Uncommitted Gems: PNW & Hawaii

Benjamin Christensen, RHP, Portland Ore.
Class of 2023 | PG Rank: High Follow

Christensen is an uncommitted arm to follow with feel for a three-pitch mix and future projection in store. The right-hander is up to high-80s and sits 83-84 mph with good life while also flashing a titling high-70s slider and fading low-80s changeup. He shows solid command of all three and has the ability to mix tempos well. Christensen is a solid arm with a foundation to build upon.

Jayden Holloway, OF, Seattle, Wash.
Class of 2023 | PG Rank: 500

Holloway is a known product in the region with well-rounded tools across the board. The athleticism really oozes as he covers plenty of ground in the outfield combined with a short, direct cut at the plate. There’s good strength at contact that should only develop combined with top-end speed to stretch for extra bags. Holloway has the makings of a nice player at the next level and shouldn’t be on the uncommitted scene for long.

Paxton Fenberg, SS/RHP, Kirkland, Wash.
Class of 2023 | PG Rank: 500

Fenberg is a solid two-way product with lots to like in the overall profile. He shows well up the middle with sound transfers and a solid arm across from multiple angles. He can also hop on the bmp and put the arm talent on display, working into the high-80s with plenty of tempo from a whippier three-quarter slot. Fenberg also has solid feel for the barrel, creating good extension out front and working it to all fields.

Dylan Strom, RHP/OF, Ferndale, Wash.
Class of 2023 | PG Rank: Top 1000

Strom has athletic traits on the hill and continues to make strides each year. It’s feel for a three-pitch mix working into 88-89 mph with a solid breaker and late changeup to his arsenal. He works down the slope well from an over-the-top release. Strom can also swing it a bit at the plate with some pull-side strength and intent. The components are present for Strom to continue making jumps.

Taylin Oana, RHP/SS, Honolulu, Hawaii
Class of 2023 | PG Rank: 500

Oana was a big riser from the Pacific Islands this summer as his length and two-way potential really stand out. As an arm, Oana comes equipped with some big upside. The fastball was up to low-90s, sitting more 85-87 with lots of running life up in the zone. He pairs it with a short 11-5 curveball from the same slot that can develop into a quality out pitch. Oana uses his length to his advantage up the middle with sound actions handling shortstop in looks. He’s a well above-average mover at that size and flashed serious feel. At the plate, Oana has a loose stroke with quick hands. The athleticism and upside in the frame is an awfully enticing profile to keep an eye on.

Christopher Mata, MIF/RHP, Wailuku, Hawaii
Class of 2023 | PG Rank: 500

Mata is another loud two-way performer who opened plenty of eyes on the circuit. He’s young for the class with some eye-opening stuff on the hill. The fastball was up to 92 mph this spring, living mid/high-80s from a really quick arm, breaking off a slurvy breaking ball and low-80s changeup in the process. The arm talent stands out along with his performance at the plate. The hands work quick and match plane well, turning it over with plenty of intent. He’s also a capable defender on the dirt with a good amount of arm across. Mata has been a big performer this spring and is an uncommitted name to watch closely.

Matthew Kosderka, RHP, Boring, Ore.
Class of 2024 | PG Rank: 500

Kosderka is a late riser after a solid showing on the bump with some upside to build upon. It’s a three-pitch mix with good feel to spin. His fastball has late life up in the zone as a high-80s offering. He breaks off a solid 12-6 breaking ball and changeup that mimics armspeed with some deceptive fade. The pieces are there for Kosderka to continue rising and make an immediate impact for a program.

Drew Rayment, RHP/OF, Spokane, Wash.
Class of 2024 | PG Rank: 319

Rayment’s two-way potential stands out in the class and projects for more. The arm talent showed up towards the later end of the summer. His fastball is an 85-86 mph offering up to 88-89 mph with downhill plane from an athletic drop-and-dive delivery. The breaking ball continues to develop its shape, but shows traits of a high spin offering that can develop into a quality out pitch. A 6.51 runner, Rayment’s athleticism shows on both sides with a sound left-handed swing with quickness and impact in the hands. There’s a good amount of upside left in the profile with more in the tank.

