2019 Perfect Game/Rawlings High School Players of the Year

STATE NAME
ALABAMA Gunnar Henderson
Henderson, a PG All-American and second round selection by the Baltimore Orioles, was not only the best player in Alabama this year but also lead his John T Morgan Academy to an undefeated state title. The lefthanded hitter hit .563 with 10 home runs and 66 RBI on the season. He was one of the more feared hitters this year and was consistent from start to finish.
ALASKA Leland Wilson
Wilson is one of the better prospects in the state of Alaska as a rising senior this summer and Perfect Game had eyes on Wilson back at the West MLK Championship. The lanky lefthanded pitcher works in the mid-80s and shoved out west in January where he turned in four hitless innings while punching out eight batters in the process.
ARIZONA Jose Dicochea
An eighth round selection by the Oakland A’s, Dicochea was one of the better prospects in the state and his numbers certainly backed up those assessments. The Arizona signee was the workhorse for Sahuarita High School down the stretch where he went 6-3 with a 1.30 ERA and struck out 86 hitters in 54 innings pitched with only 11 walks to his name as well.
ARKANSAS Blake Adams
One of the aces for the Arkansas Sticks this summer, Adams was the ace for Har-Ber high school and was a middle of the order threat as well. The future Razorback went 7-0 with a 1.55 ERA while striking out 85 in 54.1 innings pitched. Adams also hit very well for Har-Ber where he hit over .300 with five home runs to provide a ton of value for one of the top teams in the state.
CALIFORNIA Jared Jones
The Two-Way Player of the Year as only a junior, Jones was electric for La Mirada where he was hitting bombs at the plate and routinely flirting with triple digits on the mound. Jones was impressive at PG National where he threw 100 mph from the outfield and hit .457 on the season while also going 5-1 with a miniscule ERA of 0.82 with 79 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched. Jones has established himself as one of the top 2020 prospects in the country and the Southern California commit looks to be in store for a loud summer.
COLORADO Riley Cornelio
Cornelio, a PG All-American and TCU signee, was the top draft prospect in the state and also had strong numbers on both sides of the ball for Pine Creek High School. He worked routinely into the mid-90s with strong secondaries and hit well over .400 on the season. He’ll pitch at TCU primarily where he was a swing-and-miss machine this season raking up 99 strikeouts in 55.2 innings pitched.
CONNECTICUT Chad Knight
Knight, a Duke signee and a 31st round pick by the Yankees, was the top hitter in the state this year where he helped lead Staples to a state title. The righthanded slugger was a massive threat in the box where he hit .486 with 12 home runs and a very disciplined approach where he walked 31 times and only struck out 15 times on the spring.
DELAWARE Lorenzo Carrier
Carrier was one of two 2021s to capture state player of the year honors as the Miami commit and former PG 14u Select Festival participant was a key cog in an Appoquinimink team that captured a state title. Carrier hit .423 on the season with 12 extra base hits, 22 RBI, and 10 stolen bases on the season.
FLORIDA Matthew Allan
Allan was considered by many to be the top prep arm in this year’s draft and the Mets third round pick, as well as a Florida signee and PG All-American, helped lead Seminole to their first state title in nearly two decades. Allan was routinely touching 98 mph with a hammer breaking ball where he struck out 130 batters in 70 innings pitched. He also added some thump in the lineup with a .300 average and six home runs.
GEORGIA CJ Abrams
Abrams has been an explosive presence throughout much of his high school career at Blessed Trinity and it culminated with him being the sixth overall pick by the San Diego Padres. Abrams hit .410 on the spring with 25 extra-base hits and 33 stolen bases to his name. He was a sparkplug throughout the season as his double-plus speed and athleticism allowed him to handle the barrel well and be a terror on the basepaths.
