643 DP Last Team Standing at East WS

Following a dominant week at the 17u PG East World Series, No. 34 ranked 643 DP Cougars 17u capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating No. 2 ranked East Cobb Astros 17u, 3-2, in the championship game to claim the title. The Cougars earned the tournament's No. 1 overall seed after outscoring opponents by an absurd 59-6 throughout the week before completing their championship run with a hard-fought victory in the finale.

“Always feels great to finish the year playing your best ball, especially when going up against strong competition,” 643 Head Coach Danny Pralgo said. “We did so many of the little things right: on the mound with location, clean on defense, bunting, 2 strike approach leading to long at bats, getting hit-by-pitches, and we had so many good outs offensively that led to moving a runner or scoring a runner. And when those things all come together in an event, it leads to special runs like this. This only happens because of the dedication of all the coaches at 643 and the players that are willing to grind for 1 day at a time for 12 months."



Roshan Bullard received the opening nod for his 643 squad and worked in the upper 80s in the opening frame while working through early trouble. A walk allowed followed by a double from East Cobb shortstop Hayes Maginnis put a pair of runners in scoring position with just one out, but Bullard was able to prevent a crooked number from being recorded while just allowing one run by way of a RBI groundout from center fielder Carson Bruce.

Auburn commit, Collin Thomas was named East Cobb's starter and made quick work of his opponents in the first inning, tossing a 1-2-3 frame with one strikeout to hold his team's early 1-0 lead.

East Cobb catcher, Takumi Yoshida led off the second inning by ripping a single to right field, but Bullard quickly settled down to record his first scoreless inning of the outing after forcing a pair of groundouts and a swinging punchout.

Jackson Allen, 643's first baseman, put his team on the board and evened the championship contest at 1 run a piece with a towering home run to the pull side, clearing the right field wall by a large margin.

“We were down a run so really I was just looking to get on base,” Allen said on his at-bat before his monster home run. “I got ahead 2-0 so at that point I figured I would get a good pitch to hit and was looking for something over the plate with the idea that if it was there, I was going to put my best swing on it. He threw me a knee-high fastball right

over the middle, and I gave it my A swing and caught a barrel. It felt great to see it go over the fence. It was hot and as a team we were dragging a bit at that point so feel like it energized us. We were really locked in the rest of the game."

Thomas was able to not let the long ball rattle him though as he retired the next two batters to send the game into the third inning in a 1-1 deadlock.

For the second inning in a row, East Cobb began their frame at the plate with a leadoff single, but could not bring the runner across the plate, and 643 headed to bat with a prime chance to continue their momentum.

The offense was able to do just that as shortstop Jayden Whiteside drove a ball into the left center gap to cash in a runner who got on after drawing a walk, and 643 took a 2-1 lead despite recording just two hits all game so far.

East Cobb fought back in the fourth inning as Bruce led off the inning with a hustle double into right field, marking the third straight inning the Astros opened with a base hit. This time, they were finally able to capitalize as a dropped third strike moved Bruce to third base, and an errant throw allowed the tying run to score.

Ashton Clare entered the game in relief in the home half of the fourth inning for Thomas and the Astros and shut down the heart of 643's order with a perfect frame in his first inning of work to keep the score at 2-2 before the fifth inning commenced.

Bullard was able to match his opponent's perfect frame with a 1-2-3 inning of his own with help from first baseman, Jackson Allen, who made a brilliant diving catch to end the top of the fifth inning.

Clare continued his hot start on the mound with a four-pitch inning to mark the first complete inning in which no team scored so far this ballgame.

Bullard was removed from his great outing in the middle of the leadoff at-bat, going 5.0 innings while allowing just 1 earned run on 4 hits and striking out 3 opponents.

“It was incredible," Bullard said on completing his dominant performance while helping set up a great spot for his team to win. "I knew going into the game that it was going to be my last travel ball game and I left it all out on the field."

Cal Pearson was the name called from the bullpen and picked up right where Bullard left off by striking out the first batter he faced and induced two more pop flies to exit the inning.

East Cobb tossed a scoreless inning for the third straight frame as Clare completed his third straight perfect inning of work on an impressive number of just 25 pitches.

The Astros threatened to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning as a single from Yoshida and a walk drawn put a runner in scoring position with two outs, but on a full count Pearson got out of the inning with a popup and set up a walk-off opportunity for his squad in the home half of the seventh.

643 was able to move the winning run in scoring position as well with a hit-by-pitch and single putting runners on first and second with one out, and the Astros were forced to make a pitching change after Clare allowed his first runners of the game. Yoshida entered the game on the mound and proceeded to walk the bases loaded which led catcher Jackson Loy to step up to the plate with an opportunity to walk-off the game in regulation. Loy made contact with the first pitch he saw and sent the fastball to right field, allowing the winning run to cross the plate on a sacrifice fly. 643 officially ended their summer season on a high note as champions.

"It was truly a team effort to record the win," Loy said after clinching the win. "You can’t have a sac fly with nobody on base. Since it was most the guy's last summer ball game and season, it was good to come off with a championship win against a really good Astros squad."

"I’m so proud of my team and how we’ve played all summer! This was the best way we could have ended the season," Bullard said on ending the season with a victory.