Bryan Ho, C/OF, Mill Creek, Wash.
Class of 2024 | PG Rank: Top 1000

Ho is an athletic product with good traits to build upon at the next level. He’s a 6.80 runner with catch-and-throw ability behind the dish, showing a clean transfer and good carry to the bag. The athleticism shows in the outfield as well, where he’s a comfortable mover charging or ranging to either side. At the plate, he brings a loose path with fluid wrists from a long, whippy barrel. Ho has the athletic traits to build upon as he fills out his frame.

Elliot Oster, OF, Seattle Wash.
Class of 2024 | PG Rank: 500

Oster is another PNW name to watch closely with his blend of athleticism and projection. He hits off a well stiff front side with bat speed and power that plays to the pull or middle of the filed in game. 6.7 runner with tools. He’s got good feel in the box with easy actions and present arm strength with carry roaming the outfield. Oster has the makings of a loud profile if it all comes together.

Easton O'Neal, C/OF, Spokane, Wash.
Class of 2024 | PG Rank: 500

Equipped with a powerful lefty stick and a strong arm behind the dish, O’Neal is an enticing product with lots to like as he continues to develop. He creates leverage out front with good handle of the barrel and significant power upside that shows in game. Defensively, O’Neal has strong on-line throws with mobile hips and softer hands. O’Neal has the makings to be another impact profile.

Sean Yamaguchi, INF, Aiea, Hawaii
Class of 2024 | PG Rank: 500

Yamaguchi is an impact player with big strength to his overall game. It’s a strong hit/power showing in multiple looks with big hand speed and impact to the pull side. He gets deep and unloads with plenty of intent out front. Yamaguchi has some athletic traits in the frame and stretches for extra bags consistently. He’s a solid corner type with big upside in the stick along with a solid track record of performance.

Chandler Murray, 1B/3B, Honolulu, Hawaii
Class of 2024 | PG Rank: 355

Murray is a physical bat who opened plenty of eyes this summer. He produces consistent loud contact and really gets into it with strength to all fields. He lets the barrel work and the physicality shines at the plate. Murray’s 6-foot-4 frame does plenty of damage and the bat can make a big impact in the middle of an order at the next level.

Kory Chu, INF/RHP, Kaneohe, Hawaii
Class of 2024 | PG Rank: 500

Another Hawaiian talent with a long track record of performance is Chu. He shows the ability to work the barrel out front with some loud strength in the profile. The bat shows in looks with some defensive versatility on the dirt. He can also hop on the bump and mix in a high-80s fastball and short breaker. The arm strength and feel at the plate makes him one of the top uncommitted names on the Islands.

Carmelo Fuller, MIF, Kapolei, Hawaii
Class of 2024 | PG Rank: 500

Fuller has the athleticism and range to stick up the middle on the dirt with good rhythm in the box. He’s a sound mover with great instincts and feel for the leather. He gets on plane efficiently with a smooth finish in the path, and there’s a bit of budding strength and contact to the pull side when squared. Fuller has the makings of a quality product.

Will Cahill, OF/RHP, Seattle Wash.
Class of 2025 | PG Rank: 330

Cahill’s two-way ability has stood out over several events and he’s one of the top uncommitted names in the state. He shows a potent two-pitch fastball and curveball mix from a loose, long arm action with plenty of projection in store. The bat is also an asset from the left side with great feel and backside drive, showing great loft to pull. His dynamic ability and real two-way talent shouldn’t keep him on the uncommitted scene for long.

Adam Jay, LHP, Maple Valley, Wash.
Class of 2025 | PG Rank: Top 1000

Jay is a crafty, repeatable lefty with some good feel to spin. He runs the fastball up to low/mid-80s with good arm-side run and two distinct breaking balls in a curveball and slider. He mixes tempos well from a tougher mid three-quarter release with late pick up out of the hand. Jay has the foundation to be a solid arm going forward.