HAWAII  Shane Sasaki
Sasaki was the consensus top draft prospect from Hawai’i this season and the Cal Poly signee ended up going in the third round to the Tampa Bay Rays. Sasaki had excellent stats for Iolan’I High School as he hit .565 with five home runs on the spring. He was one of the more athletic prospects in the draft and also tallied 26 RBI, 26 runs scored, and eight stolen bases.
IDAHO Randon Hostert
Hostert took a big step forward at the Area Code Games last year and the top draft prospect from Idaho went in the 15th round to the Rangers. From Bonneville High School, Hostert went 5-2 on the season with an ERA around 2.00 on the season. He racked up a good number of strikeouts with 57 on the season and is committed to play at Utah should he not sign with Texas.
ILLINOIS Quinn Priester
Priester ended up being the top prep arm selected in the draft and went to the Pirates with the 18th pick of the first round. The ace of Cary-Grove Community, Priester was electric on the mound as he went 8-2 with a 1.16 ERA to go along with 91 strikeouts and just 14 walks in 60.1 innings. Priester was flirting with the upper-90s and has excellent command, life, and secondary pitches.
INDIANA Michael Doolin
Doolin was outstanding for Andrean High School this spring as he eventually led his team to a state championship and a top 15 ranking in the High School Top 50. Doolin has superb command and went 14-0 on the season with 131 strikeouts to just 12 walks in 77 innings. His 0.46 ERA is noteworthy too as he was one of the toughest pitches to hit in the country this year.
IOWA Peyton Williams
Though the Iowa high school baseball season is only a few weeks underway, Williams is already putting up some impressive offensive numbers for the top-ranked Dragons of Johnston High School. The first baseman is batting .516, with 10 home runs and 30 RBI through the first 20 games of the season. Starting every game thus far, Williams has shown impressive power, slugging a whopping 1.126. A favorite to take home the state title in Class 4A, Williams is looking to go out on top before taking the field for the Hawkeyes next fall.
KANSAS Jace Kaminska
Kaminska, a 2020 graduate committed to Wichita State, had one of the strongest lines you’ll see a high school arm put up as he did not allow an earned run all season. Kaminska went 4-0 on the season with no earned runs in 32 innings pitched on the mound while he also struck out 85 and allowed very limited hits and walks on the season.
KENTUCKY Ryan Hawks
Hawks, a Louisville signee, was outstanding for Warren East High School this spring as he had an ERA under 1.00 on the season with a 7-2 record. Hawks struck out almost everyone he faced with an insane strikeout-to-walk ratio of 121 to 10. Hawks features a power sinker and also contributed with the bat as he hit .381 with four home runs.
LOUISIANA Cade Doughty
Doughty, a PG All-American, was one of the best seniors in the country this spring as the Denham Springs star just continued to hit. The stats were gaudy for Doughty as he hit above .500 on the season and was constantly scoring runs near the top of the lineup. He was very impressive helping Denham Springs at the PG High School Showdown earlier this spring. Doughty is signed on to play at LSU next spring and was selected in the 39th round by the Tigers.
MAINE
Hunter Owen
Owen is a 2020 who is committed to Vanderbilt and the southpaw had a dominant spring for South Portland High School. The lefthander had a miniscule ERA of 0.17 while going 5-0 on the season. He struck out a large portion of his batter’s faced with 73 punchouts to only 11 walks in a little over 40 innings.
MARYLAND
Tyler Demartino
DeMartino, a West Virginia signee, had made a name for himself over the summer circuit as a prospect who often finds the barrel and finds it well. He ended up hitting a robust .524 on the season for Walt Whitman High School and DeMartino’s barrel skills and hitting ability should be able to play right away in Morgantown next spring.
MASSACHUSETTS Sebastian Keane
Keane had one of the better statistical seasons in the country and was really the no-doubt choice for Massachusetts and North Andover High School. The righthander was drafted in the 11th round by the Red Sox and went 10-1 with an ERA of 0.59 on the season. He racked up the strikeouts while not walking very many hitters as his ratio of 104 strikeouts to 14 walks in just 59 innings pitched is notable.
