Panama City Classic Scout Note Recap

JC Vanek Chipola- Throughout the weekend Vanek strung together competitive at-bat after competitive at-bat including starting the weekend with a backside homer. Easily one of the most polished hitters in the country with a real chance to be a difference maker at the next level whether that's in Tallahassee for the Noles or at the professional ranks.

Luke Williams Chipola- Best way to kick off the PCB classic? How ‘bout an inside-the-park home run. Williams has a rhythmic left-handed stroke with good feel for the barrel. He also has good plate discipline and enough speed to apply pressure on the base paths.

Miguel Hugas Chipola- Impressive showing from the two-way playing Hugas. Offensively, he was all over the barrel including a bomb and multiple extra base hits. It's a simple left-handed stroke that can impact it line to line. On the mound it's a free and loose delivery that creates good angle to the fastball (90-93), Mixes in a good low 80’s changeup and sharp two plane slider.

Collin Guerra Chipola- The middle infielder has been a name on our radar since his days as a Kansas prep. There’s a complete skillset to his game. Advanced and smooth actions up the middle with tons of feel to hit and a bit of sneaky pop in the stick. Laid down a perfect drag bunt in the championship that really turned the tide for Chipola.

Trenton Lape Chipola- The LSU transfer drew the Saturday night start for Chipola and while the start may have not been the total shutout that he wanted, the stuff showed really well. Simple and well repeated delivery with feel for all 4 pitches in the arsenal. Creates good carry to the fastball, mostly 92-94. Utilizes an upper 80s cut, a slider, and a changeup as well. Certainly on his way back to the division 1 level.

Lucas Glendinning Indian River State- Highly projectable 6’6 frame with long levers and good stuff to match. Fastball (90-93) plays firmer than the number with the extension the frame creates. Flashed good feel the off speed throughout the outing and is a good name to follow throughout the spring on a very strong Indian River team.

Jake Weatherspoon Indian River State- Loved the right-handed swing throughout the sample in Panama City. Good rhythm to the load with bat speed, power, and tons of feel to barrel. Made his impact felt throughout.

Amir Streeter Dyersburg State- A name that popped on the scene a year ago at the event and continues to trend positively. Even as more of an undersized outfielder, Streeter possesses impressive power while getting the barrel on it a bunch. Open up inside our preseason Top 500 and solidified his spot over the weekend.

Devin Mitchell Flo-Dar- Batting in the heart of one of the best lineups in Juco baseball is a testament to the impact that Mitchell can have at the plate. Coming off an impressive freshman campaign, Mitchell opened the 2025 season with a strong showing in Panama City Beach. Athleticism stands out and the bat speed is as real as any at the level. He looks primed to post another other worldly slash line in 2025.

Mike Joyce Flo-Dar- Even though Joyce pitched to a velocity a touch under what was expected in his Game 1 start, there’s still a lot to be excited about. It's a big durable build that gets down the mound well with a firm heater and a sharp biting more horizontal shaped slider. He’s going to be extremely tough on right-handed hitters throughout his career with that type of breaking stuff and he showed major flashes of that cornerstone trait in this look.

Josh Campos Flo-Dar- Compact athlete with bat speed and strength. Campos possesses table setter capabilities and is primed for another strong season to close out his juco career. Committed to Liberty.

Jack Reynolds Gulf Coast State – The left-handed hitting shortstop impressed on both sides of the ball. Defensively, opened up the weekend with terrific sliding grab deep in the hole with perfect delivered throw on a hop. The left-handed stroke is smooth with a rhythmic load and tons of feel to barrel. Reynolds impact will mostly show through the gaps, but I’d expect a handful of homers mixed in throughout the 2025 season. Committed to South Carolina.

Cooper Whited Gulf Coast State- The southpaw drew the opening game start and the Panama City Beach Classic and impressed with his overall feel to pitch. Fastball will live in the upper 80’s- low 90’s but it plays way up off the feel to execute two off speed pitches at a high level. He shows the ability to pitch backwards while also maintaining the ability to put people away with the breaking stuff late in counts. Curveball has a bunch of depth and presents a challenging eye level change for opposing bats.

Ezequiel Rojas Gulf Coast State- Pitching in a relief role to open the season Rojas looked as sharp as ever. Love the operation here, it's a long, fluid and tension free stroke with ease out of the hand. Mostly 90-93 with the running heater. Slider has missed a bunch of bats over his time in Juco ball and should continue to compile with across the Panhandle throughout 2025.