Tanner Fujino, MIF, Honolulu, Hawaii
Class of 2025 | PG Rank: 250

Following another impressive summer on the circuit, Fujino is a name to circle in the 2025 class. The bat can be a big carrying tool with some leverage out front and plenty of intent and quickness form a short path of contact. The power shows in game at points with hard sprays to the pull-side gap. Fujino is a solid athlete up the middle with crisp transfers and instincts on display. He’s a sound product to keep an eye on.

Chase Sutherland, C/INF, Kailua, Hawaii
Class of 2025 | PG Rank: 500

Sutherland produces plenty of barred contact with some catch-and-throw skills behind the dish. His acumen at the plate brings a lot to like with good bat speed and strong hands in a short window. Sutherland is beginning to tap into his frame and has shown the ability to get on plane and work the barrel out front. He has traits behind the dish to stick defensively with great receiving skills and quick pop times. There’s a lot to like going forward.

16u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1

Nolan Ash (2028, Ashland, Mo.) showed off the power upside for Natty State 2028. The right-handed hitter starts from a spread stance with in-line feet and a high handset with a high back elbow, utilizes a leg lift stride. Creates separation and uses a direct hand path with a slightly uphill bat plane and some feel to generate lift from the lower half. Quick hands and stays in-sync with a rotational lower half and solid bat speed. Showed the power belting a solo bomb over the left field fence. Long and lean 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame with wiry strength present and more room to fill. The shortstop has a high ceiling and feel for the barrel. Colton Dodds (2028, Columbia, Mo.) showed off the barrel feel and power upside for Natty State 2028. Coppy's Corner: July 7 Summer Edition

John Coppolella
Article Image
It’s an exciting time for College Baseball. Not only do potential and proposed changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) elevate the game, but we are coming off a thrilling College World Series and less than a week away from Major League Baseball’s 2026 Amateur Draft. In the middle of it all is the Cape Cod Baseball League.  The amateur players on the Cape are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th  through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and...

13u World Series Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Swings it from the left side of the plate and the barrel accuracy has really stuck out thus far. 3-4 through the first couple days with a double and two triples, Bellush has also walked twice and collected 3 RBI along the way. Yesterday against USA Prime with the bases loaded,...

Oliver Lindstrom (2028, Green Bay, WI) created some of the loudest offensive moments of the weekend while producing across the board, finishing with six hits, eight RBI, and a home run. The right-handed hitter showed the ability to stay through the baseball and drive it with authority. Creates quality leverage through the lower half while arriving in strong hitting positions early, allowing the barrel to work with intent through the zone. The blend of power, athleticism, and all-fields impact stood out throughout the event.  Dominic Haigh (2028, South Bend, IN) was one of the most productive hitters at the event, collecting 10 hits while consistently creating pressure on opposing defenses. Made life difficult on pitchers with a relentless approach, routinely extending at-bats and forcing them to work deep into counts. The operation remains simple and efficient, featuring an early...

West Region Rankings Risers: Class of 2028

Joey Cohen
Article Image
After a heavy stretch of early summer looks, our scouting staff felt confident rolling out an updated ‘28 national ranking a couple weeks ago. The evaluation window was packed whether it was with our Memorial Day and Summer Kickoff tournaments, UBC action, Sunshine Showcases, and of course the Junior National Showcase which all provided a deep and diverse look at the class against strong competition. Between fresh game evaluations and updated showcase data, we were able to get a clearer picture of where players stand and more importantly how they’ve progressed. Improvements in strength, athleticism, and overall skill were evident across the board giving our staff real conviction when it came time to shuffle the board. With that in mind, I wanted to highlight a handful of west region prospects who made a strong impression on me this summer and earned a well-deserved jump in...

The right-handed pitcher went four innings and collected three strikeouts while spreading two hits and two walks for one run. The fastball topped out at 80 and was consistently in the upper- 70s.