MICHIGAN Alex Mooney
In what was a very competitive year in Michigan, Mooney stood out as being the best hitter on the best team in the state. The Duke commit, and one of two sophomores on this list, had an OPS over 1.200 with seven home runs and a .424 batting average. Mooney’s presence in the lineup was not only dominant from a statistical standpoint but he led the No. 38 team in the country to a state title.
MINNESOTA Drew Gilbert
Stillwater was the top team in Minnesota all season long and their star two-way player Drew Gilbert was otherworldly. The southpaw had a microscopic ERA of 0.13 on the year with 107 strikeouts in 54 innings pitched while he also hit .369 out of the leadoff spot and only struck out 7 times on the year. Gilbert is signed with Oregon State and was drafted in the 35th round by the Twins.
MISSISSIPPI  Blaze Jordan
Mississippi was naturally competitive for this award but Blaze Jordan was terrific for the No. 7 team in the country DeSoto Central. Playing as a sophomore, he recently reclassed to the 2020 class, Jordan hit .456 with 10 home runs and 11 doubles on the season. The Mississippi State commit has huge raw power with one of the best pure hit tools in the class and helped lead a DeSoto Central team that was one of the best in the country.
MISSOURI Marcus Smith
The third round pick of the Oakland Athletics in this year’s draft, Smith enjoyed what was an outstanding spring on the diamond. Smith batted .479 with 19 extra-base hits, including four home runs. Smith’s performance helped lead the Raiders of Pembroke Hill to the quarterfinals of the Missouri state baseball tournament. Smith has signed on to join the Athletics, and it will be exciting to see how the bat and speed develop at the professional level.
NEBRASKA Max Anderson
Anderson, who is committed to Texas A&M and ranked as Perfect Game’s top Nebraska prospect in the 2020 class, had a great offensive season for the state champion Millard West Wildcats. Anderson batted .366, showing some good power with nine home runs. The shortstop’s offensive power will be put on display this summer at 17U WWBA National Championship, and Anderson will look to pick up right where he left off at Millard West.
NEVADA Aaron Roberts
A PG National Showcase alum, and the 15th round selection by the Boston Red Sox in this year’s draft, Aaron Roberts had a dominant spring for Desert Oasis High School this season. Roberts batted .495, showing some great power from the right side of the plate with 12 home runs. On the mound, the 6-foot-3 righty posted a 5-0 record with a 0.90 ERA. Roberts struck out 58 batters in 37 innings of work, leading the Diamondbacks to a Nevada state championship and Top-25 ranking in Perfect Game’s final High School Top 50.
NEW HAMPSHIRE Brett Anderson
Anderson had a strong season on the mound for Bishop Guertin, posting an ERA right around 1.00 and nearly 80 strikeouts. At the plate, Anderson batted well above the .400 mark with double-digit RBI. The southpaw helped lead the Cardinals to a quarterfinal appearance in the New Hampshire State Baseball Tournament. After such a successful spring, Anderson will look to showcase his talents at the 17U WWBA National Championship later this month.
NEW JERSEY Anthony Volpe
A 2018 Perfect Game All-American and first round selection by the New York Yankees in this year’s draft, Volpe put together an impressive senior campaign for Delbarton High School this spring. Volpe batted .477 with eight home runs. Volpe was a looming presence at the plate for Green Wave, recording 20 extra-base hits and striking out just eight times compared to 19 walks. Now wearing the pinstripes, Volpe will look to continue his great success at the professional level.
NEW MEXICO Hayden Walker
Walker had an outstanding spring on the mound for St. Pius X, posting a 9-1 record and 0.48 ERA. Striking out 95 batters in 58 innings of work, the southpaw also showed some versatility, recording one save out of the bullpen. Ultimately, Walker’s strong season was good enough to help the Spartans to a New Mexico state title. A member of the 2020 class, Walker is committed to Pepperdine.
