College Field of 64: April 11

* Only two Big 12 teams in the field? Some Big 12 teams have plenty of time to play catch-up before the regular season comes to a close. However, for now, the league is in pretty bleak shape from a postseason standpoint. Oklahoma is the only slam-dunk postseason squad right now with a solid RPI of 21 to go with a 27-6 overall record. However, the situation with the other teams isn't so hot. For instance, perennial power Texas once again has work to do down the stretch to make the NCAA postseason. The Longhorns fell short of a huge series win over Oklahoma last weekend. UT has an RPI of 51 with a poor overall resume, sitting at just 7-10 vs. RPI Top 100 clubs. Kansas (62) and Baylor (82) are in similar situations with the Longhorns, while Oklahoma State has some serious work to do down the stretch with an RPI of 108. Meanwhile, Kansas State narrowly made the field to become the Big 12's second postseason club. KSU has an RPI of 70, a 24-10 overall record, but even it only has a 6-7 mark vs. RPI Top 100. There's also preseason favorite TCU, which has a dismal RPI of 140.

* Who was next in line for a national seed? In order, South Carolina and Oregon were the two teams considered for the final national seed spot occupied now by Indiana. The Gamecocks narrowly missed the cut, while the Ducks have a bit more work to do. The Gamecocks have an RPI of 10 with a very good overall record, along with a solid 8-4 Southeastern Conference record. Furthermore, the Gamecocks are 5-1 vs. RPI Top 25, 6-4 vs. RPI Top 50 and 10-5 vs. RPI Top 100. UO has an RPI of 8, but has much work to do from a resume standpoint. The Ducks lead the Pac-12 with a 9-3 record right now, but also are just 4-6 vs. RPI Top 50 teams along with a 9-7 mark vs. RPI Top 100. Despite finishing just outside the top eight, both clubs are within striking distance.

* Who was next in line for a host spot? Several teams were considered for one of the elusive 16 NCAA Regional host sites, but only four truly were on the cusp -- Arkansas, Mississippi State, UCLA and Clemson. Arkansas has a very solid SEC record and good overall record. However, the Razorbacks are hampered by an RPI of 47 at this point. The Hogs, otherwise, have a solid overall resume with six wins vs. RPI Top 25 and a respectable 13-8 mark vs. RPI Top 100. A home series win over LSU this weekend would go a long way in improving that RPI. Mississippi State is right behind the Hogs in the pecking order, but must improve its mark vs. SEC teams, sitting at just 5-7 in league play right now. Otherwise, like Arkansas, the Bulldogs have a solid resume with a six wins vs. RPI Top 25 and a 10-9 mark vs. RPI Top 100. UCLA has a respectable Pac-12 record, but must improve its resume with a 2-6 mark vs. RPI Top 25 and 9-9 record vs. RPI Top 100, while Clemson is 9-6 in the ACC, but only 5-7 vs. RPI Top 25 and 10-9 vs. RPI Top 100. San Diego is another team to watch down the stretch. The Toreros have a solid RPI of 29, along with a 13-9 mark vs. RPI Top 100. Also keep an eye on Rice, which has a decent overall resume, but only has an RPI of 56 at this point.

* Most impressive and surprising league thus far? The usual suspects lead the latest Conference RPI figures, with the ACC holding the top spot and the SEC holding the No. 2 spot. But what about other leagues that have been impressive so far this spring? Keep an eye on the Sun Belt and Colonial Athletic Association. South Alabama, Florida Atlantic and Troy each have good RPIs and solid overall resumes, while Louisiana-Lafayette, which has an RPI of 39, narrowly missed the cut, thanks in part because of its 6-9 mark vs. RPI Top 100 clubs. Also keep an eye on Western Kentucky (86) and Middle Tennessee State (51) down the stretch. Meanwhile, in the CAA, Delaware (37) and UNC Wilmington (33) are clear-cut postseason teams right now, while William & Mary (31) is right on the cusp with a 7-7 mark vs. RPI Top 100.

* How do the Conference RPIs stack up? According to BoydsWorld.com, the conferences, from an RPI standpoint, are like this in order: ACC, SEC, Pac 12, Sun Belt, Big 12, Big Ten, Big West, CAA, C-USA, Southern, Big East, Southland, WCC, Big South, MVC, Mountain West, Atlantic Sun, WAC, Ohio Valley, Mid-American, America East, Atlantic 10, MAAC, Ivy League, Horizon, Summit, NEC, MEAC, Patriot, Great West, SWAC.

Out of that group, biggest surprise? Sun Belt … biggest disappointment? No, question, it's the West Coast Conference at 13. The league actually has several good teams, with Gonzaga (68), San Diego (28), BYU (40) and LMU (48) leading the charge. However, St. Mary's (270) and Santa Clara (277) are dragging down the RPI.

We have another update to the National Top-50 after two weeks of even more games being played in the southern states along with seasons just starting to kick off across the country. We’re quickly approaching another stellar high school event, the NHSI in Cary, and with that will come even more movement in these rankings. St. John Bosco (CA) continues to hold firm at the No. 1 position after a 4-0 start to their season. Venice (FL) has been rolling throughout the early portion of the year and jumps up to No. 2 in the country. One of the biggest movers in this update is The Bennett School (TX) jumping from unranked to No. 8 in the country after beating a handful of top ranked programs to start the year. To this point they have not only met those lofty expectations, but twenty games in they may have exceeded them. While there are plenty of high-level prospects up and down the lineup, with all that star power Vahn Lackey has stood out.
