Preseason HS Rankings: 40-31

Preseason HS Rankings: 50-41

40. St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.)
2022 Record:
34-10
Head Coach: Andy Porta

Notable Prospect(s): LHP Ty Starke (Louisville), SS Cooper Smith (Troy), RHP Jake Gregor (Louisville)

St Xavier won their 9th state title in 2022 and did it in dominant fashion, making an impressive run through the state tournament. They’re no stranger to success and their mix of talent and pure ability to win games when it matters has been impressive. Seniors Ty Starke and Cooper Smith are two players that have contributed in a big way to this program in their time and look to once again shoulder a big load when it comes to their production in their respective areas while one of the most talented junior arms in the country, Jake Gregor, gives them a huge one-two punch at the top of the rotation that could get them to double digit state titles this year.

39. Ranney (Tinton Falls, N.J.)
2022 Record:
26-5
Head Coach:
Pat Geroni

Notable Prospect(s): OF AJ Gracia (Duke), 3B Diego Tavarez (Wagner), LHP Marcello Mastroianni (Georgetown), RHP Nick Coniglio (Northeastern), RHP Jack Renaud (Queens University of Charlotte), SS Brett Wehringer (Georgetown)

Ranney enters the 2023 season as the defending state champions for the first time in school history as the 2022 season was a remarkable one for them and they look to make it two in a row this year. This group will be led by a very talented senior group that has tons of experience. Leading that group will be Duke signee AJ Gracia, one of the top outfielders in the region and entire country, while the left side of the infield is likely comprised of Wagner signee Diego Tavarez and Georgetown signee Brett Wehringer. The veteran leadership in the pitching staff really catches your attention as they have two right-handers, Nick Coniglio and Jack Renaud, and a left-hander, Marcello Mastroianni, with tons of innings under their belt up to this point.

38. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas)
2022 Record:
34-8
Head Coach: Larry Vucan

Notable Prospect(s): SS Ethan Mendoza (Arizona State), 3B Ben Tryon (Dallas Baptist), OF Colin Robinson (Duke), RHP Jared White, RHP Tyler White (Texas A&M), RHP Caden Orr (Weatherford College), C Cody Cashon (Houston), OF Anthony Llera

Southlake Carroll has just been so impressive as a program in the state of Texas and in winning yet another state title in 2022, they’ve now won 3 of the last 4. While they lose a TON from that team a year ago, especially in their starting group, a really strong group of seniors step in to fill those roles. Mendoza, Tryon and Robson are three really talented player that can headline the lineup while there’s plenty of experience in the arms they have as the bulk of their innings will come from the seniors on staff, all of which can miss some bats a good bit in their own regard.

37. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.)
2022 Record:
25-9-1
Head Coach: Tom Dill

Notable Prospect(s): OF Dean West (UCLA), RHP Justin Lee (UCLA), OF Ryan Limerick, RHP Joseph Norris, RHP Oliver Boone (California), OF Jake Stromsborg, SS Madden Ocko (Fordham), SS Levi Sterling (Texas), RHP Sammy Petrocelli (Stanford), 3B Nate Kugler, OF Henry Leipart

There’s rich history here with the kind of players that have come through Notre Dame, and they have some of the more lauded talent in California once again in 2023. Dean West is a dynamic athlete who will really make this offense go alongside a deep group of experienced bats, but they’ve got real upside on the mound. PG All-American Justin Lee can reach the mid-90s and is one of the top arms in the state while Norris and Boone are good as well. Junior (’24) two-way prospect Levi Sterling is an up-and-coming star and he should factor into major innings for this group as well, especially so down the stretch.

36. Blessed Trinity Catholic (Roswell, Ga.)
2022 Record:
22-11
Head Coach: Jamie Wagner

Notable Prospect(s): RHP Jake Lankie (Georgia), RHP Porter Buursema (Georgia Southern), RHP Evan O’Neill (Indiana), SS Michael Zito, 3B Kade Kisz (Georgia Tech), OF Wesley Bass (Georgia Tech), SS Joseph Contreras

Blessed Trinity has become accustomed to challenging for the state title every season and their 2023 group looks to be no different. A season after getting beat out in the second round, they return good talent and experience. Justice Haynes enrolled early at Alabama, but the pitching staff looks as deep as any in the state. Seniors Jake Lankie, Porter Buursema and Evan O’Neill are going to be a driving force behind this year’s success as they are set to lead the club on the mound. Offensively, they will rely on some younger guys in sophomores Kade Kisz and Wesley Bass as well as junior Michael Zito with plenty of spots for guys to step up and make an impact.

