Recruiting Notebook: January 6

Photo: Griffin Boesen (Perfect Game)

Griffin Boesen, Class of 2027
Commitment: Duke

Another top 100 prospect is off the board as the Corey Muscara led Duke Blue Devils picked up a physical two-way prospect in Boesen out of Florida recently. At 6-foot-5, 205 pounds, Boesen looks the part of a middle of the order type slugger and he's just that, showing lots of looseness and bat speed in his left-handed stroke and is coming off a Jupiter where he hit .700 (!!) as an underclassman while driving in 10 runs. The bat-to-ball skills are obvious as he simply hit at all the big stops in 2025, but he's also a left-hander on the bump who has been upwards of 88 mph with a clean arm stroke and consistent feel to spin and land a breaking ball in the zone. For Duke, Boesen is the highest ranked prospect of their '27 group with his No. 100 ranking and is their 4th player ranked within Perfect Game's top 500.

Genei Sato, RHP, Class of 2027
Commitment: Penn State

Penn State experienced a massive recruiting win when they landed Japanese righty Genei Sato late last month. Sato joins the likes of Stanford first baseman Rintaro Sasaki in transitioning to college baseball in the United States, a trend that is expected to continue. The Sendai University transfer, unlike true freshman Sasaki, will come to America for his age 22 season. Sato works from a medium frame, starting above the belt before utilizing a pronounced and hanging leg lift. He fires down the mound via a standard arm action and high three quarters slot. Sato’s repertoire starts with a power fastball that has seen triple digits, possessing run/ride traits. His secondaries include a devastating splitter that produces whiffs and is regarded as his best offering. Sato rounds out his pitch mix with a pair of distinct breaking balls, starting with a tighter gyro slider. He also offers a curveball with more vertical depth.

Rowan Walker, 3B/RHP, Class of 2027
Commitment: Winthrop

Walker recently announced his commitment to Winthrop, landing the Eagles a talented two-way recruit. The State College native works from a medium right-handed frame with strength present. He starts with a high handset before working into a high and compact leg lift, firing down the mound via a high three-quarters slot. Walker has seen the low-90s with the heater, topping at 91, while mixing in a sweeping breaking ball. At the plate, he starts with a wide base and keeps the hands close, utilizing an inward toe tap leg load. Walker has shown impact ability with the bat, spraying barrels throughout the yard.

Cole Ryherd, SS, Class of 2027
Commitment: Southern Illinois-Edwardsville

Nice midwest addition to the SIUE class with Ryherd, picking up a gamer that should stick up the middle on the dirt at the next level of the game. He’s more quick than fast with a linedrive stroke that can work contact to all fields, showing an ability to cover the zone and adjust the barrel head all over the zone. He may kick over to second down the line, but that is still to be determined. He would earn All Tournament Team honors down in Fort Myers during the Underclass World Championship with Spects National, hitting 9-21 (.429) with thirteen RBI, thirteen walks and four stolen bases. Solid player.

Gary Staffins, RHP, Class of 2026
Commitment: Young Harris

Staffins came to the ‘24 Southeast Uncommitted showcase over a year and a half ago at this point and impressed with his raw arm strength for his size and pitchability. Fast forward to now, and Staffins has officially committed to Young Harris. He’s thrown a good share of innings in back to back years now, showing an ability to pound the zone and put bats away (50 SO/23.1 IP). The velocity has crept upwards and his fastball now sits in the mid 80’s with a good low 70’s downer hook that plays well off the heater. Look for him to grow, fill out his frame and compete for innings with Young Harris.

Dawson Radaszewski, SS, Class of 2026
Commitment: Westmont College

Proportionally built left-handed hitting shortstop recently inked his commitment to Westmont College. Another peach state product, Radaszewski will be joining a really solid Division II program out west in Santa Barbara, California. He’s hit for average the last three years on the travel circuit with a reliable glove up the middle on the dirt. He will be a key cog his senior year with Holy Innocents, who will look to push even further into the playoffs in ‘26.