Trey Swiderski John A Logan- Coming into the event Swiderski was a name we had circled. Appropriately placed inside out top 100 the stick showed its impact immediately. Hit one of the more impressive bombs of the weekend with his opening game top spun shot that landed in the pond over the left-field fence. Lean well-proportioned strength creates legit bat speed and strength that plays well through the barrel. Locked in for 15+ homers across the state of Illinois and beyond in 2025. Committed to Purdue.

Jaden Hart John A Logan- Head Coach Kyle Suprenant sang the praises of Hart in a preseason phone call so he was another that the PGJC crew was excited to get eyes on for the first time. Hart did not disappoint.  He registered 4 hits on the weekend with 3 runs batted in and a pair of swipes. He showed innate feel on the bases with the legs to get a bag at will. Even at a smaller stature, Hart has the tools to impact a game.

Austin Wiegand John A Logan- No better way to open the year up than with a pair of PCB bombs. Wiegand has a violent left-handed stroke with intent to do damage in there. The load gets him in a good position to fire and can create very loud impact at front when he is as synced up as he was this weekend. Juco name to track through the spring for the Vols.

Peyton Fowler Meridian- A name we were familiar with going into the weekend, but I don’t think any of us scouts expected Fowler to be as good as he was. The lean athletic frame is highly projectable, and the stuff is already loud. It’s a quick arm and up-tempo delivery. Although the results weren’t the best, I think he stood out to all as one of the big winners of the weekend. Sat 92-94 early with tons of life through the zone. Slider is hard biting with an extra gear to the late horizontal action that produces swing and miss. Flashed a tighter gyro type early in counts a few times. Like that as well. Expect a big jump when we update the rankings around midseason.

Qrey Lott Northwest Florida- Coming into last season Lott was on the radar of many after turning down a late round selection in 2023 draft but the difference a year has made for Lott has been noteworthy. A year ago, the swing needed some work and left me unsure if he was going to barrel it enough to let the standout athleticism play. This year he is getting it on the barrel a bunch with a much more efficient swing and some added strength. Crushed everything in sight throughout the 4-game sample including a long home run.

Alex Walsh Northwest Florida- The Sophomore right-hander pitches with a ton of confidence on the hill. Clean athletic delivery is well repeated. Fastball is mostly in the upper 80s and should pepper the low 90s as the season progresses. Good feel for two separate off-speed pitches. The slider varies between a more horizontal look and tighter two plane action, plenty of feel to spin it and can execute in all counts. Changeup is a weapon vs. left-handed hitter with heavy arm side action and late depth.

Henry Allen Northwest Florida- Hard to argue anyone else was better than Allen over the weekend. Flashed huge bat speed and light tower power in his first couple games at the collegiate level. If the swing and miss stays to a minimum in 2025, he will be regarded as one of the most impactful bats anywhere in the country. Finished the event with 8 hits, 2 doubles, a triple, and a pair of homers.

Ira Jeffries-Harris Northwest Florida- The switch-hitting freshman showed extremely well batting at the top of the NWF order. There’s real feel to barrel in a clean left-handed stroke and showed significant power on his long pull side bomb over the weekend. Got it on the barrel in the gap from the right-side as well. There are some questions about where he fits defensively but pure hit ability from both sides is going to put a number of eyes on him throughout his time in JC ball.

Topher Jones Pearl River- One of my favorites going back to his time as a Shortstop and QB at Hernando High school. Jones for years has shown innate feel for the game on both sides. Playing third base for the Wildcats seems like a very nice fit, the athletic profile should allow him to stick at the hot corner. Offensively, its a simple approach that won’t get overwhelmed by the better arms at collegiate level. Showed high quality feel to hit with line drives from pole to pole over the weekend. He should continue to develop more in game power over the next couple seasons as well. One player that I felt very comfortable being aggressive with in our opening rankings and the number 12 overall player in JC baseball.

Jacob Keys Pearl River- The Southeastern LA commit shined behind the plate throughout the look. The hands are elite, and the catch and throw ability is there as well. Offensively, its a heavy barrel that can impact it to all fields. Well rounded profile that the SELA staff must be elated to have signed going into his sophomore season.