35. Aquinas (San Bernardino, Calif.)
2022 Record:
28-3
Head Coach: Mike Carpentier

Notable Prospect(s): SS Eric Bitonti (Oregon), OF Owen Egan (UCLA), OF Seth Rajacich (BYU), RHP Bradley Gilbert (Long Beach State), SS Landon Young (TCU), OF Mason Greenhouse (Miami)

Aquinas capped off an impressive season last year by winning their league and posting a 28-3 record. Most of the production from last year is returning and they look to be loaded on the offensive side. PG All-American Eric Bitonti is set to lead the offense as one of the most talented seniors in the country. The outfield is comprised of two talented upperclassmen in Owen Egan and Seth Rajacich, and sophomore Mason Greenhouse could contribute some thump to the lineup. On the mound they’ll have a good combined effort with Bradley Gilbert, a junior that has been up to 90, seeing plenty of innings along with the dynamic two-way talent Owen Egan.

44. Liberty North (Liberty, Mo.)
2022 Record:
33-9
Head Coach: Ryan Stegall

Notable Prospect(s): RHP Tate McGuire (Arkansas), 2B Ty Wisdom (Kansas), RHP Jackson Downing (Arkansas State), C Cooper Philbrick, SS Trey Snyder (Tennessee), C Bo Jonas (Oklahoma)

Liberty North has lost a combined 15 games over the past two seasons, and they look to be as talented as ever this upcoming year. The offense boasts one of the top juniors in the country in Trey Snyder and he’ll be surrounded by P5 commits Ty Wisdom and Bo Jonas as well as senior catcher Cooper Philbrick. The early part of this lineup looks as deadly on paper as any you’ll find in the Midwest. The arms don’t get much easier as they have Arkansas commit Tate McGuire and Arkansas State commit Jackson Downing; McGuire is the top ranked right-hander in all of Missouri and has been up to 94.

33. North Broward Prep (Coconut Creek, Fla.)
2022 Record:
23-9
Head Coach: Brian Campbell

Notable Prospect(s): OF Nathanael Coupet (Georgia Tech), RHP Jensen Seculer, LHP Ben Daniels, SS Mauricio Bejarano, RHP Ryan McPherson (Mississippi State), 3B Gian De Castro, SS Mateo Gray (UCF), OF Riley Luft (App State), 3B Nikolas Koorse, C TJ Gramesty (FAU), OF Clark Corlew, C Braeden Seculer

North Broward Prep is coming off back-to-back state titles in Florida and although it’s not a very old roster, they’ve got the depth and kind of players to make a serious run at a three peat. It’s a senior group led by Coupet, a physical bat with a good arm too, while the bulk of their talent is in the junior class with guys like low-90s right-hander Ryan McPherson, power bat Gian De Castro and talented two-way impact guys Mateo Gray and Riley Luft. This is a group that knows how to win and is a resilient one that can never be counted out in a game, even if down early.

32. Lake Creek (Montgomery, Texas)
2022 Record:
23-6
Head Coach: Jeremy Schramm

Notable Prospect(s): RHP Weston Moss (Texas A&M), 1B Ethan Uribe, 2B Blake Brown (Sam Houston State), 3B Luke Ekdall (Blinn), LHP Jackson Wilkerson (Baylor), RHP Jack Haag, SS Samson Pugh (Texas State), OF Sam Lee (Arkansas), OF Diego Huerta (Abilene Christian), OF Davis Lee, RHP Ayden Leitz

After losing to powerhouse Friendswood in the playoffs a year ago, this team comes into 2023 with big aspirations and very much looking like the team that could win the Texas 5A state title. They’ve got a really deep group of guys committed to playing at the next level, led by power-armed Weston Moss and talented left-hander Jackson Wilkerson on the mound. They’ve got some others that’ll contribute big innings, but the bats are where they’re really well-rounded. They’ve got a number of seniors who have hit well on the tournament circuit that fill out the lineup with a good underclass piece in Sam Lee that brings more to an already athletic lineup.

31. Catholic (Baton Rouge, La.)
2022 Record:
31-7
Head Coach: Brad Bass

Notable Prospect(s): C Clayton Pourciau (Louisiana-Lafayette), RHP Cole Cranford (Tulane), RHP Alex Ainsworth (Tulane), LHP Harrison Waghalter (Southeastern Louisiana), RHP William Schmidt (Mississippi State), RHP Grant Breaux (LSU), 3B Trip Dobson (Houston), OF Brooks Wright (Houston), SS Jack Ruckert (LSU), OF Noah Lewis

This is a team that won a state title in 2022 and brings back a ton of their big contributing parts here in 2023. They’ve got really big aspirations and it’s one of the better rosters when you look at the overall depth across their classes; they’ve got a bunch of senior arms who threw last year like Cranford, Ainsworth and Waghalter with the latter two being their third and first in terms of innings thrown, while junior William Schmidt was one of the biggest risers in the country this fall giving them a huge piece to go to this spring. Their lineup should be balanced with some of their key pieces having experience in the lineup, but they will have to replace some big hitters.

