Recruiting Notebook: December 15

Ethan Trivison, LHP, Class of 2026
National Rank: 341 | Commitment: Clemson

The new staff at Clemson took over and immediately went to work, grabbing talent from all over the country and they’ve continued with a couple of young pickups as of late, including Lucas Cannady who’s mentioned below alongside Trivison. At 6-foot-3, 160 pounds Trivison immediately catches your eye as he heads out to the mound and upon toeing the rubber he retains your attention given his operation and ability to pound the strike zone. With moving parts and a lower slot in his delivery, there’s nothing comfortable about facing the newly minted Clemson Tiger given the life on his pitches and the fact he’s already been up to 84 mph before entering high school. His breaking ball features plenty of depth with big shape through the zone and his ability to land the pitch for strikes helped lead to 80 strikeouts in just 56 1/3 innings pitched.

Cullen Weller, SS/RHP, Class of 2027
National Rank: 63 | Commitment: Tulane

We don’t always see Tulane grab talent as early in the process as they’ve done with Weller, speaking to what the staff thinks about his abilities on the diamond and their need to commit him when they did. As talented as he is versatile, Weller played all over the field this past summer circuit and made a name for himself with an overall polish to his game wherever he was playing. In the dirt Weller shows off softness in his hands alongside a bounce to his step and quickness in his footwork, all of which allow the young Tulane commit to make plays ranging to either side while showing solid arm strength across the diamond (also up to 83 mph on the mound). His swing is a simple one in the box, remaining balanced through his base while showing a shorter, linear path to the point of contact to spray the ball foul line to foul line. Weller is the first commit for Tulane and for the Wave to land a top-100 prospect this early is huge and they’ll continue to build off that momentum moving forward.

Casan Evans, SS/RHP, Class of 2024
National Rank: 55 | Commitment: LSU

It’s really no surprise at this point that LSU is hauling in much of the top talent in the country and Evans is another on that list which makes seven prospects ranked inside the Top 100 of the 2024 class committed to there. Evans is listed as a two-way prospect as his athleticism really shows on both sides of the ball with quality tools up the middle and a good swing, but where he blasted onto the scene this year is on the mound. He was up to 95 this spring, pitching regularly in the low-90s and holding velocity throughout outings, while the slider became a legitimate swing-and-miss pitch. It’s high-end athleticism on the mound with one of the faster arms in the class and he really pitched well all summer too, still showing low-90s with feel for three pitches and tons of strikes. It’s an impactful addition with stuff that plays big right now.

Logan D'Amico, OF/RHP, Class of 2026
National Rank: 248 | Commitment: Wake Forest

The Wake Forest staff has begun to put together an immensely impressive group in this 2026 class and D’Amico makes another well-rounded addition to that bunch. He’s a solid athlete with some versatility on the defensive end, and mid-80s arm strength from the outfield, while there’s real things to like on the mound with similar mid-80s velocity on the fastball and big-time spin numbers on the breaking ball in the 25-2600 RPM range. Offensively, it’s a good young foundation with bat speed, intent and overall handle of the barrel that produces well right now and he’s swung it well in some of the better events that the national circuit has to offer, like four doubles at the UBC back in June.

-Tyler Russo

Lucas Cannady, 3B, Class of 2026
National Rank: 112 Commitment: Clemson

The Tigers continue to add top-end 2026 talent from Florida, and Cannady is the latest product. He’s a big time athlete with well-rounded tools and considerable upside in the stick. Real fast hands, whips the barrel out front with present strength at contact that projects. The arm strength shows in looks with carry across the bag along with 6.75 speed that stretches for extra bags with great burst. Cannady’s combo of strength and athleticism bodes well for the overall profile long term along with a consistent track record of performance to this point. Clemson has hit the recruiting trail hard for its 2026 class, and Cannady fits the mold of a legit impact player at the next level.

Reno Spagnoli, RHP, Class of 2024
PG Rank: 472 | Commitment: Seton Hall

Spagnoli becomes the highest ranked commit thus far to make his pact to Coach Sheppard and the Pirates, as the athletic right-hander checks in at #472 in our latest Class of 2024 Rankings. He has recently peaked at 90 mph with his fastball and steadily works in the upper-80s with tons of present arm speed. He pairs it well with a potentially plus breaking ball that has abrupt two-plane action to it and generates a ton of empty swings. The South Orange, NJ native completes his mix with slightly faded change and can rack up strikeouts with his entire three-pitch mix. Minor refinements mechanically will allow him to pound the strike zone regularly with his electric array of pitches. Look for him to continue adding velocity as his frame should assuredly add strength over the next few seasons, ultimately leading to Spagnoli working consistently in the low-90s.

Gian Gamelli, LHP/OF, Class of 2025
PG Rank: T1000 | Commitment: Notre Dame

Gamelli becomes the fifth commit in the 2025 class for new head coach Shawn Stiffler and the Fighting Irish. He joins Jaime Zee and Dylan Passo from New Jersey as fellow Northeasters, as the coaching staff continues to scour the region for projectable talent that will help continue their recent success. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound LHP/OF offers immense physical projection and plenty of things to like on both sides of the baseball. At the plate, it’s a loose swing with plenty of leverage to drive the baseball with authority from gap-to-gap and the power projection remains vast as he should add tons of strength over the next few years. Defensively, he has the ability to navigate the outfield with long strides and good routes to the baseball. He can also pick it over at first base. On the mound, you could certainly see a huge velocity spike in the near future as he physically matures and adds strength. It is an intriguing two-way profile with upside in all aspects of his game and it should be fun to watch him develop over the next couple of years.

Cape Cod Notebook No. 1

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Cape Cod League Scouting Notebook  Maverick Rizy | Ole Miss | RHP | Brewster Whitecaps  The towering 6-foot-9, 250-pound right-hander continues to stand out with one of the more unique looks on the Cape, pairing a massive frame with a low three-quarter slot that creates difficult angles for hitters. While his fastball velocity was down from its typical mid-90s range during this look, working mostly 90-92 mph, it still generated plenty of swing-and-miss. He paired the heater with an 81-83 mph gyro slider featuring tight bullet-spin action and mixed in an 85-mph changeup with quality separation. Rizy battled his command early in the outing I saw, before settling in to strike out five over three innings, showing the ability to adjust as the game progressed. Through 12.2 Cape League innings, he has recorded 18 strikeouts, and his combination of size, deception, and projectability...

Merren stands in at 6-foot-0 from a pretty physical frame at this age. He has the athleticism to go with it and already looks like he has filled out a good bit. Merren fits the mold as a true power hitting corner guy but can play all over on the dirt. He finished the week going 9-15 that included two doubles, a triple, and two homers. He also drove in seven runs and scored nine times. Talk about a complete week and Tripp was simply in the heart of...

He generates lots of easy strength at the point of contact and consistently produces high exit velocities to the pull-side and middle of the field.
