-season program. It came from his travel team. Or a trainer. Or a big leaguer's Instagram. It has phases and a logo, and every kid in the building got the same one. Here is the harsh reality. That program was written before anybody looked at your son. It doesn't know he exists. It was built for the average pitcher... and the average pitcher does not exist. A Template Fixes Somebody's Problem. Maybe Not His. Every pitcher who is stuck is stuck for a reason. We call that reason his constraint... the thing that is actually limiting him right now. For one kid it is strength. For the next it is mobility. For the next it is a mechanical inefficiency, or an arm that isn't recovering, or a body that...

Your Son's April Arm Injury is Being Scheduled Right Now   The Harsh Reality of Skill Development - Part 1 of 5 Let me start this series with something most people in baseball won't say out loud. In my experience, a great many of the arm problems we will see next April are being set up right now... in October, November and December. Not necessarily because a young pitcher is throwing too much. Often it's because of what happens when he stops. Here is the pattern. I have watched it for more than thirty years. The fall season ends. The arm is tired, so the family does what seems like the responsible thing.  They shut it down. No throwing. For a lot of kids, no anything. Weeks go by. The holidays come and go. Then somebody looks at a calendar in January and realizes tryouts are three weeks away. Suddenly, an arm that has done nothing since October is asked to go from zero to game...
