Coppy's Corner: July 7 Summer Edition

It’s an exciting time for College Baseball. Not only do potential and proposed changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) elevate the game, but we are coming off a thrilling College World Series and less than a week away from Major League Baseball’s 2026 Amateur Draft. In the middle of it all is the Cape Cod Baseball League. 

The amateur players on the Cape are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th  through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role. 



It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. And, who knows, maybe somewhere out there Jessica Biel is reading it. 

Player of the Week: Dominic Cadiz – Orleans Firebirds 

Cadiz set off some early fireworks on Friday with a 6-for-6 (!) performance that included a Home Run, 3 Runs Scored and 4 Runs Batted In. Splitting time equally between 3B and 1B for Orleans, the UCLA product had a walk-off single three days earlier and has been making the most of his time in New England. Cadiz currently sits at .338 AVG, 2 HR, 13 RBI, and an .823 OPS for the Firebirds, which is a nice jump from his freshmen year performance, where he hit .256 AVG, 2 HR, 15 RBI, and a .746 OPS for the Bruins. 

Cadiz is still only 19 years old and the success he is showing with wooden bats bodes well for his future in professional baseball. He showed the ability to crush left-handed pitching last season at UCLA, mashing .310 AVG and .895 OPS against southpaws this past spring. The ability to play 3B and 1B with a bat over power approach reminds me a little bit of Jeff Cirillo. Like Cadiz, Cirillo was a So Cal prep, although he went to UCLA’s archrival: USC. Cadiz at 6’1/220 may have more power upside than Cirillo did at 6’2/190, and it will be fun to watch his development. 

Carry Tool: Hit. Cirillo was an 11th Round Pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1991 and hit his way to the Major Leagues, posting impressive career numbers, including a .296 AVG and .366 OBP while making two All-Star teams. Not many players these days post those types of AVG and OBP in MLB, but Cadiz’s hit tool is intriguing. What stood out to me this spring is how well Cadiz controlled the strike zone, especially as such a young player, generating only 18% Miss Rate and 23% Chase Rate on all pitches. Cadiz also showed the ability to hit premium velocity, posting a .333 AVG and .944 OPS against all pitches 93 mph or faster. Cadiz won’t be draft-eligible until 2028 but look for him to make a big jump forward for UCLA this spring. 

Pitcher of the Week: Connor Mohan, Wareham Gatemen 

Speaking of big jumps forward, the Cape has been a coming-out part for Mohan, who had his best week to date, going 1-0 with 5.1 IP, 3 Hits, 1 BB, 9 SO, and 0 Runs. Mohan still has a 6.08 ERA, but you need to look closer at his stuff numbers and see that, over 13.1 IP thus far in the Cape, he has 4 BB vs. 18 SO. That’s a massive jump from a tough 2026 season at Texas Tech that saw Mohan allow all hitters a .360 AVG and 1.178 OPS with a ghastly 10.94 ERA (!) and 26 BB vs. 31 SO in 38.2 IP, with 10 of his 15 appearances coming as a starting pitcher.  

Mohan has been pitching out of the bullpen for Wareham and that may be where his future lies in professional baseball. Initially listed at 6’3/165 as a freshman, he is eminently projectable and has seen his stuff tick up a grade this summer, with his Fastball rising from 91-94 in Lubbock to 92-96 in New England. He’s also throwing his SL a little bit harder from 80-82 in the spring to 83-85 in the summer. All of it is working so well for Mohan that he is now committed to Wake Forest, and it will be intriguing to track his development with improved stuff in a different environment. 

Carry Tool: SL – for now. Looking at the outcomes of Mohan’s pitching this spring it seems like there is an opportunity to change his approach and get better outcomes. Check out the following chart from this spring:

The two pitches that Mohan threw the most this spring at Texas Tech were his most hittable. Although I don’t have the data from the Cape, improving the quality of his pitches and changing his approach could make a big difference. Mohan’s stuff has played up out of the bullpen with his SL becoming his out pitch this summer, and it’s easy to see a future where he becomes a high draft pick based on the upside.  

And that future could come this weekend! Mohan (DOB: 7/5/05) turned 21 years old on Sunday and will be draft-eligible this weekend. With his latest measurements putting him at 6’4/190 and with the ability for at least two above average offerings not to mention an improved approach, Mohan’s upside is tantalizing. We will find out this weekend whether his immediate future is in pro ball or at Wake Forest. 


National Nuggets

Proposals made in recent months by MLB in negotiations with the MLB Players Association on a new CBA (as mentioned above) have drawn a lot of attention … College Baseball is set to benefit and continue to grow in popularity, as MLB seeks to become more like the NFL and the NBA by truncating the Draft and placing an emphasis on college players … speaking of the Draft, it happens this coming weekend in Philadelphia, and I will have some thoughts on the first round in next week’s National Nuggets … my guess, and it’s nothing more than a guess at this point, is that the first college position player off the board is Roch Cholowsky and the first pitcher is Jackson Flora.

Luke Costello | INF | South Carolina | Bourne Braves  Costello brings one of the cleaner offensive operations in the Cape, featuring a simple, direct swing that allows him to consistently get the barrel out front and do damage. He minimizes unnecessary movement, stays on time, and shows the strength to impact the baseball with authority. After a very productive spring hitting .302 with 17 home runs during his sophomore season at Wake Forest, Costello heads to South Carolina as an established middle-of-the-order bat. As the summer travel baseball season comes to an end, over 80 teams will meet in East Cobb, Georgia as they look to end the year with a victory and a trophy at the PG East World Series. The premier event will host 5 age groups of 14u-18u with pool play commencing the tournament on Friday, July 24th, with champions crowned on Monday, July 27th at East Cobb Baseball Complex. The 15u field will feature 26 teams from all over the southeast, including the No. 27 team in the nation from the 14u rankings, Home Plate Chili Dogs 14u Glozier. The Chili Dogs, who also played up in the 15u WWBA last week for increased exposure, have been a very solid team this summer, but are still in search of their first championship win of the season. Gavin Johnson (2029, De Pere, Wisc.) handled the bat pretty well this weekend for his CBT Wolfpack 15u team that made a run into bracket play. Johnson is a left-handed hitting first baseman with a physical 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame, showing good physicality throughout the build. It’s a clean stroke from the left side, with feel to deliver the barrel on time and drive the ball working pull-side. He has a feel to rotate well, loading deep with the hands & turning well through contact to impact the baseball out in front. Another week of Perfect Game baseball concluded as champions were crowned in the 15U, 16U, and 18U divisions of the Southwest Select Championship. After several days of pool play and championship bracket action, three teams rose above the competition to capture tournament titles following a week of high-level baseball. Throughout the tournament, teams from across the Southwest and beyond competed in closely contested matchups, producing standout pitching performances, timely offense, and memorable defensive plays. Tyler Osmanski (2027, Frankfort, Ill.) a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed pitcher worked a 7 inning complete game shutout to start off Chicago Elite’s 6-0 weekend. On top of going the distance he allowed only three base runners and one hit. Osmanski has lots of athleticism in his delivery. He keeps his body under control while still being able to have good arm action and great hip to shoulder separation. He works from the third base side of the rubber with a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball was up to 84mph multiple times and sat 80-83mph.
