1. It’s early, but the West Coast Conference is better than expected
It shouldn’t come as a surprise the state of baseball in Southern California is strong. Barring some bizarre year, it always is. But while the Big West and Pac-12 were expected to be strong conferences in 2014, the WCC left something to be desired on paper.
San Diego was expected to take a step back offensively without Kris Bryant, Pepperdine had potential with the return of two-way star Aaron Brown and senior right-handed pitcher Corey Miller, but the offense was a concern. Then there’s San Francisco, who has Bradley Zimmer and Derek Atkinson, but pitching was somewhat of a question mark beyond a couple of talented starting pitchers.
It’s still very early, but those three teams are much better than expected at this point in the season. San Diego is 12-3 and Andrew Daniel and Louie Lechich have somewhat made up for the loss of Bryant, while the Waves have been very solid on the mound, and freshman catcher Aaron Barnett has provided a huge boost at the plate.
