PREMIUM: Sunday's RPI Report

Vanderbilt: After getting mystified by South Carolina starting pitcher Michael Roth in the series opener on Friday, the Commodores responded in impressive fashion on Saturday with a 6-4 triumph over the Gamecocks. Vandy starting pitcher Grayson Garvin allowed four runs in six innings, while offensively, freshman leadoff hitter Tony Kemp had an amazing 5-for-5 day at the plate. The VU win sets up an important rubber match on Sunday.

Georgia’s Michael Palazzone: The talented right-handed pitcher has always had high expectations with the Bulldogs, but he’s now meeting them this season. Palazzone led the Bulldogs to a series tying 7-2 win over Florida. The righty struck out six and allowed just a run on six hits in eight innings. Offensively, Georgia DH Brett DeLoach went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs. The series finale will determine where the Bulldogs sit in the SEC title race moving forward.

Texas Tech’s Trey Masek: Staring into the face of yet another marquee series loss, the Red Raiders needed a strong performance from the freshman right-handed pitcher against the Longhorns on Saturday. They got just what they needed in a 2-1 triumph over the Longhorns. Masek only struck out two batters, but allowed just two hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Raiders need to take care of business in the series finale to get back in good graces from a postseason resume standpoint.

N.C. State: The Wolfpack entered the weekend in dire straits from a postseason standpoint, desperately needing a series win over the Tar Heels to at least stay in the mix. Well, the Wolfpack are doing what they need to do this weekend, clinching a series win over the Tar Heels with an 8-7 triumph. Neither pitching staff performed at a high level, but offensively Chris Diaz, Cameron Conner and Pratt Maynard each finished the contest with two hits.

Baylor: After getting silenced in Waco on Friday by Texas A&M starting pitcher John Stilson, the Bears responded in huge fashion Saturday with a 12-1 triumph over the Aggies. BU starting pitcher Trent Blank allowed a run in 5 1/3 innings while reliever Max Garner allowed just a hit in 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Offensively, DH Dan Evatt had a huge day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. It sets up a crucial rubber match between the teams.

Oklahoma: The Sooners appeared to have Friday’s series opener in control before a crucial error opened the floodgates on the way to a loss. The Sooners, though, responded from the tough loss with an impressive 7-5 win on Saturday. OU catcher Tyler Ogle had a huge day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs, two runs scored and three RBIs, while Eric Ross and Caleb Bushyhead each finished the contest with two hits.

Washington State: The Cougars entered the season with incredibly high expectations, certainly expecting to reach an NCAA Super Regional. Instead, the Cougars’ nightmare season continued Saturday with an 8-2 loss to Arizona State. Cougars starting pitcher Chad Arnold was lifted early after allowing seven runs in 3 1/3 innings, while ASU starting pitcher Kramer Champlin tossed 6 1/3 solid innings. With the loss, the Cougars have a losing overall record with a 2-9 Pac-10 record.

Arkansas: It wasn’t long ago we said don’t expect the Razorbacks to struggle for too long with coach Dave Van Horn in charge. The Hogs, in turn, have finally gotten things going, and they recorded another series victory on Saturday with a 6-1 triumph over Mississippi State. Pitchers Randall Fant, Barrett Astin and Trent Daniel threw at a high level to lead the Hogs. With the win, the Hogs have now won six-straight conference games and eight overall.

Georgia Tech: Top draft prospect pitcher Jed Bradley didn’t leave an incredibly strong impression against Virginia last week. That trend continued Saturday in a 6-4 setback to Wake Forest. Bradley struck out eight hitters in five innings, but also allowed five runs on four hits in the losing cause. The Jackets likely need to beat the Demon Deacons in the series finale to stay in as a national seed next week.

Oregon State: There are few stories in college baseball better than that of the Beavers this season. OSU continued its impressive ways on Saturday with a great 8-1 triumph over Stanford. OSU starting pitcher Josh Osich struck out six and allowed just a run in six innings, while reliever Matt Boyd was fantastic in three shutout innings. The Beavers are in fantastic shape in the Pac-10 and are better positioning themselves for a national seed.

UCLA’s Trevor Bauer: After dropping the series opener to Arizona in tough fashion, the Bruins used a stellar performance by right-handed pitcher Trevor Bauer to beat the Wildcats 4-0. Bauer was simply sensational, striking out 13 and allowing just four hits in a complete game shutout. Offensively, Beau Amaral recorded three hits and Cody Regis collected two hits. Arizona starting pitcher Kyle Simon allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings. The win sets up a huge series finale.

Auburn: Both AU and LSU entered the weekend in situations where they needed to win an SEC series. Well, the Auburn Tigers are riding high right now after winning the first two games, Saturday’s game by a score of 3-1. Auburn starting pitcher Cory Luckie was fantastic, striking out nine and allowing just a run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. LSU, meanwhile, wasted a solid start from freshman Kevin Gausman, who allowed just three runs on five hits in 8 1/3 innings. While AU moved to .500 in the SEC, LSU dropped to 3-11.

