West Region Rankings Risers: Class of 2028

After a heavy stretch of early summer looks, our scouting staff felt confident rolling out an updated ‘28 national ranking a couple weeks ago. The evaluation window was packed whether it was with our Memorial Day and Summer Kickoff tournaments, UBC action, Sunshine Showcases, and of course the Junior National Showcase which all provided a deep and diverse look at the class against strong competition. Between fresh game evaluations and updated showcase data, we were able to get a clearer picture of where players stand and more importantly how they’ve progressed. Improvements in strength, athleticism, and overall skill were evident across the board giving our staff real conviction when it came time to shuffle the board. With that in mind, I wanted to highlight a handful of west region prospects who made a strong impression on me this summer and earned a well-deserved jump in our latest update.

Tyce Johnson (SS, Temecula, Calif.)
Previous Ranking: 172
New Ranking: 9



Strong showings at the Junior National and UBC helped propel Johnson to the No. 2 spot in California and No. 9 nationally. It’s an ultra-attractive left-handed hitting shortstop profile, with athleticism that consistently shows up on the dirt. The actions are crisp and polished, both in his footwork and glove work, and he pairs it with plenty of arm strength across the diamond. At the plate, there’s real offensive skill. It’s a balanced and compact stroke that allows him to spray line drives to all fields, while also showing comfort getting the barrel out front and driving the ball with authority to the pull side. The bat-to-ball skills also stand out, backed by a low overall whiff rate thus far on the circuit. The recent performance only reinforces the profile. Johnson hit .333 across both the 16U and 17U UBC West, coming off a high school spring where he posted a .375 avg. with five home runs. Even with rankings finalized prior to the 17U WWBA, he continued to elevate his stock, hitting .429 at that premier national event.

Colton Fitzgibbon (OF, Danville, Calif.)

New Ranking: 75

Fitzgibbon has been a personal favorite for a while now and he just continues to trend upward toward his ultimate ceiling. While the production hasn’t fully exploded yet, the traits are very difficult to ignore. The left-handed swing is highly twitchy with advanced hand speed, working the barrel on a short-to-long path that shows adjustability and gets to quality angles at contact. He also profiles as a double-plus athlete, with easy plus speed that translates both to the basepaths and out in centerfield, where he covers ground at an extremely high level. There’s real arm strength here as well, rounding out a high-upside overall profile that can impact the game in so many different ways.

Nathan Godbold (SS, San Diego, Calif.)
Previous Ranking: 100
New Ranking: 89

Godbold was flagged by our San Diego regional scout as a name to follow this summer after a .345 spring with five home runs, and he carried that momentum into UBC East, hitting .308 with multiple extra-base hits, including a home run. It’s avg. size but it's supported by noticeable athleticism, and it’s real barrel skills from both sides of the plate. Offensively, he operates with a slightly pre-engaged backside and consistently slots the rear elbow well, allowing the barrel to stay connected while getting on-plane early where the swing then works with both quickness and length through the zone. If there’s continued physical and athletic development here I imagine he’ll keep trending upward.

Riley Salvemini (3B/RHP, Woodland, Calif.)

New Ranking: 90

Few arms were more impressive at UBC West than Salvemini, who turned in two dominant outings, starting Alpha’s opener and later closing things out with ease in playoff action. He has that type of lean, athletic, projectable frame you look for at 6-foot-3, 180 pounds. The delivery features a bit of a throwback look with an exaggerated high leg kick, yet he maintains body control and smooth tempo throughout which gives it a starter type look. The arm then works extremely fast to release, producing a fastball that we’ve seen up to 94 that he then complements with a low 80s breaker that flashes early plus traits with its present sharpness and late bite.

Jaxxon Tweedt (OF, Chico, Calif.)

New Ranking: 76

Tweedt has definitely separated himself as one of the more elite bats in the class where it’s a polished offensive foundation with noticeable innate feel to hit. The recent performance backs that up where he had a standout HS spring (.488, 13BB, 4K) which continued into the summer with a 5-for-12 week at the UBC West where we walked away impressed. The LH swing is efficient, featuring a loose, quick and direct turn of the barrel on a path that stays on plane through contact. Everything works in rhythm allowing for consistent timing and consistent barreled contact. The power currently shows more in the alleys but the underlying traits suggest there’s more impact to come as he continues to add strength. He’s also a pretty explosive athlete as he pairs his offensive upside with real defensive value in center field. He moves with ease showing above-average run times and the ability to close ground efficiently. I’m bullish on him continuing to rise especially if the bat continues to show like it has. 

Ryan Sheffer (SS, Westlake Village, Calif.)
Previous Ranking: 224
New Ranking: 164

While his UBC West performance wasn’t loud, Sheffer continues to show underlying traits that stand out with each look. Improved athleticism was evident at Junior National with a 6.68 60-yard dash, pairing well with truly advanced defensive ability at shortstop. He shows all the signs of sticking at the position long term as a high-level defender. Offensively, he’s coming off a strong spring and has made good strides in the swing. He’s showing a cleaner and more consistent move into launch as the hands work with rhythmic looseness and create a flatter barrel path that produces consistent line drive contact that plays to all fields. 

