Rethinking Baseball Warm-Ups:

A Call for Innovation

Let’s kick the old warm-up tradition to the curb, shall we?

Baseball has a reputation for being a sport rooted deeply in its customs, and while some traditions are worthy of preservation, one that needs a refreshing overhaul is the standard warm-up routine.

Picture this: an hour before the game, players jog a lap, gather to stretch in a circle, and then stand around playing catch. Does that really prepare anyone adequately for the mental and physical demands of pitching? In my view, it falls woefully short, and I’ll explain why.

The typical warm-up approach - running a lap, static stretching, and simply tossing a ball back and forth - doesn’t even scratch the surface of what’s necessary for optimal performance. This process often leaves pitchers feeling only 75% prepared, and that’s just not good enough at any level of competition. Instead of merely transitioning from a state of rest to activity, we must aim to "wake it up" before we "heat it up.”

Here’s the Truth: An efficient warm-up is crucial. It isn’t just about the arm; it involves the entire body, engaging muscles and nervous systems, fully preparing the athlete for explosive performance. Think of it this way: if you’re struggling in the first inning, consider whether you're really ready or if you simply plodded through a lackluster routine. It's high time we shift to a more personalized and dynamic approach!

Personalize Your Warm-Up: The warm-up should cater to the unique characteristics of each pitcher. No two pitchers are alike, and your warm-up shouldn’t be a “one-size-fits-all” application. For example, elite athletes like Trevor Bauer have demonstrated that a tailored, in-depth warm-up can yield remarkable results, allowing them to feel ready and ‘fully lathered’ before taking the mound.

I strongly encourage you to create and utilize three distinct warm-up routines:

1.    Ideally Perfect Warm-Up: This is your dream routine without any time constraints, incorporating all the elements that make you feel energized and ready to go.2.

3.    Shortened Warm-Up: A condensed version designed to get you revved up in 30 minutes - perfect for tight schedules.

4.    Emergency Warm-Up: When urgency strikes, having a 10-15 minute routine allows you to ramp up efficiently, especially in unpredictable game situations.

6.     Now, I get it, some may worry that an extensive warm-up will lead to fatigue; however, the real issue may lie in conditioning. If you find that a longer warm-up tires you out, it’s time to reassess your conditioning. Bottom line: effective preparation boosts not only performance but also long-term health.

Because baseball is so steeped in tradition and very slow to evolve, we have fallen behind other sports in terms of preparing the body for elite performance. It’s time baseball moves into the next level in terms of wake-up and warm-up. The evolution of warm-ups can prevent injuries and enhance performance, ultimately crafting pitchers who don’t just pitch, but excel.

Are You Fixated on the Wrong Variable? Why Pitch Count Alone Was Never Going to Prevent Arm Injuries   You know a family this happened to. You might be one. They did everything right. They followed the pitch count. They honored the rest days. They tracked innings. They sat him when the chart said sit. They were the parents who spoke up when a coach wanted one more inning in a bracket game. And he got hurt anyway. I've been working with throwers for a long time, and that conversation is the one I have quite often… A parent sitting across from me genuinely bewildered because they followed the rules and the rules did not work. They usually assume they missed something. Most of the time they didn't. They managed exactly what they were told to manage. The problem is that what they were told to manage is one variable out of four.   The Uncomfortable Part First   Throwing...

WWBA Underclass Scout Notes: Days 1-2 | Day 3 Hudson Covington (2028 Aliso Viejo, CA) has had himself a weekend at the dish, hitting an even .500 going into Championship Monday including a perfect 3-3 performance in the 2nd round of playoffs for TB SoCal. In just his 5th PG event, the uncommitted prospect is certainly making a name for himself with plenty of offensive tools to like. From the left side, Covington keeps the path direct and repeatable with a pull side & middle of the field approach displayed. He flashes high contact tool and does a great job of putting something in play with two strikes, limiting the swing/miss in the stroke with evident control of the barrel. WWBA Underclass Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Richard Cruz Iii (2028, Chandler, Ariz.) has had a good weekend offensively, driving balls to the gaps with consistency. The barrel accuracy and fast hands stand out as the swing is super direct to contact and he can whip it with consistency. Strength is clear for the coastal kid standing at 6-foot, 195 pounds with power generated from the lower half. Starting from a slightly crouched, quiet base, McRae displays dangerous barrel whip and to say he impacts it with authority would be an understatement. It’s safe to say he can put...
