VSA, Swamp Crowned Co-Champs

VSA, Swamp Crowned Co-Champs After Nine-Inning Battle

After three and a half hours under the hot Florida sun, VSA Sluggers 18 and Swamp Baseball’s City of Palms Championship battle ended in fitting fashion, with both teams sharing the title.



The two teams remained tied 9-9 through nine innings before lightning in the area brought the championship matchup to a halt Monday afternoon.

The two local programs have built a competitive rivalry, with several close matchups stemming from their proximity and familiarity with each other. Their history was evident throughout Monday’s matchup as emotions ran high, resulting in several heated exchanges and the eventual ejection of Swamp head coach Brian Porvaznik.

Just three weeks earlier, the two teams met in the championship game of the BCS Qualifier, where VSA earned a 6-4 victory. Swamp entered Monday’s matchup looking to flip the script while also defending its 18U City of Palms Championship title from a year ago.

Both teams entered the game 5-0 on the weekend.

Ryder Brown started strong on the mound for Swamp, setting the tone with a leadoff strikeout. He struck out two batters over 2.1 innings.

Junior Tome recorded VSA’s first hit of the game with a double to right field. The nationally ranked top 1,000 player continued to produce all day for the VSA offense, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.

An RBI single by Noah Torres scored the first run of the game to give VSA the early lead. Torres, a Miami-Dade College commit, earned MVP honors.

Alexis Pereira led VSA through six innings on the mound, tallying four strikeouts.

The umpiring crew stayed busy throughout the contest, issuing multiple warnings as emotions continued to rise.

Harrison Kabel entered in relief for Swamp in the top of the third inning. Kabel, a Daytona State College commit, is ranked in the top 1,000 nationally. He pitched one inning while striking out one batter.

An RBI single by Xavier Muentes gave VSA a 2-1 advantage.

Class of 2027 prospect Ely Mora led the way for Swamp’s offense, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. He hit .714 through five games. His two-RBI single in the bottom of the third gave Swamp a 5-2 lead, the largest of the game, and ignited the dugout as momentum swung in Swamp’s favor.

A double by Jadon Torres followed by a two-RBI single for Juan Angeles tied the game 5-5 in the top of the fourth. Following the rally, Swamp made several defensive adjustments, including Austin Schoolcraft entering as pitcher and multiple position changes across the field.

Schoolcraft, a nationally ranked top 500 player and Barry University commit, struck out one batter across 2.1 innings while getting his fastball up to 93 mph.

Trevor Jones hit an RBI triple in the top of the fifth inning to give VSA a 7-5 lead.

As the bottom of the fifth inning began and the game reached the two-hour mark, the fatigue began to show. Both teams had been playing since 8 a.m. and were competing for the fourth consecutive day in the Florida humidity.

The intensity reached a peak in the bottom of the fifth inning when Swamp head coach Brian Porvaznik was ejected following a heated exchange.

Porvaznik said he was proud of the way his team continued to focus and fight even after his ejection.

“They didn’t want to give up,” Porvaznik said. “A lot of teams just give up and they quit. They didn’t so I give them credit for that. They didn’t give up and they continued to play hard.”

Despite the conditions, both teams continued battling in pursuit of the championship title.

With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Hunter Fretwell came in strong out of the bullpen for Swamp, striking out his first batter to close the inning. Fretwell allowed three hits and one walk while striking out two batters over 3.1 innings, working consistently in the 76-79 mph range.

After RBIs from Maddux Wolff and Jonathan Kacinas, the game was tied 7-7.

“They just kept responding,” Porvaznik said. “They kept battling back. I was extremely happy with them. I give them a lot of credit for not giving up.”

Angeles took the mound for VSA in the seventh inning, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out two batters in three innings. He worked at 78-80 mph throughout his time on the mound.

A ground ball to second base ended the seventh inning. With the score still tied 7-7, the game went into extra innings with the contest approaching the three-hour mark.

Gabriel Garcia, who went 2-for-4 in the game, doubled with an RBI to give VSA an 8-7 lead. However, that lead did not last long as Kacinas singled with an RBI for Swamp to tie the game yet again.

“We kept scoring, they kept scoring,” Torres said. “It was back and forth.”

Still tied 8-8 after the eighth inning, the game moved into the ninth as neither team showed signs of slowing down.

An error by Swamp allowed Carson Honick to score, but that was quickly followed by a third and final out allowing Swamp another chance to claim the title.

As Logan Hawkins stepped to the plate, the intensity surrounding the matchup continued to grow. Hawkins hit an RBI single to tie the game 9-9, showing just how closely matched these two teams are.

Despite the heated exchanges and intensity that came with a championship matchup, the respect between the two neighboring teams never faded.

“It was awesome,” Torres said. “It was tiring but it was a lot of fun. We’re all buddies so it was really competitive. There wasn’t another team I would have rather gone 10 innings with.”

“I was very proud of the way they fought and kept coming back and tying it up and staying in the fight,” Porvaznik said.

As the players prepared to take the field for the 10th inning, the lightning alarm sounded across the park, bringing the back-and-forth battle to an unexpected halt. After three and a half hours of play, the teams decided to end in a tie and be crowned co-champions.

“It was tough, but it was a well-played game by both teams,” Torres said. “I think we both deserve it.”

After three days of competition, the 2026 BCS Challenge concluded with a championship matchup between AZBC 2027 EB and AZ Aztecs at Goodyear Ballpark. AZBC 2027 EB came out victorious with a 12-1 win for the tournament title. AZBC 2027 EB took control early, plating 4 runs in the 2nd inning after Aztecs put 1 on the board in the 1st. The offense continued to build momentum throughout the game, capitalizing on hitting and aggressive base running.
