HS Regional Preview: Florida | Pacific |

The TexArklahoma Region, made up of the states of Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, has six teams ranked in the PG Preseason Top 50, led by No. 9 Southlake Carroll High School and No. 16 Lake Travis.  As far as individual players go, the region has three 2021 PG All-Americans in infielders Jayson Jones and Jackson Holliday and right-handed pitcher Chase Shores.  They also feature two top-10 players in the 2023 class in catcher Blake Mitchell and infielder/right-handed pitcher Travis Sykora.
So there is no lack of upper level talent in the traditionally-rich region.
But if the numbers above seem a little short for this region in the past few years, it’s pretty easy to explain.  The greater Houston area has basically gone through a severe talent drought in the last three years.  They have only had one PG All-American in that time, catcher Drew Romo.  The Houston area has only one team in the Preseason Top 50, Friendswood High School at No. 32, and only one player in the Class of 2022 Top-100 in right-handed pitcher Collin McKinney, a very late addition to the list.
Imagine Atlanta or Orlando or Orange County in the same situation?  It’s difficult to do.  But that’s what’s happening in the greater Houston area it seems right now.