Since I first saw him as a sophomore, Gomez-Gudiño has long been one of my favorite prospects in the state. The backstop features a super physical frame at 6-foot-0, 215-pounds with a thick lower half and strong forearms. Defensively, Gomez-Gudiño has always stood out. He moves well for his size behind the plate and receives with confident hands. The catch-and-throw ability stands out. Gomez-Gudiño looks to be aggressive and will back pick runners often. The glove alone makes...

Coppy's Corner: April 16 POY Deep Dive

Perfect Game Staff

Each week I huddle with Vinnie Cervino and Craig Cozart  to discuss Top-25 rankings and Players of the Week. In Coppy’s Corner, I dive deeper into these Players of the Week, providing analysis from 20+ years working in baseball front offices at the highest level.   Player of the Week: Jaquae Stewart – Texas State University  If you squint a little bit, you can see some Josh Naylor or Dominic Smith in Jaquae Stewart, with a stout build like a more powerful version of the teacup from the children’s song. Lately, the Sun Belt Conference has been child’s play for Stewart as he has been on fire showing an improved hit approach and power that tracks more with his 2024 performance at Northwest Florida State College than with his 2025 experience at the University of Texas. It’s tough for any player to jump from a JUCO in Florida to the big stage...

Another week of undefeated weeks for our top 4 ranked teams. Joining them in the top 5, coming off an undefeated week of their own, is Florence-Darlington, a team we have consistently had as a top 10 team all season long. Cloud County and Midland College continue to put together strong weeks and climb the rankings each week it seems. Jumping into the rankings this week on the strength of a 15-game winning streak is Seminole State (OK). And Linn Benton makes the top 25 for a 2nd consecutive week and looks like the top team in the NWAC this spring. Plenty of high-level matchups at the JUCO level for some of the top teams in the county this next week.  Rk. DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 15

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
Welcome to this week's small school baseball rankings, covering NCAA Division II, the NAIA, and NCAA Division III. As the calendar turns toward the final weeks of the regular season, the urgency is real across all three levels — teams are running out of weekends to build their cases, and the extended postseason invitations that every program is chasing don't go to programs that peak in March. The next few weeks of results will carry more weight than anything that happened before spring break, and the postseason committees in all three divisions are watching closely. Every series dropped to a team you should beat, every road sweep you let get away — it all matters now in a way it simply didn't two months ago. What you'll also notice as you read through the breakdowns below is that the numbers are doing more of the heavy lifting in how these rankings are constructed. Run...

College Players of the Week: April 14

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
April 14th Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Jaquae Stewart, INF/OF, Texas State  The Texas State Bobcats (24-12) are sitting in second place in the ultra-competitive Sun Belt Conference, and they have one of the most explosive offenses in the country.  They average right at 8-runs per game and can slug with the best of them, averaging almost 2-home runs per game as well.  Sitting in the middle of the order, Jaquae Stewart, is putting together a career year and is becoming the focus of opposing teams.  The 5-10/234 junior from Sinton, Tx is your classic lefthanded power hitter and is thriving in his move from Austin to San Marcos.  While it wasn’t the best week for his club, Stewart was sensational, collecting 8 hits in his 19 at-bats, scoring 5 runs, launching 5 home runs and driving in an insane 17 runs.  For the season, he is now slashing...

College Top 25: April 13

Vincent Cervino

In a season where remaining in the Top 25 has become a war of attrition, the No. 1 UCLA Bruins (33-2) are making the game look much easier than it is in all reality.  Winners of 27-games in a row, this club continues to win games by any means necessary as they continue their historic run.  Beyond the incredible win streak, the Bruins have started off Big Ten play (18-0) by sweeping their first six conference weekend.  Adding to their resume, in Game 1 of their series at Rutgers, they won a 14-inning thriller by a score of 4-1where their pitching staff registered an eye-popping 30-strikeouts while only surrendering 1 walk and 4 hits throughout.  In most any other season, the No. 2 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (30-5) would be sitting atop the poll as they are putting together a historic season of their own.  They swept Florida State (24-11) who was previously ranked...

PG Draft: Favorite Position Group

Tyler Henninger
Article Image
Every draft class has its strengths. Some years its a loaded group of prep infielders, some years its a deep collection of college arms. In this year’s class, certain position groups stand out above the rest to us. This week, the draft team dives into their favorite position groups. Groups that we believe are loaded with depth, upside, and big league potential. College Infielders It’s hard not to get excited about the crop of college infielders in this year’s class because of who is at the top. Roch Cholowsky alone makes the group exciting. He’s got gold glove potential at the next level and an offensive profile that should make him one of the Top 15 to 20 prospects in all of baseball the second he gets drafted. Justin Lebron is another player with as much upside in the class. He is a premium athlete that can really pick it at short and has big upside with the...