NEW YORK Joe Vetrano
Prior to a solid performance at last week’s PG National Showcase, Vetrano had an excellent spring for the Hornets of Lakeland High School. A solid two-way player with upside at both the plate and on the mound, Vetrano batted .419 with seven home runs and 22 RBI. A left-handed pitching prospect as well, Vetrano posted 7-0 record this spring with a 0.55 ERA. The rising senior is committed to Boston College.
NORTH CAROLINA Blake Walston
New Hanover was one of the best teams in the country dating back to last season and they had the best pitcher in high school baseball as Blake Walston is the Pitcher of the Year. Walston was electric and shot up draft boards this spring, he was a first-round pick by the Diamondbacks, running his fastball into the mid-90s with a power curveball. Walston led New Hanover to a state title with a 13-0 record, an ERA of 0.46, and 137 strikeouts in 75.1 innings pitched.
NORTH DAKOTA Cade Feeney
Feeney, a top 500 player in Perfect Game’s 2020 class, had an impressive junior campaign for Century High School. Feeney posted a 4-0 record with a 0.88 ERA, good enough for First Team All-State honors. Feeney’s performance on the mound this spring was strong enough to help lead Century to a North Dakota Class A state championship.
OHIO Jase Bowen
Bowen, who is committed to Michigan State for both baseball and football, was one of the more electric athletes in this year’s draft. Bowen was drafted in the 11th round by the Pirates and hit a robust .573 on the season for Toledo Central Catholic High School. Bowen had an OPS of over 1.500 on the season and was the top hitter in the state of Ohio.
OKLAHOMA Kale Davis
Davis was another righthanded pitcher that received plenty of buzz leading up to this year’s draft, and rightfully so. The righty posted 0.36 ERA, striking out 96 batters. The performance on the mound was good enough to help lead Westmoore to the Oklahoma Class 6A quarterfinals. Davis has always shown he can pitch, going back to last summer's perfect game at 17u WWBA, and is set to take the mound for the Cowboys of Oklahoma State next spring.
OREGON Mick Abel
Recognized as a high-level talent since participating in the 14u Select Festival in 2016, Abel has continued to grow into a dominant pitcher in the 2020 class. Prior to showing off his electric fastball at last week’s National Showcase, the righty posted a 9-0 record with a 1.34 ERA for Jesuit High School. The Oregon State commit tossed 90 strikeouts over 57 1/3 innings, and he is only continuing to get better leading up to next year’s draft.
PENNSYLVANIA Sammy Siani
The younger brother of 2018 Reds fourth round pick Mike, Sammy Siani had an impressive spring before being drafted 43rd overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in this year’s draft. Siani batted .457, showing some power as well with six home runs and 25 RBI. The William Penn Charter senior also showed off some impressive speed, stealing 19 bases. Siani has already signed on with the Pirates, and it will be exciting to see how his impressive bat continues to develop at the professional level.
RHODE ISLAND Tucker Flint
Flint was another prospect from the northeast that received a lot of attention leading up to this year’s draft, eventually being taken in the 36th round by the New York Mets. Flint had an exceptional season for Bishop Hendricken, helping lead the Hawks to a Rhode Island state title. Flint’s left-handed bat was a catalyst in the lineup, batting in double digit runs. The outfielder is slated to take the field for Maryland next spring.
SOUTH CAROLINA  Geoffrey Gilbert
An alum of the 2018 PG National Showcase, the strong left-hander had a great season on the mound for Bishop England High School this spring and is the only consecutive winner on this list. Gilbert had a 0.56 ERA, striking out 102 batters in 61 2/3 innings of work. Gilbert, who will be pitching for the Clemson Tigers next fall, helped lead the Battling Bishops to a South Carolina state title in May. Gilbert ranks as the nation’s 34th best lefthanded pitcher in Perfect Game’s 2019 class.