Tulane: The Green Wave entered the seventh inning against Rice down 4-2 and staring into the face of another Conference USA series loss. However, they scored five runs the final two frames to beat the Owls 7-4. Tulane starting pitcher Drew Zizinia allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings, while reliever D.J. Ponder put together a great outing, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Offensively, Frank Florio collected two hits and knocked in two runs. The Green Wave now has a chance to earn back-to-back important series wins.

St. John’s: The Johnnies still have a plethora of work to do, but they’re at least back in the NCAA postseason discussion after taking the first two games from Louisville. The Johnnies clinched a series win on Saturday with a 6-5 triumph. Starting pitcher Kevin Kilpatrick allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings, while at the plate, Paul Karmas knocked in a pair of runs. Earning a series sweep over the Cards would be a huge feat for the Johnnies.

Memphis: Head coach Daron Schoenrock has his team playing at a high level at the right time of the season. The Tigers raised some eyebrows last weekend with a home series win over Southern Mississippi. They’re doing it again this weekend on the road against UAB. The Tigers clinched a series win over the Blazers on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep that featured strong pitching. Memphis is 5-3 in conference and could soon enter the postseason discussion with an RPI of 63.

Central Florida: The Knights received a poor start from Ben Lively in the series opener against East Carolina, but rebounded Saturday with starter Brian Adkins leading the way. Adkins allowed just two runs on seven hits in seven innings in a 3-2 triumph over East Carolina. Reliever Joe Rogers also performed at a high level, tossing two scoreless frames to end the game. Both teams need to win the series finale to help their postseason chances.

Creighton: The Bluejays continue to put together solid performances. They used timely hitting to take care of Indiana State 9-5 on Saturday. Nick Judkins and Trever Adams led the Jays at the plate. Judkins collected two hits, one a home run, while Adams hit a home run and went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. With the win, the surging Jays improved to 25-7 overall, 4-1 in the Missouri Valley. It’s time for everyone to start noticing these guys.

Clemson: The Tigers have had an incredibly up and down campaign, and entered the weekend in need of a road series win over Boston College. The Tigers got that and more. They finished off a three-game sweep of the Eagles by sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 7-5 and 9-2. With the sweep, the Tigers improved to 22-13 overall and finally .500 in ACC play. We’ll see if this weekend’s result gets the Tigers going moving forward.

California: The Golden Bears suffered a tough road series loss to Arizona last weekend, but have responded in impressive fashion this weekend. They won the series opener against Washington before clinching the series Saturday with an 8-2 triumph. Cal starting pitcher Justin Jones allowed just two runs on eight hits in eight innings, while second baseman Tony Renda led the offense with three hits, one a double, and three RBIs. The Golden Bears have a solid 22-9 record.

Alabama: The Crimson Tide entered the weekend in great shape in the SEC West, but has taken a step back with a pair of losses to Tennessee this weekend. The Crimson Tide dropped Saturday’s contests by scores of 2-1 and 1-0 behind strong pitching by the Volunteers. With the losses, the Tide is down to 37 in the RPI. ‘Bama definitely needs to take the home series finale to stay in good graces.

Elon: The Phoenix is showing this weekend why they’re the leader in the Southern Conference. They won the series opener on Friday before defeating the Cougars again on Saturday 5-4. Elon starting pitcher Dylan Clark was lifted after allowing four runs in four innings, while reliever Jared Kernodle struck out four and allowed just two hits in five shutout innings. While the Phoenix now has a 14-3 mark in conference, the disappointing Cougars are .500 in league action.

Texas State: After losing the series opener to Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, the Bobcats needed a strong performance from starting pitcher Mitchell Pitts on Saturday. They got that on the way to an impressive 4-0 shutout win. Pitts struck out four and allowed just three hits in a complete game performance. Offensively, first baseman Casey Kalenkosky went 3-for-4 and hit his 13th home run. The two teams now have a huge series finale that is important from a postseason standpoint.

SFA: The Lumberjacks have a horrible RPI, but that hasn’t kept them from reaching their goals in the Southland Conference so far this season. SFA clinched a road series win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with an 18-8 triumph. SFA leadoff hitter Bryson Myles led the way with a 4-for-5 day that included four runs scored, a double, triple and two RBIs. Six more Lumberjack sluggers chipped in multi-hit performances. The ‘Jackets are an impressive 12-5 in league play.

Western Kentucky: The Hilltoppers are helping their NCAA postseason case so far this weekend. They swept a doubleheader from Arkansas State on Saturday by scores of 3-2 and 13-2. Starting pitchers Tanner Perkins and Justin Hageman performed at a high level in the two games. WKU, which has an impressive 10-4 league record, now aims for the series sweep on Sunday.

Loyola Marymount: The Lions suffered a heartbreaking loss to Gonzaga in the series opener, but left no doubt in Game 2 with a 9-4 victory. LMU starting pitcher Alex Gillingham allowed four runs in 8 1/3 innings, while at the plate, Matt Koch and Jason Barmasse each collected two hits and two RBIs. First baseman Bret Dahlson added three hits and two RBIs. The winner of Sunday’s rubber match has the inside track to the WCC title.