Jeremiah Hall (SS, Spanish Fork, UT)
Previous Ranking: 37
New Ranking: 16

A loud Junior National followed by a strong UBC East pushed Hall firmly into this spot. Physically, he offers pretty much a dream build at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, combining strength and athleticism that was noticeable with his 6.56 60. That athleticism translates defensively, where he moves well on the dirt with solid actions. At the plate, the bat is beginning to show signs of a potential impact hit/power combination. The swing is simple and efficient, with easy strength and quick hands that keep the barrel flat through the zone while still being able to generate lift and impact to all parts of the field, as seen at Junior National with his loud 414ft HR. 

Chase Fillman (OF/LHP, Goodyear, AZ)
Previous Ranking: 89
New Ranking: 74

Fillman has put together a strong start to the summer, performing well with the bat across multiple events. The left-handed stroke is clean and natural, showing an ability to consistently get the barrel out front and drive the ball with authority to the pull side. More recently, he’s also shown improved ability to really impact all fields. The strength in the frame translates to well above-average bat speed presently that he generates with relative ease. On the mound, there’s still some rawness, particularly with the strikes, but the pure stuff plays at a high level when he’s around the zone, missing bats at an extremely high rate.

Christian Estrella (OF/RHP, Chandler, AZ)
Previous Ranking: 500
New Ranking: 227

Positive looks from both our west region staff and our more national staff led to a significant jump for Estrella. The bat has stood out, highlighted mainly by an 8-for-15 performance at West Memorial Day, along with a solid two-inning relief outing where he ran the fastball up to 90 mph. He brings a physically imposing 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame with considerable present strength. With that strength, he keeps things simple and controlled in the box, working with smooth rhythm in both the hands and lower half. The bat path is clean and efficient, allowing him to generate hard contact without any excessive effort. If the athleticism can continue to improve where he can show he can hold down an OF spot defensively then there’s easy reason to believe he’s not done climbing. 

Jackson Leigh (RHP, Cave Creek, AZ)
Previous Ranking: 500
New Ranking: 334

Leigh remains somewhat raw, particularly in terms of both pitchability and strike throwing, but the foundational traits are highly intriguing. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame, athleticism, and ease of operation in the delivery all stand out, helping produce present low-90s velocity. The slider flashes as a legitimate swing-and-miss pitch when executed with intent. There’s clear upper-90s velocity potential here, and with even modest gains in command and control, the profile could take a significant leap forward.

As the summer travel baseball season comes to an end, over 80 teams will meet in East Cobb, Georgia as they look to end the year with a victory and a trophy at the PG East World Series. The premier event will host 5 age groups of 14u-18u with pool play commencing the tournament on Friday, July 24th, with champions crowned on Monday, July 27th at East Cobb Baseball Complex. The 15u field will feature 26 teams from all over the southeast, including the No. 27 team in the nation from the 14u rankings, Home Plate Chili Dogs 14u Glozier. The Chili Dogs, who also played up in the 15u WWBA last week for increased exposure, have been a very solid team this summer, but are still in search of their first championship win of the season. Luke Costello | INF | South Carolina | Bourne Braves  Costello brings one of the cleaner offensive operations in the Cape, featuring a simple, direct swing that allows him to consistently get the barrel out front and do damage. He minimizes unnecessary movement, stays on time, and shows the strength to impact the baseball with authority. After a very productive spring hitting .302 with 17 home runs during his sophomore season at Wake Forest, Costello heads to South Carolina as an established middle-of-the-order bat. Gavin Johnson (2029, De Pere, Wisc.) handled the bat pretty well this weekend for his CBT Wolfpack 15u team that made a run into bracket play. Johnson is a left-handed hitting first baseman with a physical 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame, showing good physicality throughout the build. It’s a clean stroke from the left side, with feel to deliver the barrel on time and drive the ball working pull-side. He has a feel to rotate well, loading deep with the hands & turning well through contact to impact the baseball out in front. Another week of Perfect Game baseball concluded as champions were crowned in the 15U, 16U, and 18U divisions of the Southwest Select Championship. After several days of pool play and championship bracket action, three teams rose above the competition to capture tournament titles following a week of high-level baseball. Throughout the tournament, teams from across the Southwest and beyond competed in closely contested matchups, producing standout pitching performances, timely offense, and memorable defensive plays. Easton Vandyke (’27 RHP, RISE 2027/2028, VA) opened Day 4 by running his fastball up to 84 mph, showing consistent strike-throwing ability throughout the outing. The 6-foot-1, 160-pound right-hander paired the fastball with a low-70s curveball and a 75 mph changeup that he consistently kept at the bottom of the zone. Vandyke worked with a quick, whippy arm action, getting down the mound efficiently while filling up the strike zone with all three pitches. ’27 P Daniel McDevitt, the No. 91 shortstop in Florida and No. 531 overall in the state, has been dominant through four innings, working in the low-to-mid 80s with a quality two-pitch offspeed mix that shows consistent depth. Tyler Osmanski (2027, Frankfort, Ill.) a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed pitcher worked a 7 inning complete game shutout to start off Chicago Elite’s 6-0 weekend. On top of going the distance he allowed only three base runners and one hit. Osmanski has lots of athleticism in his delivery. He keeps his body under control while still being able to have good arm action and great hip to shoulder separation. He works from the third base side of the rubber with a high ¾ arm slot. His fastball was up to 84mph multiple times and sat 80-83mph. He used two offspeed pitches, a good 12-6 breaking ball 65-68mph, and a changeup in the low 70’s.     ‘27 RHP Brett Alkire (IL) punched out everyone across his 5.2 inning masterful outing.