TENNESSEE Ryan Hagenow
Before putting on an impressive display of pitching at the PG National Showcase last week, Hagenow was brilliant during the Kentucky high school baseball season. The junior posted a 12-1 record with a 1.02 ERA for the Admirals of Farragut High School. Hagenow struck out 96 batters over 68 2/3 innings of work this season, and it will be exciting to see how the hard-throwing righty and Kentucky Wildcat commit develops over the next year leading up to the MLB draft.
TEXAS Bobby Witt Jr
The No. 2 overall pick in the draft was the no-doubt choice for National Player of the Year as Witt was a force all season as he led Colleyville Heritage to a state title and the No. 4 ranking in the final High School Top 50. Witt hit .482 on the season with fifteen home runs and 55 RBI to total up with an OPS over 1.600. The former PG All-American stood out above a very talented Texas high school year, Brett Baty and JJ Goss were also first round picks with excellent stats, but Witt’s story-book ending to his high school career is only capped off by becoming the face of the Royals franchise.
UTAH Kayler Yates
A 31st round selection by the Dodgers in this year’s draft, Yates put together quite the offensive performance for the Flyers of Dixie High School. Yates batted .489, with nine home runs and 38 RBI in a spring that included a trip to the 4A state championship game. The shortstop is set to take the field for the Utah Utes next spring.
VERMONT Colby Brouillette
Brouillette had a strong spring for the Bellows Free Academy, batting above .500 on the season with an on-base percentage above .600. A secondary righthanded pitcher, Brouillette also impressed on the mound with a strong arm that helped induce a number of whiffs in limited innings on his way to an impressive ERA below 2.00. Brouillette will take the field for the Golden Knights of Clarkson University next spring.
VIRGINIA Jamari Baylor
The third round selection of the Philadelphia Phillies in this year’s draft, Jamari Baylor put together an impressive season for nationally ranked Benedictine Prep. The senior batted .440 with six home runs and 17 RBI this spring, helping lead the Cadets to their second Virginia state title in three years. The shortstop has impressive speed and a loud bat that will continue to develop at the professional level.
WASHINGTON Corbin Carroll
A 2018 PG All-American and the Diamondbacks’ first round selection in this year’s draft, Carroll has long been an impressive player nationally. The outfielder batted .540 with nine home runs and 26 RBI this spring, and also used his impressive speed to record 19 extra-base hits and 11 stolen bases in his senior campaign. Often praised for his outstanding athleticism in the outfield, Carroll will get the chance to build on what was an impressive spring at the professional level.
WEST VIRGINIA Jonathan Blackwell
Blackwell had a stellar season for Hurricane High School this season, posting a 1.08 ERA and a WHIP under 1.00. The lefty struck out 109 batters in his 64 innings of work, leading the Redskins to a 28-4 record and a trip to the West Virginia Class AAA State Tournament. Blackwell will pitch for Coastal Carolina next season.
WISCONSIN Connor Prielipp
The 37th round pick by the Boston Red Sox in this year’s draft, Prielipp had an outstanding season for Tomah High School this spring. The southpaw posted a 0.85 ERA on his way to a 6-2 record. However, more impressive than the sub-one ERA was the command of the strike zone, striking out 115 batters while walking just five. Prielipp has a fastball up to 90 mph and will pitch for the Crimson Tide of Alabama next spring.

PG Super Regionals Dripping Springs, Texas June 6-7, 2026     DRIPPING SPRINGS, TX- The weather was nice, the Longhorns JUST won a national championship, and Perfect Game brought it’s first softball event to Dripping Springs. It was a weekend packed with college coaches, quality softball, and a great softball atmosphere. Over the course of the six-game guarantee event, our scout saw some amazing athletes. Below she highlights some of the athletes who caught her eye.   Destiny Sidiropoulos (2028, Houston, TX) of the Impact Gold HTX 16U was an incredible spark plug at the top of their lineup all weekend. She is a true triple threat who has great speed on the basepaths. She can soft and power slap, drop a sneaky bunt, and hit away with pop. Her barrel control is next level, and she is fun to watch pick apart defenses. On defense, she is versatile and athletic. She gets...