San Diego: The Toreros have had a dismal campaign, but finally have a reason to smile this weekend. They spanked Pepperdine in the series opener on Friday before winning a 4-3 pitcher’s duel on Saturday to clinch a series win over the Waves. USD starting pitcher Calvin Drummond allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings, while relievers Paul Paez and Paul Sewald combined to throw 3 2/3 shutout innings. Kudos to the Toreros for staying tough through some difficult times.

UC Irvine: The Anteaters had little trouble taking care of Pacific on Friday, but Saturday with a different story with the Tigers claiming a 6-4 triumph. UCI starting pitcher Andrew Thurman was lifted after allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings, while Pacific’s Marcus Pointer and Chris Larsen teamed up for some solid performances. Irvine isn’t a clear-cut NCAA postseason team and needs to win the series finale over the Tigers.

Premier Invite Scout Notes

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Tripp Merren (‘29 TX) with a pair of missiles off the barrel today including a no-doubt 2-run 💣 and triple later both to RCF. Electric bat speed with easy strength off the barrel. Can really scoot around bases. #PremierInvite pic.twitter.com/VUEHQZ0bmM — Perfect Game Texas (@Texas_PG) July 3, 2026 Tripp Merren (2029, Houston, Texas) took home MVP honors enroute to a big championship win for the Houston Texans Astros Scout Team. Merren stands in at 6-foot-0 from a pretty physical frame at this age. He has the athleticism to go with it and already looks like he has filled out a good bit. Merren fits the mold as a true power hitting corner guy but can play all over on the dirt. He finished the week going 9-15 that included two doubles, a triple, and two homers. He also drove in seven runs and scored nine times. Talk about a complete week and Tripp was simply in the heart of...

16u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 2

Perfect Game Staff

16u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 ‘28 Rylan Jenkins (GA) hits the bottom of the CF wall for a 2-RBI double; great rhythm to the stroke w/ lots of easy strength in the barrel. 6.46 runner. @BravesScout16u #WWBA @PG_Georgia pic.twitter.com/oxSt7fvsUw — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 7, 2026 Rylan Jenkins (2028, Tennille, Ga.) found a few loud barrels Tuesday morning, sending a pair of hard liners off the outfield wall. He drove in four runs and crossed home three times himself. The 5-foot-9 lefty hitter takes a smooth path to the baseball with excellent rhythm to the operation. He generates lots of easy strength at the point of contact and consistently produces high exit velocities to the pull-side and middle of the field. Jenkins is extremely twitchy and gets down the line in a hurry. He runs a 6.46 sixty and turns doubles into triples often. Tripp Sapp (2028, Loganville,...

13u World Series Notes: Days 3-5

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
13u World Series Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Chaysten Fuentes (2030, Ewa Beach, HI) worked really well from the right side of the plate ending up with five hits and a double in the last two days. The right handed hitting Hawaiian has a ton of strength to the body. The hands work directly to the ball and can hit to all fields in the approach. Has done an incredible job getting the barrel to almost everything and gets on plane in the turn.  Triston Valdez (2031, Castaic, CA) was electric on day four batting .500 with a double, triple, and five rbis. The barrel is really quick to the ball and works with a level path. Against NY Gotham 13u Ghost, Valdez would not be denied demolishing the bases clearing triple way back into the RCF gap. Stays inside the baseball consistently with the hands and torques it hard.  Christopher Julian Leija (2031, Weslaco, TX) really showed out the last two...

Tristan Barton (‘29, TX) has struck out three over three scoreless innings of work, getting a lively FB up to 89. Mixed in a sharp vt CB w/ late bite. Operates from a projectable RH frame w/ length + room to fill. #NatElite @Texas_PG pic.twitter.com/LXfkLOtxdo — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 5, 2026 Tristan Barton (’29, Gunter, TX) turned in a strong start on Sunday, lasting four innings of one run ball, striking out four. Barton operates from a bigger lengthy right-handed frame with considerable room to fill. He starts with a mid-body handset before working to the belt and into a high compact leg lift. Barton fires down via a compact arm action and high three quarters slot. The Texas native got a run/ride fastball up to 89, living in the mid-80s throughout the outing. He mixed in a sharp 12-6 curveball with vertical depth and late bite. Jack Graviss...

Nolan Ash (2028, Ashland, Mo.) showed off the power upside for Natty State 2028. The right-handed hitter starts from a spread stance with in-line feet and a high handset with a high back elbow, utilizes a leg lift stride. Creates separation and uses a direct hand path with a slightly uphill bat plane and some feel to generate lift from the lower half. Quick hands and stays in-sync with a rotational lower half and solid bat speed. Showed the power belting a solo bomb over the left field fence. Long and lean 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame with wiry strength present and more room to fill. The shortstop has a high ceiling and feel for the barrel. Colton Dodds (2028, Columbia, Mo.) showed off the barrel feel and power upside for Natty State 2028. Coppy's Corner: July 7 Summer Edition

John Coppolella
Article Image
It’s an exciting time for College Baseball. Not only do potential and proposed changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) elevate the game, but we are coming off a thrilling College World Series and less than a week away from Major League Baseball’s 2026 Amateur Draft. In the middle of it all is the Cape Cod Baseball League.  The amateur players on the Cape are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th  through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and...