Trey Windham, OF, Class of 2026
Commitment: Young Harris

Windham is another Georgia prep that committed to Young Harris recently, building up a quality class of players headed to north Georgia next summer. He would attend the Georgia Jackets org showcase in late May and would impress, leaving the event with a PG 9 after having a monster ‘24 year on volume. He’s athletic with physical projection with a chance for some more impact in the stick once he fills out the lean frame. There is natural lift in his swing. Defensively, he projects best to the corners in the outfield grass.

Ryland Perry, RHP, Class of 2026
Commitment: Calhoun CC

Perry was good all year long, culminating in a commitment to Calhoun. He’s got good size at 6’4/205 with a smooth, repeatable motion down the slope and a simple arm stroke that gets up on time. He routinely works in the mid to upper 80’s, with his spin arsenal consistently ticking up. Easy to bet on the size, strikes and progression he continues to make.

Caleb Griffin, CIF, Class of 2026
Commitment: Calhoun CC

Following in the footsteps of his high school teammate Perry, Griffin also committed to Calhoun recently. He has really come on with the stick as of late, showing legitimate impact and the ability to slug right now. He is a good defender at third with solid arm strength across, and should have every chance to stick at the hot corner after high school. The bat has become easy to buy into, as he walked more than he K’d at Perfect Game events this year. For the cherry on top, Griffin would end the fall on a roll. He would earn All Tournament Team honors in the Southeast Cup and down in Jupiter to wrap his ‘25 up.

Drew Harmon, RHP, Class of 2026
Commitment: Northwest Florida

Harmon finds a really nice landing spot after high school, committing to NWF back in mid November. He routinely sits in the upper 80’s and will touch low 90’s with the fastball, mixing in both a mid 70’s curve with some bite and a low 80’s change. Physical 6’2/205 frame with size throughout the build. Harmon will be competing for innings right away now.

Ben Dupuch, C/RHP, Class of 2026
Commitment: Daytona State College

A nice showing over the summer at National Uncommitted earned Dupuch a 9 grade, parlaying that into a solid summer and eventual commitment to Daytona State. He’s got some two way intrigue right now, as he has reached 90-mph on the mound and makes for a solid receiver and catch/throw asset behind the dish as well. If Dupuch can continue to make strides with the stick, then you’re getting a reliable backstop who can handle himself in the box while providing the club with good everyday caliber defense in the catcher position. He has the frame to add on more muscle as well.

Omari Burse, SS, Class of 2027
Commitment: UAB

UAB did a fantastic job in securing Burse, who provided tons of upside as an athletic, projectable infielder with more to come across the board in regards to all of his tools. It will be interesting to see how the leverage and in-game power output develops with his current low hand set/level swing plane mechanics, but the bat speed and rotational acceleration are impressive for his age and more will come as he matures. He’s got a good arm and the feet are smooth on the dirt. Burse has done nothing but hit for average at Perfect Game events and ‘25 was no different, hitting .439 over a solid sample. Really good prospect from south Georgia to keep tabs on over the next year as he continues to develop. Tools here.

Jackson Bernosky, C, Class of 2027
Commitment: Gonzaga

Bernosky has impressed at 5x showcases now, with a nice performance at Junior National helping spring his summer into another gear and into an eventual commitment with Gonzaga. He’s long shown feel behind the plate with good hands that can steal strikes and handle velocity, while showing solid average arm strength that keeps improving with a clean and quick exchange. The bat is next in line, and it continues to improve at a steady clip. He’s getting stronger seemingly at every new event we get to see him. There is more physical projection here, and he possesses good athleticism for a catcher.

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
With a postseason run for the ages, the Oklahoma Sooners (43-23) took home the National Championship and naturally finish the 2026 season as our No. 1 team in the land.  It is the third national title for the Sooners, playing in their 12th CWS and making their fourth championship series appearance.  They add to previous national titles won in 1951 and 1994 and did it by taking the most difficult path of any team in this year’s tournament.  In the NCAA Tournament, Oklahoma took down national seeds, No. 2 Georgia Tech twice, No. 3 Georgia twice, No. 5 UNC twice, No. 7 Alabama and No. 15 Kansas twice.  This was the second time that head coach Skip Johnson has led the Sooners to the CWS Championship Series since 2022 and the first time he has taken home the crown.  The North Carolina Tarheels (54-14) was one win away from their first national title and finish...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

Emily Hicks
Article Image
JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...