West Coast Summer Breakout Hopefuls

Joey Cohen
Article Image
With summer ball ramping up, the priority follow lists from our scouting staff start to take shape and every year a handful of intriguing names outside the national spotlight begin to separate. Digging deeper into the West region, there’s a group of prospects currently buried outside the Top 200 who carry real breakout and helium potential over the next few months. All 10 players featured here are coming off strong high school seasons and bring traits that evaluators tend to bet on whether it’s projectable/athletic bodies, strong secondary stuff, or flashes of impact tools. They may not be household names just yet, but the ingredients are there for significant jumps by the end of the summer circuit. Don’t be surprised if several of these names are firmly in the mix and climbing up early boards in a hurry before the fall rolls around. Two innings of work here from Jonah...

UBC West Scout Notes: Days 1-2

Steve Fiorindo
Article Image
Nash McCarthy (2030, Camas, WA) was outstanding in his start on day two of the UBC West for NW Baum Bat, working six-innings allowing four-hits, no walks and struck out seven.  Standing at 6-foot, 170-pounds with athleticism and room to add.  Effortless mover down the bump with a low effort, up-tempo operation that produced a fastball that was up to 84.  He showed feel for the secondary offerings mixing in a firm breaking ball at 71-74 with 11-5 shape with depth.  Controlled the zone and the tempo throughout the outing, moving the ball around to all four-quadrants.  Projectable arm speed with advanced feel for the spin and strike zone.  Dylan D'Oyen (2030, Cerritos, CA) got the start for 5 Star 2030 in their opening game of the tournament and impressed over six innings of work.  Athletic mover down the mound with balance and repeats the delivery. ...

Quintin Blackwell (2030, Hercules, California) has, literally, been unstoppable this weekend for Premier Banditos Deleon. In six plate appearances, he has a walk and five hits. Doing it all with a double and two triples, while stealing three bags. Plenty of coil on the front side. Hands work through zone and the barrel stays on plane for a long time. High upside bat that makes an already deep Banditos lineup even deeper. Kenson Buth (2027, Trophy Club, Texas) has been an absolute weapon on both ends for Stix 2027 Scout. At the plate, he’s 6-9 with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. Linear approach with a ton of bat speed. Plenty of impact at the bottom of the zone and showing some ability to do serious damage in the middle of the field. On the mound, he went four quality innings, punching out three. The fastball lived 86-90 with carry. Good feel for the slider in the mid 70s....

Sawyer Pettit (‘27 MS) Has shown extremely well to start the summer of 2026. Its a physical left-handed hitting corner profile with big muscle mass. Will pass the eye test off the bus at the next level. The swing is clean with controlled violence and big in-air power that has shown up frequently. Good mover for the size and plays the game hard. Candidate for a big frosh season at LSU-Eunice in 2028. Keviyun McQueen (‘27 MS) Pair of barrels tied together here. Innate feel to hit with fast hands. 13/14u PG Elite Scout Notes: Days 3-5

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
13u & 14u PG Elite Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Tucker Richardson (2030, Mobile, Ala.) has already made a name for himself and he continued to play at the expected high level during his time in Hoover, finishing the tournament with a robust .700 average, collecting at least one base hit in each of his team’s games. Now the No. 10 ranked prospect in the country, Richardson more than once showed the ability to read and react to spin out of the pitcher’s hand, barreling up baseballs for a couple of his hits on the tournament. As much as the bat stands out, the defensive actions in the dirt are even better as he’s arguably the best defender in the class, making the most difficult plays look routing, including one where he charged hard on a slow roller with momentum taking him towards the third base dugout but thanks to the big arm, he was able to make the play look second...