Patrick Spencer Pearl River- Coming off TJ in 2024 this was a big first look at Spencer for us. Checks all the prospect boxes, big physicality with dominant stature and huge stuff. Clean operation with mid to upper 90s gas in the tank. There’s still some growing that needs to be done on the mound as far as command and execution but has the makings of the best arm at the level when it all comes together.

Jaxon Milam Pearl River- On a roster littered with Division 1 transfers Milam stood out as one of the cornerstone pieces on the roster. Smooth defensive actions up the middle with bat speed and feel to hit from the left-side, and wheels that can impact a game on the bases. It will be interesting to see as the season progresses how much power he hits for because there’s makings of a potential 5 tool left-handed hitting middle infielder here.

Jacob Johnson Pearl River- In preseason discussions Head Coach Michael Avalon mentioned Johnson as a guy we were going to want to put on the board and get a closer look at to open the season in PCB. Glad we got the look. Johnson is long and loose with huge arm speed and high-octane stuff. Ran it up into the mid 90s with a wipeout slider behind it. A year ago, McLennan pitcher Clayton Freshcorn was the name that blew up at the event in similar fashion and now he’s pitching for the College World Series runner-up Texas A&M Aggies.

Allan Gil-Fernandez State College of Florida- The durable right-hand hitting infielder may his impact felt with a long pull side bomb over the weekend in his many barrels. Gil-Fernandez may not have the middle of the field athleticism that many of these other writeups do, but he is going on his second year as being one of the best hitters in the region with the best arms. Exudes offensive polish and should be a major impact player for the Manatees throughout the 2025 campaign.

Hayden Gustavson State College of Florida- A name lesser known to the PGJC crew heading into the weekend but was one we quickly became familiar with early in the event. The right-handed swing has rhythm, bat speed, barrel skills and a bunch of pop. Gustavson is a primary catcher that shows solid skills behind the dish but can pop out and play the field to keep his name on the lineup card for a full set. Now a name we have circled throughout the spring and will be receiving a sizable bump when the rankings update at midseason.

Trey Reinburg Wabash Valley- The athletic right-hander drew the opening game start for WVC and impressed right away against a strong opposing lineup. The upper 80s/low 90s heater showed excellent running life through the zone with a good slider backing it up. Throughout the season he should rack up whiffs across Illinois and pronounce himself as one of the better arms anywhere in the Midwest. Real gamer traits and swagger on the hill.

Cape Cod League Notebook: July 18

Brandon Shannon | Fr. | RHP | Louisville | Bourne Braves  The freshman right-hander possesses arguably the most electric arm on the Cape, pairing a lean, projectable frame with plenty of room to continue adding strength. Shannon worked an effortless 96-98 mph throughout the outing with premium arm speed. His mid-80s slider generates plenty of swing-and-miss, while his 92-93 mph power changeup gives him a quality third offering to neutralize left-handed hitters. After flashing premium stuff during his freshman season at Louisville, Shannon has carried that arsenal into the summer and possesses the type of arm talent to develop into a Day 1 draft prospect as he continues refining his command and overall polish.    Another look at 1B/P Josiah Overbeek (@HailStateBB) Pull side RBI single here. @BourneBraves https://t.co/YA17RJnFo8 pic.twitter.com/Jw7iDMliZG — PG College...

Hudson Sage (’29, Houston, TX) had a strong start to his event, collecting three hits to drive in four including a pair of doubles. Sage operates from a medium right-handed frame with a mix of length and strength, displaying athleticism. He starts with a wide base, keeping the hands high and active, working into a deep inward leg load. The native Texan fires through a quick and compact barrel with accuracy and all fields impact. Defensively, Sage appeared in the outfield where he has proven to have a strong throwing arm. Cooper Holland (‘29, CA) deposits a solo homer to straightaway right. Upright setup from the left side, utilizing HH + an even base. Peyton Alvarez (2029, New Braunfels, Texas) put on a display for Marucci Elite TX Ramirez. Went 4-8 with two doubles. Worked strong at bats, drawing a total of six walks. Lot of deep counts, putting stress on opposing arms. Also swiped a staggering seven bases over the span of five games. Repeatable right-handed stroke with hands that work quickly through the zone. Was an absolute force at the top of the order all weekend. Jack Simms (2028, Cypress, Texas) put together a strong showing for Texas Brigade 2028 - Konarik. Went 3-9 with a double, a home run, and five runs batted in. Showed some quick hands, working through an uphill plane, playing well to the pullside. Frame has plenty more in the tank, impact should continue to develop as he fills out.
